    As you approach the ball, you are supposed to kick it a little without anyone seeing you do that!

    In competition, play as it lies. In friendly games, take relief to help protect the fairway.

    No to all, golf is hard 😢

    This video demonstrates why there is no relief allowed from divots. If there was, how do you interpret what is a divot and what is not? You either would need to have “no to all”, or a blanket lift clean and place.

    There are so many arguments stating that if you are on the fairway, you should not be punished, but where do you draw a line, up or downhill lies, so move it onto the flat? In freindly games, I see no issue if you all play to the same agreed rules, but in competition rules should be adhered to.

    In a comp, for money, you are disadvantaged from equal conditions (the very premise of handicap) if you have to play from another competitors' divot on the fairway. It should be a card length for 1-3, no relief for shot in the rough.

  • @tm26glf
    @tm26glf 27 днів тому +1

    Preferred lies year round on fairway, scorecard length. Simple and a more enjoyable experience for all levels of amateur golfer, why would you wanna make it harder 🧐

    If 1 was yes, someone will always try and call the 2 and 3 a 1. So no to all…. Last thing we need is debates on the course about defining what is and isn’t a divot…

    Rules of golf consider both fairway and rough as the “general area”. This whatever rule applies in one would apply to the other. Hitting a great shot only to find yourself in the divot of another player presents a disadvantage caused by an outside influence beyond that of nature. Relief is granted from cart paths, over saturated conditions and sprinkler heads as well as other notable situations. For the examples I mentioned, it applies to both ball and stance. At least allowance of a drop within 1 club length, no closer to the hole ought be applied in this situation.
    One could also apply a placement rule such as lifting and placing the ball within 1” of the edge of the divot furthest from the hole. This would mitigate lie improvement for shot angle while preventing the player for being penalized by another player not filling their divot. This would also help with managing turf disrepair in a way similar to that on the driving range where you continue back your divot in a straight line to limit how much grass you take out during a session.
    I’m aware that walking courses means divots won’t be repaired by those players. For players in carts, many still don’t fill divots with sand even when it’s provided to them and on the cart.
    Every little detail can make the difference in your ability to keep your score low. Having some divots filled and some not leaves a variable that can impact your next shot and thus your overall score.

    I believe rules are no to all ,but I think it should be allowed only if in a divot.

    No either way. It’s just unlucky. This question comes up a lot and I understand the frustration, but in reality how often does it happen to you a round?

  • @jdwond3673

    I play in a weekly league tournament. I guess between the 4 players, there would have to be a discussion of what constitutes a divot or not? Speed up the game? I think not.

  • @nathanatkins15t

    I always play it as it lies. Ive learned how to read the lie in a way that i can anticipate how the ball will emerge. When I play with guys who dont do this they often say something like "I dont know how its going to come out f here" of course you dont, you lack experience with this lie

    In my opinion is you should get free relief on the fairway in a divet but the others no

  • @heydeereman1040
    @heydeereman1040 27 днів тому

    That depends on what local rules are in effect. Under normal circumstances it's just part of the game (even though I think it should be part of the relief to smack the person who didn't repair their divot)

  • @andrewehayter
    @andrewehayter 26 днів тому

    On the fairway lift and place divot or not, it’s always mudball central in uk except for two days in September. In the Rough as it lies, you didnt hit the fairway. There has to be some advantage to finding the fairway surely ?

  • @dsc-nr5zy

    I think the rules say no relief from any of these, and that's also how i play. However, hitting the fairway and being subject to hit from a dirt or sand lie is truly dumb.

  • @mglegacy012
    @mglegacy012 27 днів тому

    The problem, as he’s illustrating, is where do you draw the line? How would you define a “divot”? What about a links course where it’s choppy all over? Two options are preferred lies in the fairway or just play it as it lies. I suppose preferred lies would be ok? Maybe people have an issue with it though

  • @Athon08
    @Athon08 26 днів тому

    Just like mud on a ball in the fairway, if you land in a divot on the fairway you shouldn’t be punished for a repaired area. Lift, clean and place a couple inches either side or behind

    If you make a rule to get relief because you got a bad lie on the fairway then should there not also be a rule that if you get a good lie in the rough you have to move it to somewhere bad?

  • @georgepyle4244
    @georgepyle4244 27 днів тому

  • @leemzgoogle917
    @leemzgoogle917 27 днів тому +10

    The rules say no relief in any of those cases. However, when I'm playing with friends I will always take relief from a divot in the fairway but NEVER from the rough. If I fail to find the fairway, that's my tough luck. But I refuse to be penalized when I land in the exact same spot as someone before me who got to play from a perfect lie. I think this ridiculous rule should be fixed, especially at the professional level where hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars are at stake.

    They make golf too easy for the pros. Difficult situations make watching golf a lot more interesting. Except for the length, it is a hell of a lot harder to play the cheapo golf course I play at than the manicured, pampered courses on TV. What is the point of a bunker when they hit out 3 feet from the hole, bogus.

    Simple rule. If you're on the fairway you can lift and place regardless of the lie (obviously no closer to the hole and within a short distance). There should never be a penalty for being on the fairway, it's a stupid old fashioned rule and should be changed. When I play with friends we always play that rule.

  • @davidfinn9828

  • @davidterrie7661

    No relief in fairway unless lift, clean, and place allowed everywhere. I grew up on a course with lots of clover where a perfect lie was lucky. I remember being astonished the first time I played a resort course with perfect grass. But then I'm a grumpy old guy. For recreational golfers, maybe a lift, clean, and place handicap allowance should be factored in when you record your score. If you're just playing for fun why not allow all lies in the fairway to be improved. Most courses are tour manicured.
