My music teacher hated the missing features in Movie Maker Live so much that he still had us use Movie Maker 2.1 (this was only a couple of years ago). It has some annoying crash bug when editing title cards that resulted in me crashing Movie Maker and losing my unsaved work so many times that I managed to figure out exactly how to trigger it and got in the habit of saving every time before I put in a title card. I kind of miss Movie Maker, not because it was any good, but because it was convenient and free. It is a pain to find a good, easy to use, free video editor for PC.
Meanwhile, the final version of Movie Maker had a bug where if the file got too big (that being, from my observation, a video 1 hour+ long) the program had a random chance of crashing. So, when editing a video that was an hour or several hours long, I had to make sure to save periodically in case it would crash while I was editing. Also, the trigger in that case was generally an attempt to trim.

I was so confused when I saw that my parents XP PC had a different Movie Maker interface than my pc and couldn't wrap my hand around it! Thank you for solving this decade old mystery.
If it's one thing Windows Movie Maker did, was unknowingly giving a good majority of the public a sort of entry way into video editing in a way that was mostly reserved for those who either had the cash to afford that equipment or took up videography in school. The entry-way was very limited and it was really more a niche/geek thing for someone who wanted to get into electronics, filmmaking or broadcasting. Back in the 90's, I used to pick up issues of "Videomaker Magazine" at a local convenience store and gazed over all the articles and ads for a lot of neat products that were coming out there. The "Video Toaster" you showed in your clip was one of the best video editing software/hardware titles you could get for an Amiga computer at the time (preferably a 2000/3000/4000 model). I saw one of these in college back in the mid 90's but never got to work on one. medium.com/people-gadgets/the-gadget-we-miss-the-video-toaster-93509e978549 The Commodore Amiga (especially the 500 model) was one early entry way for many budding video enthusiasts to produce their own videos using programs developed for the computer to create titles to animation and other features as the Amiga had composite outputs available to plug into any VCR. Each product was near or close to broadcast quality for its time and I only wished I had bought these things when they were new. I remember using Windows ME and the Windows Movie Maker that came with it, I experienced more crashes than a Nascar rodeo! When I got Adobe Premiere 6.5 back in 2003 it changed everything and it's what I've used to edit all my videos on ever since, I even still use it as my main video editor today.
You can actually still do a lot more than you'd expect with WMM6 these days. I still use it with some of my music videos only because I'm a sucker for those cheesy old film effects. There are also tonnnnns of third party plugins for it.
I used Movie Maker all the way until 2012. And I still use it for some random tiny tasks even though I have PowerDirector. Thanks for this. =D Brings back some good memories.
Microsoft Windows Movie Maker > Sony Vegas > Adobe After Effects > VideoPad Editor It's sad to see it go, especially with the massive role it played in the history of the Internet as we know it today.
Fun fact movie maker is included now in the Microsoft photo app, when you go to the extended things in configuration you enable the video thing and there it is. Probably was included for sideshow but it is the full program just into another program.
Believe it or not, Windows Movie Maker 2.x and 6.0 actually supported custom transitions and effects (custom titles were a thing too, but no official documentation for _that_ exists for whatever reason) using XML. I'm sure only a handful of UA-camrs bothered to even install or use custom transitions and/or effects on Movie Maker...
I actually needed a quick and simple title card for messing around with VHS recording and I straight up loaded up a Windows XP VM and used Movie Maker to make them from pre-baked images. Still a solid program for simple tasks
Are you going to cover the story behind Windows ME one day? I fell like I'm the only one who ever used it. I thought it was pretty good; tidier and probably what Win 95 and 98 should have been.
I've used it, but I remember doing a few system recoveries that never fully fixed the issues I've experienced later on. Not once have I had to use a system recovery for Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows 8.1, or Windows 10.
Fuck every video had that song and I hated it, I'd go out of my way to mute the video. But now I love it, it brings a ton of nostalgia not to mention one of a good UA-cam.
How to make a tutorial Record it with bandicam Edit it in movie maker Have some techno music playing in the background Have a minecraft wallpaper (sexy videogame babes are also fine) And a cluttered desktop
I started UA-cam 10 years ago, before 009 Sound System Dreamscape, 480p resolution and widespread use of Movie Maker for UA-cam videos (most were unedited).
Windows Movie Maker was a classic for me when I was a kid. Including Corel Video Studio, which is an advance video editing software I first used from an old Windows 7 laptop in 2013, compare to Sony Vegas.
I'll be honest. No program is shitty or useless, if you know how to use it right. I use Windows Movie Maker (the 2012 version) to edit together my videos. I tend to use little to no transitions, and always try to think outside of the box. Simply, I do everything I can to make it seem like it ISN'T Movie Maker. It's actually pretty reliable, and can export videos in 1080p HD quality, not just 480p. And best of all, it was free. Why pay over $300 dollars for Sony Vegas or something similar when you could pay nothing for something that's still a pretty good program?
I absolutely agree. I also use Movie maker 2012 for my videos but I use the animations for comedic effect and so forth. Yeah sure, it looks bad but it works to it's advantage. Plus for a free editing software, it really is impressive on what you can do with it. Push its capabilities to its max if you will.
@@northernplacecorporation I’m not even going to read what I originally said, I was a child and everything is null in void Pirate everything, and every customer is happy Vegas plus Sapphire is a buggy but effective dream lol
With Windows Movie Maker, I was able to make a Disney knockoff consisting of public domain cartoons. It was never released since the distributer complained about the "low bitrate", something which I never succeeded getting around it, even when using a video conversion software. I hope that Microsoft Story Remix would solve this.
Microsoft seems to have a habit of making stuff with potential, then killing them off with or without a good alternative in the works. I remember that Windows Movie Maker 2012 does not have the option of importing custom effects even though previous versions did support them.
Still using Windows Live Movie Maker from 2012. I got it a couple of years ago when I started YT before they took down the download link. I still use it and I really like it. May be making a video tonight.
I used to use Movie Maker back when I used Windows 7 before I switched to Mac. Even back then, Apple's iMovie was miles ahead in terms of capability and UI design. (And that still holds true now.) Apple's been the leader when it comes to content/art creation. While I use Premiere Pro right now, I hope to switch to Final Cut Pro sometime in the future because of its faster render times.

Fun fact - if you look online, there are some alternate sites offering downloads for Windows Live Movie Maker 2012, meaning it’s essentially not dead. You have to be careful, though, as a lot of them are just adware or viruses.
one of the main reasons why maker was good for me in the past was its accessibility. I don't have much experience with higher end video editors, but from the looks of things, most of them cannot be read with a screen reader. This is something which has push me to iMovie on the Mac, as it is the only good enough video editor I have been able to find for free which seems to work okay with the screen reader.
I used to use Windows Live Movie Maker to make videos up until this year when I switched to Magix Pro Plus. What annoyed me about WMM was that it pre-rendered every video to WMV before you could edit it. This made even simple videos a pain to edit. Despite this I do miss its dead simple layout. Everything is spelled out for you and you don't have to go stumbling about like in Magix.
Now do a brief history of Hypercam and why it was so popular with late 2000s UA-cam when other free demos of screen capturing programs existed at the time such as VideoSpirit, BSR, and Bandicam.

Yeah, push it to the max. That's exactly what I do.
because i can pirate Sony Vegas Pro 13 and works like a charm, that's why
I use VEGAS Pro, which is way more primitive for video editing needs than Movie Maker.
@@northernplacecorporation I’m not even going to read what I originally said, I was a child and everything is null in void
Pirate everything, and every customer is happy
Vegas plus Sapphire is a buggy but effective dream lol
I am watching in 240p and it brings me back
Hey welcome to another episode of a brief history, this episode windows movie maker. Ready, set, go!
I've actually used movie maker to make stop motion animations.
Melissa0774 stop motion on movie maker is way easier than the other software
Thank you movie maker for our YTPs that we have now!!!
With Windows Movie Maker, I was able to make a Disney knockoff consisting of public domain cartoons. It was never released since the distributer complained about the "low bitrate", something which I never succeeded getting around it, even when using a video conversion software. I hope that Microsoft Story Remix would solve this.
That blue screen after Windows Me was hilarious!
The biggest change from Windows Movie Maker 6.0 to Live Movie Maker was the timeline. Editing videos without a drag-and-drop timeline killed it.
Windows movie Maker holds a special place in my heart, but once I used Sony Vegas and audacity, I never could go back.
Great video m8, made me remind the days of old...
WIndows ME > Blue Screen, man u cracked me up! xD such a nice, accurate, reference!
I like the late 2000's realistic icons style
i am definitely going to rate this 5 stars :D
This video came out on my birthday! Can I get a shout out from the science elf himself? Great video btw! 😊
Thanks. Happy Birthday Evolze! :)
009 sound system dreamscape is unironically my favorite electronic song.
Microsoft seems to have a habit of making stuff with potential, then killing them off with or without a good alternative in the works. I remember that Windows Movie Maker 2012 does not have the option of importing custom effects even though previous versions did support them.
All true warriors strive for Windows Movie Maker!
2:50 MEmories
WMM 2.6 or bust!
Seriously though, I'll always have fond memories of this now primitive software. Good times were had with and thanks to it!
Still using Windows Live Movie Maker from 2012. I got it a couple of years ago when I started YT before they took down the download link. I still use it and I really like it. May be making a video tonight.
I never really watched it then. But i remember a little bit about old youtube.
Ah! The memories! The nostalgia! I used Movie Maker on my old laptop. Now I use VideoPad.
in 2008:
low video-recorded with webcam
ok-recorded with unregistread hycam2 and with 009 soundsystem, winxp display 800×600
Pr0Oofesional: recorded with anathoer screen recorder, anathoer music, maybe voiceover, 1366×760, winvista
Fun fact - if you look online, there are some alternate sites offering downloads for Windows Live Movie Maker 2012, meaning it’s essentially not dead. You have to be careful, though, as a lot of them are just adware or viruses.
I used to make my garbage with MS Paint, Pivot, and Nero Vision. Oh yeah, I was cool.
KILLERONROAD I made my channel pic using MS Paint
Y4123 *in 2017 and ugly*
I used Kai's super goo to make enhanced versions of my ass
For Your Suprise, Movie Maker And Photo Gallery Were Archived, That Means All Versions
480p? Ha! More like 240. (Great video though, nice that more people are documenting internet history like this!)
It's not like everybody just happened to choose the same song, that song was just the default replacement for audio UA-cam determined was copyrighted
Unlike Movie Maker, Paint is still used for stuff like indie games with a 8 bit art style (the windows xp edition, not 7)
one of the main reasons why maker was good for me in the past was its accessibility. I don't have much experience with higher end video editors, but from the looks of things, most of them cannot be read with a screen reader. This is something which has push me to iMovie on the Mac, as it is the only good enough video editor I have been able to find for free which seems to work okay with the screen reader.
loved that outro music 👌👌
I used to use Windows Live Movie Maker to make videos up until this year when I switched to Magix Pro Plus. What annoyed me about WMM was that it pre-rendered every video to WMV before you could edit it. This made even simple videos a pain to edit. Despite this I do miss its dead simple layout. Everything is spelled out for you and you don't have to go stumbling about like in Magix.
Now do a brief history of Hypercam and why it was so popular with late 2000s UA-cam when other free demos of screen capturing programs existed at the time such as VideoSpirit, BSR, and Bandicam.
