  • I forgot to mention the incredible NHS staff and the outrageous cuts on the NHS are an insult to the talent and work that is so important (well apart from the nurse who hit my hand - boo)
It's been such a long time since I've done a Vlog but I really want to start doing more frequent Vlogs, reviews etc again, subscribe for more.
I wanted to do a video about my experience getting a type of Endoscopy called a 'gastroscopy', I had two separate procedures one with sedation and one without. Hope this helps anyone, and I'm happy to answer any questions x

I watched this video before my endoscopy and thought I’d come back here to share my experience.
The entire procedure was painless, effortless and just purely wonderful. I never thought I’d say that.
The only pain you’ll feel is the needle going into your hand for the anaesthesia. Once you get sedated, it’s 1-2 seconds before you fall fast asleep.
What feels like 10 seconds passes, then you have a nurse next to you saying, ‘All done’. You’ll be saying, ‘That’s it?’
You feel great after waking up. It’s pretty much like a good night’s rest.
Don’t be scared everyone. I have severe health anxiety and if I can say it was painless, you KNOW it’s going to be fine.
    Good luck.

for everyone who's afraid and still have to do this procedure, i want to share my experience, i had mine today
i was sooo scared and i had so much anxiety that i cried in front of the nurses, i told them everything i was afraid of and they reassured me and we went for the sedation.

Alright so, my experience guys. Everything before the procedure is ehhh, normal hospital stuff with IVs etc. Now, for what you really want to know!! Once they take you back, I got oxygen, laid me on my left side, they then say the drug IV is going into the tube which is already in your vein. Maybe 5 sec of a warm, spicy, nice feeling and BAM!!! I’m out!! Don’t feel, see or hear anything. I woke up in recovery and felt good to go. So sedation is the way to go man. You literally have nothing to worry about for any of you getting this done. It’s super quick.

Just had mine today and it all went well. (I also had an attempted transnasal endoscopy with just the spray, all went horribly wrong, and I was sent for a standard scope with sedation)
    My tips...
    1. **Get the sedation if you want to get it**( It's a big faff to arrange someone to pick you up, especially if you don't have family nearby, but friends can be more obliging than you think. It is so much easier with the sedation. Don't let them push you into getting the other way by saying it's just 'uncomfortable'.
    2. If you're uncomfortable with any aspect of the procedure, especially beforehand - speak up
    3. Don't be afraid to ask for staff to be sensitive to your needs, even if this means discreetly asking for a different nurse (I did this and I'm glad I did) Admittedly, this is easier in a bigger hospital
    4. Write down everything you want to ask or tell the doctor before you go in, because you might be too nervous on the day to remember.

Thank you for sharing your experience John! I remember my mother (80 years old) going through several colonoscopies (if you can imagine) with zero sedation. The doctor was in a hurry don't you know. I have an upper GI in my future and I will be sure to ask questions about the form of sedation. I've had other 'sedation' which amounted to a 2 mg dose of valium....It takes 10 mgs just to help me with anxiety, so some doctors have trouble communicating. Once again, GREAT job of telling us, and bless the staff at the second hospital who made you feel cared for.

Had mine done today without sedation. Went better than expected. The camera goes in quickly and once past your throat (2-3 seconds) you can then control any gagging. The camera was much smaller than expected and it wasnt difficult to swallow at all. Once down you simply feel a hardish tube in your throat. If you focus on this you may gag, but if you try to ignore and focus on breathing then you'll be OK. The actual Inspection took 2-3 minutes maximum and they simply wthdraw the camera at the end and you're done. In summary, I was concerned about swallowing the camera but this wasn't an issue as the consultant glides this down for you. The stiffness of the tube was mildly uncomfortable but thats all it was. Nothing you can't cope with for a couple of minutes. I would liken the tube size to that of a Mcdonalds straw (the plastic one).

Everyone told me to get the drugs and I would consider myself a very nervous patient as I've not had a procedure in hospital ever. The team handling you makes a big difference. I had an excellent nurse that talked me all the way thru the event, what was going on, how long I had left , etc etc.
By far the worst bit is the throat spray, it's like hot bananas. You get hit once with it and then they hit you again a minute later. Then, because you can't feel your throat you think you might be choking and for about 20 seconds you kinda have a little freakout until you realise that you are indeed breathing thru your nose / mouth.
There was no gagging, none at all. There was no pain either - you are aware of it moving around but it doesn't feel terrible, you burp a bit because they shoot you with air a couple of times, but I was able to go "uh-huh" "mmm" "ahh" in response to the nurse, similar to the dentist chair. I didn't want to be all loopy on drugs, the whole thing takes less than 5 mins and you get up and walk off after it - bit of a scratchy throat for a few hours after but no stomach issues.
This video helped with the decision making process, so thanks @John & Things. I wouldn't be worried to get it done again, but I also wouldn't shove my way to the front of the que either.

Thank you so much for making this video! Most of the online info is along the lines of “you may feel slight pressure” etc, it’s like a conspiracy of silence to make sure you go ahead with the procedure!!
I know three people who’ve had it done without sedation and all of them were traumatised by it. I have an insanely sensitive gag reflex - there’s no way on earth they’d be able to get that tube inside me without knocking me out. I told my consultant that I have a phobia of choking and being sick and he said “you’ll be ok, it’s not going to be as bad as you think”. He was a nice guy but he didn’t take seriously the difference between feeling nervous about this procedure (which I’m guessing is most people) and feeling panic-stricken. He has noted on the referral that I’ll need sedation but even then I’m not sure that I can go through with it… 😭

I had mine today, and had the sedation and they numb my throat too, which was strange, as you go numb in your throat, tongue and lips. Then thy put the mouth guard in and was a bit strange then they sedated me, can remember bits, so they give me a bit more sedation. The nurses were amazing, reassuring me all the time.I gagged a few times and was crying, so they give me a bit more sedation, remember waking up being wheeled away into recovery bay, had a cup of tea and lots of trapped wind. It’s the second time getting this procedure done, so I knew what to expect, and I think that’s why I was more anxious . The first time I had it I was sedated but vomited halfway through it and I was worried that would happen again. Couldn’t fault the nursing team so fridenly and joking with me to make me feel relaxed. Thought I'd give an update now I've had it. I was really nervous going in but after they drugged me up, I was out like a light. All I remembered after was gagging for a few moments. It was a bit bizarre. Afterwards the sedation took maybe 3-4 hours after I got home to fully wear off. It actually made me feel rather dead inside and not my usual animated self. I can't say I enjoyed the experience, but I'm definitely happy I had the sedation.

I so desperately just didn’t want to go through it again - so to have the letter come through again just made me blow up. I had a gastroscopy about 4 years ago without sedation. I had a panic attack after the numbing throat spray was put in. I couldn't feel myself swallow. I thought I couldn't breathe which of course I could really. They did it but I did gag a lot. I had another yesterday I was again advised not to have sedation as the proceedures often take longer, I was worried that with sedation I would feel out of control. So I did it without sedation. I have to say the staff were amazing I had told them how anxious I was. The told me that in the last 4 years the endoscope are now smaller etc. The were lovely very calming. This time the throat spray numbed my throat but I could still feel myself swallowing so I didnt panic. I did gag 2 times but when it happened the nurse just calmly said just concentrate you can breathe around the tube it's fine when I concentrated on my breathing as she was getting me to do it was so much easier. They started at 5.53 and by 6.00 I it was all over. It is not a nice procedure, but I would not be scared if I had to have another. Because I did not have sedation I was able to leave 15 mins later, while people that had sedation in proceedures before me were still there. I was able to eat and drink fine this time i had no pain. I think the key was as the nurse said concentrating on slow steady breathing. If I had to have another I would definitely do some calming breathing exercises before I went in.

I had mine less than 2 hours ago, with sedation, and it was a very smooth procedure. First the spray to numb my mouth, and then an injection with the sedative. I was feeling woozy (giving me a strangely comfortable feeling), but stayed awake (sort of). Hardly noticed when the tube went in, and it was over in a jiffy. According to the time stamp on the images that they gave me afterwards, the whole procedure took all but 5 minutes, but even felt shorter than that. Then one hour for recovery, and that was that! Anyone feeling anxious about a gastroscopy, rest assured there is no reason to, honestly!

My grandad had it done regularly because of a bleeding ulcer and he didn't use to have a sedation,he was fine because he was used to it. My hubby had it done several times always with a sedation now, hubby got a nasty looks and the staff launched into a tirade about how hubby was a timewaster etc. Husband put his foot down and insisted ,when he mentioned he has panic attacks the staff instantly changed their minds and gave him sedation with no further nastyness. My sister had it done at a different hospital and they basically said no you can't have sedation and tried to force it into her throat while being held down!! She was later told by a gp she should have phoned the Dept up beforehand and made it plain (demanded)a sedation because some hospitals won't do them on the spot. They have to be pre arranged. So that is what sister will do next time. I'm sorry you had a bad experience but if you have it again I would phone the hospital beforehand to talk about/arrange a sedation mention your anxiety . If I have to have it it's what I will do and I won't get put off by them saying no ,other people get sedated don't they. Same experience for me, no sedation, just throat numbing spray, but amazing nurse and doctor. However I have very strong gagging reflex so was not only "vomitting" and having lots of bitter dark stomach juices coming out while crying but also burbing like crazy all the time and you basically cannot control it. You feel the extreme discomfort and humiliation at the same time and cannot do anything about it. In the end also some blood came out. They had to try 2x to insert the tube as I was not able to take it in at first and started to panick as I could not breath. It was short but guys definitely get sedated if you can. One of the worst experiences of my life and extremely humiliating indeed. All this to find out if I am not gluten intollerant...🤢🤦🏻‍♀️ My advice is try your best to relax your tongue and breath calmly through your mouth, not nose. And hold lots of tissues by your mouth to catch all the liquids..Good luck to all. Maybe it's not that horrifying experience for everyone and I have to remind myself that the doctors and nurses are used to seeing this and only want the best for you.

I figured I might be able to go without but my step sister, who is very strong emotionally tried with no sedation and could NOT do it lol I also figured the throat spray would make me feel like I couldn't swallow and so I just thought I would see what the doctor thought. When I went in it pretty much was a given that be I was gonna get sedation due to heart rate going up and I thought ok, I had it last time for the colonoscopy and it was fine so let's just do it. They gave me the maximum dose and honestly it was NOT scary - it just feels like you are stirring in your sleep and it detaches you from fully being aware of the procedure. I remember gagging a few times but it was tolerable. It helped too, that they give you oxygen so you don't have to worry about getting enough air in. I had a gastroscopy today and I opted for no sedation - I'm happy with the choice I made. It's an odd feeling rather than painful - the worst part for me was going through the back of the mouth but it really wasn't painful or uncomfortable. The first 10 seconds or so is just weird and you think this is going to be horrible but it just wasn't although I was happy when it was over. I had no gagging, no retching and I breathed normally through my mouth. My jaw hurt a bit but that was because I was biting too hard and when I relaxed it was fine.
I had 4 biopsy samples taken - 2 in the stomach and 2 in the oesophagus - I can feel a sight soreness in the latter but the while procedure was really OK. They pumped a little bit of air into my stomach and then my oesophagus in order to get the samples and when it was over I belched like a good 'un.
So, the worry about the experience was far more traumatic than the actual experience itself for me. I'm not going to rush back and ask for another but I wouldn't have the dread next time like this time if I had to go back. And, I would again opt for no-sedation.

And you get to see inside of yourself on a TV screen, which is quite remarkable and interesting ! 😄

I've just had an endoscopy without sedation, and it was honestly fine. They just sprayed my throat and numbed it, the nurse told me what to do and not to do (Don't swallow after it's in, take deep breaths). I gagged a little bit when the scope went into my esophagus (that's the worst part of the whole experience), but then it was fine, just lie down and breathe. The whole thing lasted about 5 minutes. Sure, it's uncomfortable, but nothing horrible. But I guess it depends on the individual and the skill of the doctor performing it.

Thank you so much for posting this video. I had mine done last week and I’m super traumatised. I’m American living here in the U.K. Both my parents had this procedure done in America where they put you completely under. I did my procedure without sedation because when I had sedation for my colonoscopy it did not help my anxiety. I gagged like crazy and at one point I felt like they were holding me down. I found the procedure to be super invasive and horrible. I am shocked and appalled that the NHS offer Endoscopy’s without sedation. It is a terrible and disgusting procedure and it’s sick that they put people through this.

Thanks for sharing your experiences. I'm going in tomorrow and am dreading it. I've had swallowing and breathing problems (just certain foods taking longer to go down and feeling like I don't have enough air and breathing shallower/not being able to take a full yawn) for nearly a year. Also sleep apnea occasionally (gasping for breath or just stopping breathing for a few seconds in the night and waking up). Also, burping and occasional hiccups which I didn't have before. I was treated for H Pylori after testing positive but my symptoms didn't go. My Mum had an endoscopy (age 76) and she told me it wasn't nice but she coped well by just breathing calmly (a bit difficult I would imagine). Mum panics a lot more than me generally and is claustrophobic so I keep thinking if she managed ok so can I. The neighbour who is a very nervous man told me similar. Mum or the neighbour didn't have sedation but think I will. I know it means waiting around in the hospital more after but I'd rather do that.

Thank you for sharing this. I totally got you when you said you had a weird but enjoyable feeling after the sedated procedure. I wasn't sedated for endoscopy and it was difficult but I was sedated for colonoscopy ! :)) I screwed up by taking my girlfriend with me to drive me there which was terrible after wearing that ridiculous gown and exposing my bottom! and after I woke up, they said I kissed my girlfriend in front of everybody! I was feeling awesome! It was like being drunk! And on the way home, my gf told me that I will take you for colonoscopy whenever you are not nice to me!

I had a gastroscopy without sedation this morning. I wouldn't go so far as to say that it was "traumatic", but I understand the feeling. It's not an experience I that will easily forget. I think it largely depends on the person and your tolerance to discomfort. That being said, for those considering no sedation, I think it's still a good option, mainly due to the fact that it doesn't last long. I took no sedation because I had plans for today, had to bike home, and I have fear of needles (which is actually a greater fear than having a tube shoved down my throat). If you have nothing to do that day, don't mind needles, and have a lift home, than indeed, sedation is probably way easier. If it was a 20 minute procedure I would definitely want sedation, but 5 minutes is manageable. When the tube came out I felt huge relief, which was actually pretty nice. It is not painful, just an unusual and unwelcome feeling. The best you thing you can do is focus on breathing through your nose.
