    My grandmother sold eggs from her chickens when times were hard. My other grandmother was married to an owner/operator of a small grocery, about the size of a 7/11 store. He carried many families on his books, not cutting them off of credit for groceries, during the depression. There were 400 people at his funeral.

    I'm 73, and I think most people under 65 think another "Great Depression" will be as "liveable" as that of the 1930's for those who live in suburbs or rural areas - everything outside the unliveable cities - but it won't be so. That era had very little crime due to the morality of most people. Most people respected the law and respected other people. I can't imagine the hellscape that will burst forth when things fall apart. Look at how bad it is now with ongoing looting of stores, mugging of citizens, and the violent rioting of the past few years. No one anywhere will be spared the extreme hardships of life. You won't be able to go outside your own home and travel via any method to buy anything unless you go in packs to fend off feral thieves and murderers. When they are done with cities, they will come for the suburbs. Hyperbole????? We'll see. But we've already seen it in cities across the US.

      I agree. I think that only the extreme pessimists will not be surprised by the depth, duration and resulting consequences of this calamity. We have forgotten how to work together as a society. To learn mutual cooperation will take at least a generation or more. And even if there is only a 1 in 4 chance of this happening, that's huge.

The food was so salty it was all we could taste. I do not do a no spend month every time I do we end up on replacing the a/c, had to buy a new car other one bite the dust, (not brand new but new to us), every time something major goes wrong. I keep my cars until they completely fall apart and would cost more to fix than just buy another one. Although I’ve never had a 25-year old car, but I do more driving. My last car was an 18-year old car and had well over 300,000 miles on it. I donated it to a charity because I wasn’t willing to spend anymore money on it.

    Love this idea about making it a game. It reminds of the novel “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn” by Betty Smith. Dad was a day laborer who would drink away his wages before he would come home and you didn’t know when he would come home. The mom plays a game with her kids called “The North Pole” game. They were explorers stranded at the North Pole waiting to be rescued (Dad shows up with some cash). So they would do things like only heating the kitchen or they would find creative ways to stretch their food costs. Getting a soup bone with just a little bit of meat on the bone to add flavor to soup. The kids would collect bottles and other things to take to the trash picker for pennies. Sit in the dark instead of using lighting. Bartering with neighbors. While this sounds tragic, it demonstrates what you can do in a crisis. Why not play the game while you are not in a crisis and save money now?! BTW - This episode was informative and funny. Love your relationship with your dogs.

    I have one persistant issue with statements like these that you make. Its because of the simple fact that if things did get as bad as you stated "example the great depression". Lawlessness will take over and the sensible side of what you say you will do goes out the window. Families that have firearms arent going to starve without atleast trying to rob a store or person or persons. I know you dont get down with alot of the "prepping" side of people like me who value firearms and ammo as money. Heres a challenge serious question. Lets say it is the worst it has ever been as you state in this video. YOu have all your solar hooked up and your the only one on your block who has lights and goes about your day like normal. Im willing to bet that you will become a target and fast. My point is you talk about your comfort level in a NORMAL living experience when everyone else is hunting squirrels and robbing people. If you get down to the BAREBONES like you said its game over for everyone.

    • @PrepperPrincess
      @PrepperPrincess  Рік тому +15

      At least 10 houses on my block have solar. I have enough to share. I would share with my neighbors on both sides with an extension cord. You talk about lawlessness. In a great depression, there are still police. There is still a justice system. In the great depression, 70% of people still had jobs. Believing that people are going to come after you and steal YOUR stuff above all else is a grandious sense of self. What makes you SO IMPORTANT to the rest of the world that they are going to come after you. In the great depression, everyone was in the same boat. Nobody had money and everyone knew that nobody else had money either. That is why they worked together. Think of the day after 9/11. Our country could have easily went into anarchy. It didn't. Why? Because everyone was in the same boat. In a great depression, you really think people are going to be doing nothing but hunting squirrels and robbing people? That is a comic book story plot where you get to be the hero that makes it beyond anyone else because of your guns. That is not the way the world works. Have you studied how robberies really work? Did you even know that 70% of robberies take place during the day between 10am and 3pm? Didn't think so. I simply don't care that you have a problem with my way of thinking. It is a logical way of thinking while your thinking is based on fear and violence. And just FYI, I have lots of guns. But I choose not to use them unless I have to. Seems like you want an excuse so you can use yours to kill someone or prove your manhood. I have nothing to prove.

    Just a note: During the Depression there was also the Dirty Thirties because during the 1930s there was also a drought down the center of the continent and no food. No water. Animals died. Gardens had no water - no food. Yes people starved to death. Not only lakes and rivers dried up or nearly dried up completely but wells dried up. My grandfather witched 17 wells for the neighbors so they could water their livestock. His well didn't dry up. Food was shipped in from the East and West Coasts. Have you noticed the Soup Lines in those old black and white pictures do not contain any females or children in them? None of those guys have pails or boxes to take food home in. There are no families in those lines but there were families without food. There was no money to buy the food that was available. No jobs. No money. Try to imagine all that those people suffered in those 10 years.

      It hardships actually last until 1947. People had jobs, even women but food was rationed to be able to feed the troops. After the war, there was a recession 45-47’ as manufacturing was retooled from the war effort to a peace time economy. Jobs were in transition as troop reentered civilian life. My dad used to talk about life back then.

    Hi . How are you? Is the ceiling finished in the storage bedroom? I’m retired. Hopefully my pensions would continue. Now: No car, no tv, no microwave, no dishwasher. Rent and hydro legally required. Bus pass is free now for 2 years and I walk to grocery stores where most of the loyalty cards have been ruined by messed up business people. I have dozens of reusable bags already. Must have cell to live and I have internet on that. Health insurance yes for a prescription or two. Funeral prearrangements yes. Gym & pool I could stop it. Church I quit. Weight watchers I quit . Town Library now free. I don’t smoke or drink or use hash. I do have a home library. I can cook. I need to stop buying fast food. I guess I could walk dogs . I could not buy clothes . I could live on say 14,000 a year for a while. Rent will go up.

    Grew up poor, used to being austere, I have no desire to spend money. I like finding ways to stretch meals, make my clothes last, and get as many uses out of things as possible. I dont look or act cheap, and I dont push my lifestyle on anyone. Yet all these little ways can add up a lot, so do hope folks are paying attention when they see me do something or occasionally say something. I mean, I like having tools and products that help me be as self sufficient as possible. I spend where I personally think it counts. Am I not one for shopping for sake of shopping, eating out, or redecorating/renewing the house every few years? Or going to salon or buying clothes or other personal care things just because? Nah. I just dont care. But that it where my values are at. I really dont care what others do. I've got some excess, but can surely do without if need be. Much of what you mentioned.
    Having skills makes us valuable. Being able to offer a service in exchange for another service or set of goods can go far, especially when money is tight or simply not available. If actual grid down/TEOTWAWKI occurs.. game over for many. No matter how healthy one is today, a simple tooth infection can wipe someone out. Or cut. Or accident (since services and supplies may be very rare or totally unavailable) and so on. But I digress.

    I have the exact issues when I eat out. Too must processed food or preservatives in many of the meals that you would eat out. I buy whole foods and prepare meals from single ingredient items. No pre-packaged foods with ingredients that I don't know, or can't pronounce. I discovered an allergy to MSG, caused by some seasonings,sauces and spice mixes that I had purchased. Instead of paying for the next level of allergy testing, I chose to read labels and eliminate all of the ingredients that are not natural. And poof allergic reactions are gone.

I'm convinced a lot of people don't use the common sense that the Almighty gave them. Wouldn't it be nice to have a course in grade school or junior/senior high school that could teach some of the wisdom that you share with all of us? omg it's soo true! ever since I became a prepper and started eating really simple foods, I can't handle the food I used to eat anymore... and just like you, for some reason I only need wayy less calories per day but still have way more energy! it's like the body detoxed out all those unnecessary things and now it can't stand it anymore. and turns out, we don't even need all of those extra stuff in us, our body functions just fine. all I have everyday is one meal usually and a ton of green tea or black coffee and I feel completely full and satisfied.
    I used to think we needed soo many more things to live normally... but ever since I became a prepper, I discovered we hardly need much of anything! It's so fun finding ways to cancel one financial necessity after the other, and every time you do you're always surprised that you never realized you could have done so before. It really shows you how brain washed we all really are by these corporations and companies that fool us all into believing we need more than what we actually do. We over complicate everything because we're being sold the idea to spend more and more, and we easily fall for all of it! haha

    We had two 55 gallon connected rain barrels at a house we had a few years ago. We used an adapter setup on the gutter downspout…very simple to set up. It doesn’t matter about the panels on the roof, just that you have working gutters and downspouts. We watered our garden with the rain barrel water and the plants grew like crazy!
