    Okay sorry well I need to do an experiment but this one involves different concentrations of yeast I am just wondering how do we calculate these molarities like what is the original amount of yeast that is one mol? Thanks so much

      Yes, you measure how much gas is being produced by how much water is being displaced by the gas. You can't see or count the gas molecules so you have to have a way to measure how much is being produced. Water gets displaced by gas accumulating in an overturned tube filled with water so it works perfectly for this lab. You can visualize and measure how much gas is being produced with this technique. Lab techniques are just clever applications of natural phenomena.

      In this experiment we are testing to see if the rate of reaction changes when you change the concentration of enzyme. You can also run this experiment where you change the concentration of the substrate, change the pH or change the temperature to see if the rate of reaction changes. A valid hypothesis is any hypothesis that can be tested. An example of a valid hypothesis for this experiment is as the concentration of enzyme increases the reaction rate will increase. There are many variation on this that are also valid. for example, as the concentration of enzyme increases the rate of reaction will decrease or as the concentration of enzyme increases the rate of reaction will stay the same. A hypothesis is a possible answer to a scientific question and as long as it is testable and in the form of a statement, it is a valid hypothesis.

      The main four factors that affect enzyme action are enzyme concentration, substrate concentration, temperature and pH. The effect of these four factors on the rate of enzyme action are best represented with line graphs with the rate of enzyme action increasing on the y axis and the factor increasing on the x axis.

    Why does the water decrease in the tube

      +naveed ehsan The amount of water in the overturned graduated cylinder decreases because it is being displaced by the oxygen gas molecules that are being pushed through the tubing from the reaction chamber. The oxygen gas molecules rise to the top of the graduated cylinder and collect there displacing or pushing the water down and out the bottom of the graduated cylinder. The faster the oxygen gas is being produced in the reaction chamber, the faster it will be pushed through the tube and collect at the top of the graduated cylinder. This allows you to measure quantitatively (with numbers) the rate of the reaction in the reaction chamber. You can't see the oxygen gas exiting the tube but you can see it when it collects at the top of an overturned graduated cylinder filled with water. The oxygen gas molecules are causing the water to decrease in the tube.
