Paragliding crash, accidentally stalling on fast beat

  • Flying from Worcestershire Beacon in a SSE wind, which is not the right wind direction for this hill, which prefers an East wind. The time of day was about 12:15. Small punchy thermals rolling across the hill. I took off and glided along the hill on the slow beat. I hit a thermal and got some good lift. I turned back on the fast beat and wrongly tried to get close to the hill, like would work if the wind was straight onto the hill. I flew out of the back of the thermal and was forced to land hard when I hadn't expected to [ I now believe I had slowed too much and stalled close to the ground, assuming I had more air speed because of my downwind ground speed ]. I absorbed the impact well with bent legs and followed through into a face plant. I was unhurt. My phone had come out of its holder. Probably some more scuff marks on my harness, but it looked ok. I fixed my phone back on. I checked my reserve handle was still in place, then flew to Church Stretton.

    As far as I can judge it looks like you stalled on site of the glider on your last turn! Look at the shadow of the wing. Thanks god you walked away.

      I hadn't thought of that. But you are right, you can see my wing spin to the right while I am still in the air. I think I was already destined to land before I stalled, but I think I would have had a better landing if I hadn't stalled. Thanks for pointing this out to me. I had thought that I had totally understood the difference between ground speed and air speed at an intuitive level, but now I can see I was tricked by the ground speed into thinking I still had enough air speed. So, I probably didn't hit sinking air, like I had assumed. I had slowed down again and again until I had too little air speed. I think the main thing to learn is keep away from the terrain whilst going downwind.

      That is correct! I once had the same hard landing at Map of Africa in Wilderness. Trying to topland, I came in with the wind a bit too low and while trying to turn into wind, I stalled the right tip 3 meters from ground. I had a sore ankle for a few weeks.

    Appreciate you trying to help other "pilots" by posting this. First off DITCH the Egocam on the Helmet. There have been many instances of line entanglement on these Egocams. PGing is like going to the casino. You want all the chips on your side. Once you start making errors:
    Egocam, inserting feet into Pod close to the ground, launching in cross conditions, scratching the hill, etc, you are losing chips & the odds of folding your hand go up.

      Yes, keeping feet out of pod close to the ground will definitely be safer. Also minimising the number of times you are close to ground will make it safer. Obviously, not flying at all will be the safest. You're right that scratching the hill in thermic conditions is not a useful or safe technique. I think helmet cam can be made less of an entanglement hazard. I have started using a shaped piece of expanded polystyrene to hold my camera and power bank, which I tape to my helmet. It looks a bit weird, but I think reduces the tangle risk considerably. I like the camera for analyzing my flights to learn from my mistakes. I'm not really thinking of helping others, but love that I get help from others by sharing.

    Thanks for sharing. So easy to do, especially when going downwind. Glad you were ok.

    I'd mark it up as a top-landing 🤪

      My first three to landings were all unplanned... not ideal... but good learning experiences.

    hey man you also got into your pod really quickly its not a bad idea to fly with your legs out of the pod and down until you have some space between you and the hill especially on weird wind days. You can still weight shift a ton but your legs are ready for action until you are a good distance from the ground / dirty air

    • @danheeksparagliding
      @danheeksparagliding  Рік тому

      yeah, not a bad idea. I've failed to get my legs out quickly enough in the past!

      When you are flying in dirty are close to the ground and you keep your legs out try to catch as much parasitic drag as possible to keep the nose tip down with your hands up. I'm only a potato myself but if I was a pilot I would try to keep the parasitic dray high close to the ground by staying out of the pod.

    Is not crash!!
    Is very bad toplanding!!😂😂😂❤❤❤

    such a beautiful green grassy hill. This type of error elsewhere means landing/hitting bushes/trees or rocks. A good place to make small mistakes and learn from them

    Way to get the legs down! Lots of folks smash their back up making similar mistakes but you gave yourself some margin at least with PLF

    A little bit more height and you could receive some serious injuries.

    You panicked and pulled hard right brake and the wing spun, you can see it in the shadow

      Yes, it looks like it. I think I hadn't understood that I was flying downwind and ended up flying too slowly.

    I'd have called it a helicopter side-hill landing rather than a crash ;)

    • @danheeksparagliding
      @danheeksparagliding  Рік тому

      Yes, I guess it's only a "crash" if something gets broken. I had been surprised by how I suddenly dropped at the end, which made me exaggerate :)
