Welcome to Ballotpedia's Daily Brew, your nonpartisan and unbiased source for political news. It’s August 6, 2024.
Since 2020, over 100 bills related to Environmental, Social, and Governance investing (or ESG as it is known). If you are not familiar, ESG is an investment philosophy that says that investors should consider how a company aligns with a set of views on climate change, social justice, and diversity, in addition to expected financial returns. The legislation has been largely divided along partisan lines, with Republican-controlled states generally opposing ESG practices and Democratic-controlled states supporting them.
The debate over ESG investing reflects broader disagreements about the role of environmental and social factors in investment decisions. Proponents argue that ESG considerations are important for long-term financial sustainability, while critics contend that such practices may conflict with fiduciary duties to maximize returns.

There’s been a flurry of ballot measure certification activity over the summer. Today’s update focuses on Colorado where two ballot measures have recently submitted signatures for verification to qualify for the November 5, 2024 ballot.
Colorado Voters First submitted signatures for an initiative that would establish top-four primaries and ranked-choice voting for Congress, statewide offices, the University of Colorado Board of Regents, the state board of education, and the Legislature.
Advance Colorado Action submitted signatures to the secretary of state for another initiative that would create a new law enforcement fund. This initiative would direct the Legislature to appropriate $350 million to the newly created Peace Officer Training and Support Fund, meant to provide money for law enforcement training, retention, and hiring, as well as for training on the use of force.
Currently, Colorado has 10 statewide measures confirmed for the 2024 ballot, including three citizen initiatives and seven legislatively referred measures. Five additional initiatives are pending signature verification, and nine more have been approved for signature gathering with an August 5 deadline.
    And that’s a wrap!
