(Comes in dressed as Crow T. Robot) ...oops, wrong review show ^^; I actually saw Sombra as more Trixie-like than Discord... except that unlike Trixie he actually HAS THE SKILLS!!! Yeah, he queens it up, but he gets results ^^

Regarding Equestria being a monarchy, yes it is common for the rulers to remain as such until their death, that does not mean that kings or queens have not abdicated their thrones in the past. That is essentially how I view Luna and Celestia retiring.

I don’t think characters automatically needs backstory or complex motivations (not that MLP villains usually have those) to be good characters, even if those things are nice.
And there are monarchs who have retired and expecially since Celestia is immortal it would be unfair for her not to be able to retire.

    • @tayojones9460

True. I mean, what does he want from Cosy? A tragic backstory that made her into the power hungry sociopath we know today? It is MLP. St this point, you should what you can get

Yeah. I think his comment about monarchy just displays a certain level of ignorance about the concept. Traditionally monarchs reign until death but there are plenty of examples where they step down voluntarily for various reasons (not to mention the many more times they do so involuntarily).

Sara Samaletdin I agree. The reason why I love Cozy Glow so much is because of her performance. She was able to get enough screen time for me to fall in love with her cute side and her awesome evil side for me to consider her my favorite villain of the show. Before she came around I had a hard time picking a favorite villain and just with school Raze alone I was able to make her my official favorite.

Hey, Thespio, in a monarchy, the ruling monarch can abdicate the throne and pass it on to another. I think that is probably what the princesses here are doing.

2:32 For the record, Sombra was a phantom restoring his power all throughout the Season 3 premiere. At the beginning of this two-parter, he’s fully restored to a supposedly mortal form.
There _would_ be a difference in vocal projection.

    • @DaWillstanator
      @DaWillstanator 5 років тому +3

I dunno, last I checked Sombra did materialize into his full bodied mortal form near the end of the Season 3 premiere when Spike was trying to take the Crystal Heart to Cadence and his voice was STILL deep and gravely, even with how little he spoke. Plus for this premiere he had a completely different voice actor. So I sadly can't agree with that.

  • @igetboredproductions

Sombra DID die in the season 3 premier. The writers themselves have stated in the past that he was dead.
Grogar brought him back through necromancy. "You will be sent back to the darkness from which you were summoned." Is just a TV-Y7 way of bringing up death.
Rarity referred to him as "dispelled into the aether." The aether is basically referring to the far reaches of the sky.
Right before Sombra appeared there was an off screen character drawing very Satanic looking marks on the ground, which crystals then popped out from and Sombra appeared. That was Grogar bringing him back from the dead.
Lots of reactors and reviewers keep talking about how, "Oh, I thought he was dead, but guess he wasn't." It's annoying me. Probably a hell of a lot more than it should, but it's annoying me.

The comics have never been canon. At best they're a B canon- they can be accepted as canon up until the point where they conflict with the show, and the show supersedes them.

Believe it or not I was actually super happy to see Celestia finally retiring and stepping down from Throne to have someone more competent in charge; as well as shocked as Discord was to hear it wasn't happening soon after King Sombra's attack. True that King Sombra voice doesn't match his overall character but that was mostly the fault of the fans laughing at his dialogue and failure from the season 3 premiere that made King Sombra have more dialogue with a different voice. But still he was a Great Joy to watch and he is still my favorite mlp villain all the way from season 3 to this day, and I was overjoyed to see that I wish list of him returning was fulfilled! Coming back with his cutting strategy (being the smartest villain in my opinion) by deceiving & Terrorizing the main cast and permanently destroying the ultimate weapons of Equestria before be killed an epic showdown, honoring King Sombra's Legacy as the True Villain of MLP!

A king can sometime abdicate actually, depending on the system that is used, I wouldn't . While I though they put a lot of though in how Sombra could could actually outsmart the M6 and managed to momentarily hold Ponyville and Canterlot under his rule, it sort of felt they had to follow the by number to make them deal with Sombra alone like having Luna, Celestia dealing and , big shock, Starswirl with holding the forest back while the M6 went over to deal with him.
I was also surprised that Sombra actually dominated the minds of so many ponies, it make me wonder how vulnerable ponies are from that and how the Princess reach defeated him the first time around with some any meat shields.
I did actually like that the Everfree forest is now running wild again, as I though it was a cool plot device, which had been neutered sense Season 4, which disappointed me a lot.
I doubt that the Tree of Harmony is actually completely destroyed as Twilight's castle was an extension of it.

This was a great way to start the last season off with a League of Super Evil (Im calling them that and its a reference to a old show), Sombra being a boss, Twilight and her friends preparing for the series finale when they become the rulers of Equestria, 'Twilighting' in its purest form, Grogar easily calling the shots and assembling his crew, and everything else in between. I can understand where Thespio was coming from with his complants, but I didnt see them as too bad of a detraction from the episode . It was kinda bad to see Sombra win so easily and conquer the Crystal Empire and almost get Equestria, but his ACTUAL DEATH was kinda cool to see and Discords speech and surprise to see Celestia NOT make Twilight and friends the rulers was amusing to see. To me, this is a clear HOOVES UP and I cant wait what else these writers and actors/actresses have for us

Sweet Celestia, Sombra's voice was my pet peeve of the premiere! I hated it! If it had just been deeper and more booming, it would've matched his confidence and given him some charisma! That one little fix could've saved it! They wouldn't have had to even hire a new actor, all they needed was to deepen it and add a reverb!

  • @Zodia195

This premiere is now my 2nd fav (S5 Premiere is still my fav though out of the premieres). The conclusion I could see coming a mile away because it's a common cliche in anime, but it's a cliche I still enjoy. Yeah I was expecting more of a reaction from Twilight's friends since a chunk of them have their own lives after all. I hope the writers do address this throughout the season.
However, one of Lauren Faust's wishes was for Twilight to take over from Celestia, so I am glad the staff is fufilling her last wish since the others were addressed.
FYI, Big Jim was the original voice of Sombra, but he said since they needed an actual VA for Sombra this time, it's why he didn't voice him.

  • @JoeHabana

The princesses do nothing as rainbow dash said, but she also said that it makes sense because it was training for Twilight to take the thrive in the future.
There is also in the comics were Celestia tells spoke that she could have easily take care of some of the things that Twilight did but choose not to in order to train Twilight... I'm paraphrasing.
Also, remember the season 5 finale where there is atimeline with King Sombra ay war with Celestia and this war has been going for years. King Sombra took control of the Crystal empire, ponyville and Canterlot in a single day.
That timeline shows how badass Celestia truly is

anyone else think that Tia & Lulu's decision to just, retire and drop everything on Twilight is a d**k move. seriously running a kingdom isn't something one simply, drops in your lap.
    *No you need to:
    *
.know the ins & outs of high-profile figure heads & noble society's.
.have a firm grasp of the regions laws, and able to enforce those laws.
.insure that the economic of the kingdom remains stable.
and so many more variables. and all of those variables takes YEARS to learn, or even get down pat. so the fact that both Celestia & Luna are glossing over this, pretty says 'D**K Move' to me. and considering how Twilight over-thinks things, and has panic attacks when she's not prepared for most things. my points seems stronger.
also the fact that Twilight's friends are *REALLY*, and i mean *REALLY* down-play the significance of this revelation is just dumb. they are literally accepting the roles of a Royal Court, I.E advisers and deployments to the throne. and if you add this on top of their roles at the School, and their own lively hoods & general occupations.........these 5 mares will LITERALLY have no free time to do ANYTHING!!!!!!!!!!

it's unusual, but a monarch (or diarch in this case) can abdicate. It happened for Edward VIII in 1936 for example. Granted he had more drama around his quitting the throne, but, if you are immortal and have been doing the same thing for 1000+ years, it can get mind numbingly boring, and so, time for a change? Heck of a season start though, we will see where the story goes.

The funny thing is DWK did an excellent job describing cozy glows motivation in his interpretation of school raze.
She doesn’t have a tragic backstory.
There is no sad or tragic catalyst to her becoming evil anymore than there is one for Chrysalis.
She is, for all intensive and purposes. Just an evil evil little girl.
And I think that works for her. She doesn’t need some long backstory that happened 1000 years ago, if anything Teric as a villain from the past chrysalis as a villain from the present and cozy glow as a villain of those who would come after. Is the same basic prospect that twilight uses at the end of the series in her last speech before rainbow blasting the three.

the thing is... we've already had it established that the Elements are within the Mane 6, so they don't need the physical ones, a la Rainbow Rocks, so it's not like them having them inside them was all that big a shock to me.
If anything, regarding that I was on the same wavelength as Discord, wondering why it took Twilight so long to figure it out.
Even ignoring Rainbow Rocks, The Rainbow Power is a connection stronger than just the Elements on their own. Twilight and the others didn't NEED to remove the Elements thus needing to return them and unintentionally lead Sombra to the Tree in the first place! Am I the only one who remembers the Rainbow Power?! Have the writers, during the FINAL SEASON OF THE SHOW, forgotten that huge plot thread that was such a big deal in season 4?!

Putting the fact that his tragic comic arc was thrown out the window aside, I would've accepted Sombra's presence in this episode more if he was more in line with his S3 portrayal and not just a Tirek clone. The episode overall is okay, but Sombra (along with "Uprooted") is the reason that I'm not going back to this episode any time soon.

I don't think it's actually been confirmed that Equestria is a monarchy. In fact, it's confirmed NOT to be one if you take into consideration that since there are two rulers, it's a diarchy. And then there's Cadance and the Crystal Empire, making it a triarchy? Nevermind, it's best if I don't digress into that rabbit hole. Anyway, if the leaders can be switched out before death, then it's technically not an archy. Since leaders aren't voted in, it's not a democracy... You know, maybe we should just assume Equestria has its own government system rather than to assume it has a human government.

I understand where Thespio is coming from with Cozy Glow but I personally love her and she’s my favorite villain. While Cozy has a pretty vague backstory about where she came from or what her motivation is she gave such a great performance that she could be likable and a good character without knowing her backstory. I loved Cozy’s adorable side before school raze because I tend to like characters like that. School Raze just made me love her even more by making her a bada**. She’s a little filly around the same age as the CMC and she was able to flesh out a world threatening plan all on her own. And that’s what makes her so awesome for me. Also I have 2 possibilities that could tie up the loose ends of her plans that were left out. The first one is that without magic she could use this opportunity as a chance to manipulate equestria while they’re vulnerable. Another reason is she wanted to get rid of all the magic so no one could fight back against her if they tried. And Cozy planning ahead means that she’s actually pretty smart. I love Cozy Glow. 💙💖

To give my 2 cents, I thought the premier was....Okay. Everything with Twilight taking on the new responsibility was excellent. Discord was great. The new Legion of Doom was fantastic. All that was great. But one thing kills any and all re-watch-ability for me, and that's King Sombra. I never liked Sombra as a character and this just dug the rabbit hole deeper. He is (imo) the most boring villain in all of FIM compared to Chrysalis and Tirek. Combine that with the fact that I generally don't like Mind Control plots (they're one of my least favorite tropes in fiction) and it just seals the deal of only watching the first and last 5 minutes of the episode. I at least hope they do something with the aftermath and show everyone else genuinely experiencing trauma after essentially being mind raped and nearly killing the main 6 later on (considering unlike the MC plot itself, I LOVE seeing the aftermath of people going through traumatic events and finding out how to they recover from it), but considering it's a kids show, I doubt that. I am excited for the rest of the season, but I am GLAD that Sombra is finally dead.
    Also Discord is best troll.
