You can't just land wherever you want!
Thursday 11th July 2024. I managed to get to cloudbase after 5pm. I tried to go XC to Hereford, but only got half way. I got told off for landing in someone's field.

Landing on Oyster Hill
Переглядів 622 місяці тому
9th May 2024. Worcestershire Beacon. Advance Sigma 10. There were thermals, but I only got up to about 800m. I had a problem with my speed bar; the elastic had broken holding the foot stirrup in position. I retied it, but too short, so had to untie it again. I glided out to Oyster Hill, 5.5km from where I started. My wife and daughter drove out to get me.

Worcestershire Beacon, wind from the north. Good enough thermals. The forecast had been for lighter wind and I had been hoping to fly beyond Worcester and back, but following thermals took me off to the South. I almost got to the clouds at one point. Landed at the edge of Malvern and got a lift from my mother-in-law.
Almost an hours flying

Wednesday 1st May 2024. I walked up the hill with my wife. Got to the top of the Worcestershire Beacon just after 11:00. There were two paragliderists on the hill, who I chatted to. When I was ready to launch, I could see a buzzard climbing lower down the ridge, but then I lost sight of it again. Some wind came through and I launched straight into a thermal and worked it above the hill. I got t...

Friday the 26th of April 2024. I walked up the hill just before 10:30 and got to the east take off just before 11. I was the only paraglider up there. I had forgotten to pack the cable for my helmet camera, so only got the first half of the flight on video. Despite being the least windiest day I've flown in this year, there was still quite a bit of wind. It wasn't the best launch. As the wing w...

Sunday 14th April 2024. My first time paragliding in over 7 months. It was forecast to be almost too windy. It almost was too windy. I spent at least an hour flying around in front of the hill waiting for the thermals to get good enough, as it got steadily windier. I really wanted to leave the hill and I ended up taking a thermal over the back without a huge amount of height. There was scary tu...

Friday 8th September 2023. The forecast was predicting 4 star thermals at 3pm and 4pm. I got up the hill just after 1:30pm and waited for a couple of hours. A Brief Moment of Ecstasy

An afternoon off work, getting near to cloudbase on my paraglider, getting a wave returned by a sailplane and getting treated to a close flyby all combine to induce a brief moment of ecstasy, which is embarrassingly audible in my voice. 20 minutes later I was back on earth and back to reality in Worcester.

Depends on the tone of voice and body language, couldn't see/hear any of it but if you're like me, you'll return the energy that you receive and so he must have been very polite. Otherwise, someone barking "you can't just land where ever you like" would have been met with "you can't just talk to who ever you like"

I was told at school that we'd gone metric in the UK. I'm into science, technology, engineering etc. and it's all metric. Paragliding is massive in the European Alps, and they all use metres for altitude there. We have to change to metres here one day, so I'm ready for it. The software on my phone shows altitude in metres larger than it does in feet. The hill I launch from has its altitude marked on all the maps in metres, so I like to know how high I am relative to the hills. The only annoying thing is the airspace altitudes. Fortunately I never need to talk to any air traffic controllers from my paraglider. :)

Mate of mine had his hangie skewered by a bale spike by a farmer, it wasnt even his land, hangie destroyed, farmer tried to blame his neighbour, it ended in court with the farmer paying for the damage. You get good and bad but mostly a positive reception, so long as you keep away from livestock and cultivated land, as i told people when i was a coach, always pick the safe option to land, you can pay for damages later, not that i am in any way condoning landing where damage can result, broken backs are for life.

I'm not a pilot, and I don't know what the rules are, by I'm with the farmer. Surely you should only be able to land on a site for which you have permission, and to do otherwise is trespassing. "I had hoped to go further" isn't good enough.

    • @danheeksparagliding
      @danheeksparagliding 4 дні тому

You are right. It is trespassing. I won't be landing there again. I know I don't have a right to land wherever I want. I usually manage to find somewhere to land where I don't upset anyone. If I understand the weather well enough, I can fly 100km with no engine and just the contents of my rucksack and land exactly where I choose. Sometimes, though, I get it wrong and run out of options. This is an example of this.

Well, it seems the vast majority of these comments fall on the side of the paraglidist. Even though this person needs no license or have done any training to operate this thing, but more importantly is not required to have any insurance beyond his own personal travel insurance. .......unlike the landowner with his car or tractor. I am going to give you the perspective of the inconvenienced land owner, so lets put this little hypothetical situation of trespass forward........ If you are working in your shed earning a living and you are dragged away from that job by someone who climbs through your rear house window and knocks over some house plants that you were going to sell and he destroys them, when you confront this uninvited guest about it and their reply is "that your house was the only one with an open window" do you have the right to be tad upset.? Then.....he asks you to unlock the front door so you can leave and expects you to be polite to him. This is no different than being dragged away from servicing your farm machinery to accommodate an uninvited paraglidist who drops into your field and tramples all over your crops and feels entitled that you should be nice to him. By-Laws should be in place that allow land owners to charge a landing fee, much like airports do, to anyone who drops in uninvited. Oh how these people would plan their landing places a little more carefully if that was so. Bring on the entitled abuse.......

During a flexwing fly-in even here in the USA, one of our friends experienced an engine out and put it down in a field much like the one in this video. The radio call went out, and I was the nearest pilot, so I turned towards the location being called out, and went to make sure he was alright. When I flew over, our friend had set the aircraft down safely and was already talking to the farmer who had come out to greet him. By the time I landed, the sun was about to set, and other friends with trucks and trailers made their way to pick the downed pilot up.........only to find that he, the farmer and family where all having dinner, over some cold beers as our pilot buddy told them flying stories. : )

Given the challenges farmers face I have a new found appreciation for their 'between a rock and a hard place' demeanour. Most don't know how to do life differently, and we can all be so thankful they have a real resistance to otherwise just giving up and selling up to property developers. In fixed-wing gliding more gliders have retractable engines than not these days, and there is less of a culture of willingness to spend a day driving a trailer around and collecting someone from a field. As such landing out in a field is becoming a thing rarely seen. There will always be pure gliders, but I am sortof glad that we don't disturb the farming community as much as we used to. I had the misfortune around 15 years ago to land in a field having forgotten my mobile phone. The farmer could not be any less pleased to see me there, but he did ultimately loan me his phone to call for my crew. They're great people at heart but have so much to contend with. As has been said already, being explanatory polite and apologetic goes a long way. I've had a lot of success with inviting kids to sit in the glider for pictures or offfering them to come to the club and have a flight at my expense. Sadly none have ever actually taken my up on the latter, but its the gesture that counts. I've also had the misfortune of landing in a field that a commercial balloon flight had landed in some weeks before - It had done some significant crop damage during their retreive and scooted out before the farmer had been able to arrive at the field. Insurance ended up involved in that one, as the glider was held ransom to the demand of a £500 sum for damages despite all my attempts to diffuse the situation having caused no damage at all as the field was now harvested and about to be ploughed.
