Very good reminders, thanks guys. However, would be worth covering the Rule when the ball is plugged in the face as per Ian Poulter recently. Not as straightforward as it appears when the ball is plugged in the face (free relief) or in the face but not completely clear of the bunker.
My local course does zero maintenance on the bunkers and they've even stopped adding sand. So it's just rocky clay dirt in there. Can you take any free relief when the bunker no longer resembles a bunker? Abnormal condition relief?
What if your ball splashes in the bunker in deep water after heavy downpour? Are you able to take the ball from said “watered ball” and take a free drop in bunker or nearby drop zone?
I thought the new rule allowed you to ground your club in the bunker away from you ball whilst waiting to play etc. You just cannot ground behind the ball?
Ball plugged within the vertical face of a bunker - turf and sand. What is the ruling and the options available. Sand in the bunker washed away by rain water and the ball ends up on that bare area. Free relief?
I declare my ball unplayable in a bunker. Before dropping in the bunker, am I allowed to rake the drop area? For example, when there are footprints or divots in that area.
Some bunkers are declared GUR, how does one take relief? In the direction the ball entered the bunker, or nearest point of relief no closer to the hole and can the nearest point be anywhere around the bunker as long as it’s not closer to the hole?
If the bunker is so full of water that relief is not possible within the bunker and you have to drop using stroke and distance (assuming 2 club lengths would also not be possible) is the general penalty (2 strokes) applicable or is it 1 stroke?
Hello James - I'm guessing you're talking about dropping back on line outside the bunker rather than stroke and distance, which would be going back to where you last played from? If you have to drop back on line outside the bunker because it's full of water, it's a one-stroke penalty
I had a ball completely submerge in the sand today, had to reach my hand 3 inches into the sand to find it, wish I had know this rule I would’ve taken the one shot penalty instead of the triple bogey for playing it😂 it’s been i while since I read a rules book
What about bringing the rake with you into the bunker? Is that legal? I was told it is not, since when I drop the rake I am testing the sand in the bunker.
When there's no relief from temporary water in the bunker, you said you can drop outside the bunker under penalty. Is that a one stroke or two stroke penalty?
If in water you get free relief inside the bunker but you can drop outside for a penalty of 1 shot. If the bunker is dry you can drop outside for a penalty of 2 shots
Hello Patrick - it's a one-stroke penalty. The two-stroke penalty only applies when you deem your ball in a bunker unplayable and want to take relief outside the bunker rather than in it
How about the relatively common scenario where your ball comes to rest on a slope against a rake. You obviously can't play it as it lies or you'll damage your club or the rake, but if you move the rake ball win roll down to flat. What's the ruling here? Surely not the same as pine cone ruling?
Hello Rohit - no, that's a different scenario as the pine cone is a loose impediment while a rake is a movable obstruction. If the ball moves when you move the rake, you must replace it in its original spot. If it won't stay there, you try placing it again, and it it still won't stay at rest you place it at the nearest spot in the bunker not nearer the hole where it will
Whats the rule if you rake the bunker behind you and then your ball out of the bunker . On its way out it hits the face of the bunker and lands in the area that you rake. Is it a penalty because you have improved your lie
I know you can tidy the bunker in other areas but a playing partner in a recent game takes the rake and tidied up directly behind his ball, that’s a cheat in my book. I didn’t make a thing of it because he was out of it score wise and we’d had “words” previously when he was taking the piss regarding casual water a few weeks back ( again seeking an unfair advantage imo ) Short version I don’t trust him and don’t want to play with him again

My favorite topic. Thanks for sharing for us rules geeks.
Thanks for the water in the bunker tip. Great to hear the rules again from Jezz
No problem 👍
Always great information.
Great video new golfer here… when and where do you rake the bunker? Thanks!

If your ball is in the right hand bunker, can you practice and touch the sand in the left hand bunker(not connected)?
No chance. That’s just as cheaty
If you hit a shot out of bounds from a bunker can you rake it before playing your next shot?
I declare my ball unplayable in a bunker. Before dropping in the bunker, am I allowed to rake the drop area? For example, when there are footprints or divots in that area.
Recently my ball landed within a tyre mark in the bunker, can I move it without penalty?

when ball landed on the foot print, can you move the ball from the bunker without penalty

Ball resting on a rake / moving rake would allow ball to move

Hello there - no, that's no true. You may take the rake into the bunker with you and place it down while you play your shot
What about if the ball lies within a footprint left by a previous player?
tough luck I'm afraid.

@@jeremyellwood4515 great stuff thank you
Hey guys, could you do something similar for putting??

How many shot penalty for having to drop outside the bunker from an unplayable lie? He didn’t say
Hello Tony - it's an extra shot, so a two-stroke penalty if you decide to take an unplayable lie back on line outside the bunker
Rule for bunker out of play
