  • Images of devastated coral reefs, a common reminder of climate change, can give the impression of a static landscape. But time-lapse footage of coral bleaching as it happens shows a surprisingly active process. This video, taken by scientists in a laboratory at Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia, captures a coral ejecting its resident population of algae. The behavior helps corals survive warmer water in the short term, but extended periods of bleaching can be lethal to corals and the ecosystems they support.

      Yet bleached coral reefs are being replanted with fresh coral and the new growth is thriving. Also, why are corals not colonising areas that were previously too cold for them? Or are they, but these new colonies are being ignored in the name of political correctness, which is in reality incorrectness because a small number of people are making $billions.
      BTW check out the disposal of wind turbine blades that are unrecyclable, so are buried to last for eternity because they do not corrode, rot or otherwise break down.
      Focusing solely on global warming is highly dangerous because some other reason for environmental degradation is being overlooked.
      Coral bleaching is just as likely to be caused by plastic nano- and micro- particles that are known to infest mussel colonies for example.

      Heartland Institute recently posted stats for ocean temperature rises to be only 1 oC in the last 200 years, most of which is in the last 70 years of industrialisation, I think we can deal with these small increases without pushing the doomsday narratives.
      They also pointed out how coral globally has been actually increasing in recent years to levels much higher than previous.
      This video clip is click bait misinformation as this is actually the spawning process of coral giving new life.

    I didn't know what it meant when a coral ''bleaches'', so I watched the video unknowingly what this process was. I got the feeling it was sick, like it was coughing and clinging to life, but I was optimistic and hoped it meant something else. Then I looked it up and it made me very sad, the immature people in the comments disgust me.

    I wonder how many times this happened over the course of geological time? During the Permian mass extinction of volcanism, and the extreme levels of CO2. What allowed corals to survive climate change then?

    • @akeem2983
      @akeem2983 9 місяців тому +2

      I think that even in the most devastating scenarious of climate change coral won't go extinct entirely. There will be a lot of damage to their population and a lot of its varieties will go extinct, probably they'll need tens if not hundreds of thousands of years to build new reefs and their disappearance for such a long time will have a great impact on many species including humans. But I think that it won't be the greatest challenge that corals faced through their long history.
      And about permian, at this time corals were pretty different compared to modern ones. Nowadays many varieties of coral have symbiosis with algae that povides food to coral via potosynthesis. But when conditions for coral aren't right, algae may start producing harmful compounds, so in order to protect themselves corals can temporarily get rid of the algae in this very process of bleaching. It's dangerous for coral because if bleached for too long, coral may starve, but ability to bleach may save coral's life if conditions will be harmful only for a short period of time, since it could reabsorb healthy algae and reverse its bleaching. Symbiosis of coral and algae became a thing only in triassic, before it all corals lacked both algae and the process of bleaching, instead they were eating plankton, algae, worms and even fish in order to get all of the necessary energy (modern corals eat too, but for them it's not the main source of energy)

    Coral bleaching is like a relationship with a bad break up. Coral and zooantellea is having some stress thats affecting their relationship and its becouse of us, global warming, ocean acidification, pollution and human activities.
    Zooxantelae becomes toxic and corals kicks them out, but they'll starve as 90% of the corals food is produced by the symbionts

      Theres a bunch of reason for a coral to expel its symbiotic algae, one main reason of this is the temperature rising, 90 degrees and above will kill the algae, in the reef aquarium hobby its usually bad parameters like ph and alk also mag, and well bad lighting as algae uses light for photosynthesis.

    Coral is symbiotic with algae called zooxanthellae that live in tissues and give color to coral. When this algae are released, coral bleaching occurs, and the nutrients to coral reefs are interrupted because algae provide 90% of the energy needed for coral. Factors that induce coral bleaching include oxygen deficiency and salt change due to an increase in animal plankton. as a result of overfishing of fish with an increase in water temperature or a decrease in water temperature.

      +Mr N The coral is expelling algae that normally resides in them and give them nutrients and their vibrant color. After this unfortunate process corals turn white due to the absence of algae and that's why this is called "coral bleaching". Coral bleaching is happening all over the world due to increase in ocean temperature i.e. global warming. If the temperature doesn't decrease back soon enough the corals die. So many corals have died already.

      +Stephanie it actually makes sense though if you think about it. Why would a large volume of algae release be beneficial as a reaction? It could be the algae is liberated to grow in matt form, that would blank the sun out and thereby cool the waters. Trouble is, that strategy has not worked, the result being the coral dies.
