  • Ricardo Rosset. Wretched racer? Or tarnished talent?
An ever present in every ‘worst F1 driver’ top 10 list, with a host of mishaps and maladies cluttering his time in Formula One. Yet according to some, one of F1’s many promising talents, snuffed out thanks to bad timing, bad luck, and a multitude of issues, hidden from the general public until recently.
Today, we tackle the supposedly wretched racing of Ricardo Rosset, from his drubbing at Arrows, his struggles at Lola, and his meme-worthy antics at Tyrrell, just so we can answer the question… were things really as bad as they seemed?
Also I used the phrase 'bare statistics' and decided to include an animated clip of a bear, so that gives you a window into my creative process.
Today’s video is the most requested one in the history of the channel, so if you’re one of the wonderful 10,000 people who decided to click that little button marked ‘subscribe’ - thank you so much!

If you get pole and win your first race in F3000 and achieve second in the championship without having grown up racing, it means you have immense talent. Maybe not Alonso level talent, but more than most pro drivers. It sounds like he really needed a manager to structure his development.

Tbf, while McNish never excelled at F1, which was probably more of a car problem then a McNish Problem, he excelled at everything but F1. He is one of the best drivers of his generation. This controlled aggression. Being able to pass anywhere, while lapping. He was brilliant.

@@TheNecromancer6666A year in F1 is still a year in F1, and that's still a career. No matter how good the car is. Alonso only needed one season at Minardi to impress. Schumacher (the good one) only needed one race at Jordan.

@T-Forever OK, so imagine a driver, who starts last after a problem on the warmup. Has a car that's 2 seconds slower then the best. And fights through and wins, because he himself it just that fast, that aggressive and determined. Because that's Alan. The whole veto of Fontana has this dark conspiracy theory around it that I'm not sure people know about but here goes.
Remember the infamous 1997 finale at Jerez? The one where Fontana backed Jacques Villeneuve up? Well some people have crossed red thread on a whiteboard to point out how Tyrrell was sold to Craig Pollock, Jacques' manager at the time, and for the veto to kind of step over Ken himself... it's said this was a form of retribution for what happened in the championship decider.
There was also Fontana himself years ago coming out to say Ferrari had instructed Sauber to potentially help Michael if the chance presented itself,he claims doing so cost him that seat. But hey, that's just a theory...

    • @TheMobileChicane
      @TheMobileChicane  7 місяців тому +4

As theories go, it’s a pretty creditable one! I knew about the alleged Ferrari involvement in 1997, but the Pollock connection there makes total sense.

This channel is CRIMINALLY underrated, which is much much more than we can say about Rosset. Though his tale is just a number of many that success in other disciplines, junior or otherwise, does not guarantee success in F1.
Granted, put us and him in the same machinery and he'll wipe the floor with most if not all of us.
That being said his toxic behaviour will forever cement his bad reputation between motorsport fans and his ex-colleagues.

Some years ago I got CAR Magazine from Sep '98 with Rosset interview (yep, they really interviewed him). And to my surprise, Ricardo seemed way more level-headed than he was described in media. Moreover, he had some really valid points there.
Also, in appendix 'Formula None' about worst F1 drivers he was rated higher, than Inoue, Lavaggi and Deletraz. Now scans are uploaded at Flickr ('Ricardo Rosset Interview & Top 10 Formula One Losers').
And yes, thanks for another brilliant documentary!

You know, IMO Pedro Diniz became the driver Rosset wished he had become. Diniz also came from a wealthy background - his father is the supermarket magnate Abílio dos Santos Diniz and much like Rosset Phe started karting at a relatively late age. He wasn't particularly good in junior categories - namely British F3 and International F3000, but his father's backing landed him a spot at Forti in F3000 for 1993 and 94. And what a strange coinkydink that Guido Forti was looking to go to F1 itself, which happened in 1995. The GD01 (and later GD02) was uncompetitive (that car was the last one to use manual gearbox), but after a year due to his father's backing he was able to secure seats with the likes of Ligier, Arrows and Sauber. And when he had a chance to score points, he took it - in 6 seasons in total, he scored 10 points in total. Not too shabby, considering that it was the era where only the Top 6 have scored points and reliability was an issue back then - he would've scored way more under the current system (even while driving that Forti).

Rosset claimed he did not go back to the UK between Australia and Brazil in 97, when evidence shows he did a test for Lola at Silverstone between then. For a guy who apparently had a sense of superiority I would take what he says with a pinch of salt

I did find Rosset kind of interesting after watching other videos about him and learning that he wasn't as dreadful in his career before and after F1 and I did think that you doing a video on him was only natural.
After seeing this video, I do think that Rosset just wasn't good enough for F1 and the reasons that he gave for why he struggled do sound more like excuses for his poor performances. Not qualifying for so many races in 1998 also sealed the deal for me as well especially considering his toxic relationship with the Tyrrell team as well.
This video also reminded that somehow this Tyrrell team would eventually become Mercedes who have been one of the top teams in F1 for almost a decade now.
Congrats on a well earned 10k as these videos have always been super interesting to watch since learning about motorsport history has always fascinated me especially stories like this with the drivers and teams who end up at the back of the grid since learning their stories can be very eye opening with drivers like De Cesaris and Stefano Modena proving very interesting to learn about a long time ago.

Interesting to have some more perspective on Rosset’s time outside of F1. It seems like he had a bit of talent, but not the work ethic to make good on it.

Grats on the 10k! And the F1Rejects nod certainly takes me back.
His tale has always felt to me like the tale of someone who was just never well liked anywhere. Fully explains the lack of corroboration for his statements: he's as far from being a saint as he is from being a good driver, but knowing the toxic relationship that the British in particular had with F1 during that era whether they were directly involved in it or not, it wouldn't surprise me if there was a fundamental clash wherever he went.

Great video again. The only criticism I'll give is the horrendous Takagi pronunciation. Also despite Takagi being an all round average talent, he has one of the most dominant championship wins of all time in Formula Nippon 2000. An absolutely insane Verstappen-like campaign from him.
I also think Rosset's main problem is not karting at all when he was a kid as funny as it sounds. When you don't race at all as kid like most drivers do, you lose a lot of feel and just overall instinctual ability that is there in every driver's psyche.
46:50 You gotta also remember that some drivers will obviously try to make themselves look as good as possible, since it's literally their job, so some will throw a few excuses in there to make themselves look a little better or just to not get made fun of by the media. Leclerc is one of the only ones that openly admits to mistakes, also I remember an article about Leclerc calling out certain drivers that don't admit to them.

The problem is a mix of incredibly aggressive driving mixed with inexperience leads to heavy inconsistency and with the fucking terrible rides he had too it means his best moment were unseen by most and his worst moments were as flamboyant and attention grabbing as Gilles's best. Tho I don't have much sympathy after all it was his choice to go up to F1 as soon as he did and take any ride he could get even they were the shitbox among shitboxes.
If he did couple more years in Formula 3000 or in European endurance racing, gone to a reserve role somewhere to know some F1 tracks he hadn't raced on better. He would've been experienced enough to show his real speed at those tracks plus with the wait and the (most likely) growing rep. Probably would've debuted on a decent midpack team for 2000 like Sauber or Prost where his talent and patience would've shined and he would've been (especially with his funding) would've had every team wanting his name on their cars.
And he probably would've ended up as a second driver on a 2002 Renault maybe or a 2008 Mclaren and would've won some races and had decent success. But he made all the wrong choices, had the wrong attitude and bam now he's one of the worst drivers in history.
If he had calmed his ego his funding and junior rep would've meant he could've broken into F1 at anytime he wanted but didn't take advantage of that chance so few have.

Great video...one correction would be: MasterCard didn't pull the plug on Lola. Broadley did. MasterCard were caught off guard just as Rosset and Sospiri were. Eddie Jordan hosted their corporate guests over the weekend and had already arranged a meeting with the execs on Monday by the time word got out about Lola's withdrawal.

Just realised the 3 big chassis manufacturers in Indycar- Lola (Larrousse & Mastercard), Reynard (BAR) & Dallara (Haas) all tried to make cars in F1. A reminder Rosset was born in 1967, so he was already 28 when he took runner-up in 1995. Jos & Takagi were much younger than him, but his lack of talent nor work ethic exposed in F1. Some deride Kimi Raikkonen for being "lazy", but Kimi was renowned for his great technical feedback and entrusted to do tyre testing for Michelin. Kimi was also known for sitting besides kart tracks and he could hear which kart had more power by comparing revs via their engine notes. Rosset was a modern day Dave Walker, but without the beer belly.

Always felt bad for Rosset - ended up in joke teams 3 years running, two of which were in "transition" years where the cars were terrible and had no development at all - especially given that he was clearly only there as far as the teams were concerned to fill the second car. He's way better than the trolls give him credit for, but in the internet age it's always easy for talentless lackeys who'll never sit in a race car to have "opinions".

He's still a bum to me. Finished runner up with the lowest points ever for 2nd place and in the weakest grid of the whole 90's in F3000 to Vincenzo Sospiri of all people, who wasn't F1 material either. Got anihilated by Jos Verstappen, an average F1 driver at best and Tora Takagi, a below average F1 driver.
Just look at what really good drivers did in bad cars, Alonso at Minardi, Bianchi at Marussia, Hulkenberg at Haas etc.
It's possible to shine in a bad car, Rossett only got attraction for doing stupid stuff on track and beeing terribly slow.
If you put him in the 98 Ferrari he probably would have qualified 4-5 seconds slower than Schumacher in the same car and that's the benchmark.
