Great lesson!! Michael is a monster player and totally changed my understanding of “shred” guitar when his debut album came out. Hearing Michael changed the way I play for ever!
Oh, yes, Blues Saraceno's Plaid album was really really great that time, really listened to it a lot! And Firkins "Deja Blues", also such a great song!
That first album was something else . I honestly thought he would kick on and be the next Jeff Beck. All round great guy and still doing shows all over the world . Great video Dave I’m going to try these on my Pacifica 1221
years ago in the 2000s, not longer after i started playing, i noticed one day the sargasso sea was in amongst my music files. no idea how it got there, and it took me forever to find out who the artist was because it only had that title and there was very little info about firkins on the web at the time. i can't explain how much that album blew me away. to this day it's still a top 10 guitar album for me.
Thanks again! Greatest channel on UA-cam. I've loved Firkins since he came out. Caught him at a clinic at Reliable Music in Charlotte back in the day. I don't remember the amp but he only used one of those yellow boss overdrive pedals, and his sound was exactly like the record, all in his fingers. ❤
Thanks for putting this lesson together David. I wore out that 1st MLF cassette tape lol! When I saw Jeff Pilson was playing bass on that album, I knew it was going to be awesome. "Space Crickets", "Rain In The Tunnel", and "Deja Blues" are absolutely killer tracks. The phrasing, the mixture of styles, the speed and then softness of his playing are so unique. I also had never heard anyone play with a whammy bar consistently like that (as I was not familiar with Jeff Beck back in the day, I was only about 80's metal/hard rock). Nevertheless outstanding player, who never got nearly as much credit and recognition as he deserved.
Firkins is just an all around awesome player with a very unique sound. There is a live video on him on YT (Yamaha Guitars 1991) which is kickass playing from start to finish... some tasty sweep licks around the 21 min mark. Rain in the Tunnel still one of my favourite songs with an epic outro.
Been a MLF fan since the beginning, I just can't play his stuff because of how he uses his fingers. As soon as I saw the name I was like, oh man, give us that opening sequence to Rain in the Tunnel, which is really melodic and bendy. I used to make all my students learn it because it's a great practice/bending exercise that sounds fabulous too! Maybe do it on video 2 of MLF!
Dave, great lesson as usual. Could you do a lesson on the solo from Guitar Shop by Jeff Beck? That is one of my favorite solos of all time. Every time I hear it I have to rewind and listen to it 3 or 4 times. Like did that just happen? Just sick!
Nice vid. Firkins was THE guy that was willing to avoid the shred trend and establish himself as a unique player.
Great observation great point 🤘🤘✌️🖖
I first heard Michael Lee Firkins Laughing stacks on a floppy 45 rpm record. It blew my mind how different it sounded to other guitarists. Legend!
The most underrated "shredder" ever imo
R.I.P.

Saw him at the Marquee in London back in the 90s. Absolutely blew me away. Should have been a major player.
Oh man, I don't even try to play this hot stuff, no way. But it is a nice video to see, thank you Dave

Last example is a fantastic scale exercise
Excellent. Watching your right thumb technique during the fast passages is inspiring, Dave. 🤘🏻
Wow I knew I couldn't be the only one that notices that I love it, looks like it is made of a more flexible material than mine lol
Cool licks Dave.
Awesome

Ace lesson.

Dude you should do 3 Marshall Harrison licks you'll never play. That'd be fun. MLF rocks his own way.
Please Do a Video of Vito Bratta Licks from White Lion. He' such a Good Guitar Player in my Opinion
