Genius!!! 50 years agao I played with a quartet in the Paris Club "Keur Samba". Sonny Rollins walked in as a client. I told the piano player, I am not feeling well please continue to play in trio :-)
Saw him about this same time, early 80's, in Pt. Townsend, WA. When he walked out on stage, some woman yelled out, "We love you, Sonny!" and we all cheered, and it was ON! Got our money's worth that day, and then some. Sonny is truly one of a kind, and gift to the world.
I have been lucky to see Sonny twice. Here ever playful, I love his quoting and always inventive and always his own man. One of the great Jazz geniuses still with us.
Right around this time he played a concert at Wesleyan University with Pat Metheny on guitar. I was a student at Wesleyan at the time, but was in another city that weekend and missed the concert. Bummer.
He's definitely a brilliant saxophone player! One of my favorites! Some people underestimate The Colossus, he's definitely one of the best (saxophone) players that have ever played. I love his musical jokes. Got some good laughs out of his "pop goes the weasel" quotes. :D
the saxophone is the most beautiful instrument it's the voice for those who cant sing. its something that you can speak into. it amplifies your soul and when you blow into it, it seams as if you are connected to it. and when you know your instrument and play from the heart there are no mess-ups. for me every key can represents a hardship and can also represent an accomplishment. and even though I'm young, when i play from the heart i escape from the world and all its problems and sometimes i find myself crying and never wanting to let go of that feeling of true complete undeniable freedom and innocents and prosperity. "it's my high." and truly, it's my life. besides my faith this what i live for. I'm kenneth king
All that breathing and diaphragm strength and support has kept Sonny strong and contributed to his longevity, wouldn't you think? It's especially nice to see a guy with his chops honor the melody and not use this gorgeous melody as a platform to jump from and do lots of self-indulgent riffing and showing off. It's a nice humble gesture and very sincere and endearing. Kids, now, don't seem to have much awareness of great instrumentalists. They're really missing something. Thanks for this!
me pregunto que se sentira ser el, haber vivido con los GRANDES y haberlos sobrevivido a todos.. recordar que en algun momento estuviste tocando con bird con coltrane... debe ser tan loco
Thanks for this video. Roillins has a great sound. A big tone, with the solid backbone to stand like a rock and the flexibility to talk like a preacherman. But I've heard him playing more inspired, more inventive or fancy as he plays on this video; but that's ok - everything changes a bit from day to day ...
Wow...daniellerose7, If you don't appreciate Rollins man you have a problem. You are not a true jazz player then. As jazz players we listen to other players and how they express themselves, Rollins has so many wonderful ideas that he plays. Oh...I have yet to see an Eric Alexander composition in a fake book by the way.
sorry i pressed on the wrong key..i wanted to give you thumbs up..and no it went the other way..so this is definitely a mistake...!!!!! i am a fiddle player...and yeah working out all scales in all keys is a lot of work but it is worth it if you wanne go anywhere serious in music...great comment!!!
Uh.... like, who the f-ck is "Coleman Hawkins"? Is he one of those old guys from the 20's? Eric Alexendner is SO cool and can do anything! I heard him play scales in ALL 12 KEYS! He rules!
I'm sorry, but scales are not beautiful. People can teach themselves scales, but very few can create the magnificent beauty that this melodic magician produces. That is what counts. I understand that you want to learn from such a genius though, just like i do to.
Whoever you are if you are comparing Kenny G with Sonny Rollins, you must check yourself in Psychiatric department. Good Luck, you get torazine 100ml/IM.
hahaha..sonny rollins is ok...?,,,needs to post vids?...and about scales?..WDF!¿! ..do u know who you are talkin about?.. for sure you don't know...God please.. apologise this man. xD
I'm a bass player. I can play all the scales in all the keys. That my friend is no great accomplishment! Any respectable musician should be able to do that. How old are you, 12?
Sonny Rollins, You Are My Number One Hero
Sonny is the true spirit of Joy..this period the 1980's, his power, his energy his voice is so full, clean and awesome. Long live Sonny Rollins

I was there as well. fantastic!
Saw him live in the City. Nothing but the best...
Genius!!! 50 years agao I played with a quartet in the Paris Club "Keur Samba". Sonny Rollins walked in as a client. I told the piano player, I am not feeling well please continue to play in trio :-)
You Put The "A" In Awesome, Sonny Rollins

After 30 years, exactly to the same day (October 31, 2012), he's goin back to Prague. I can't wait for the concert!! :-)
The awesome thing about jazz is that everybody has their own interpretation, and there is not a wrong one, just more people value certain styles

A master of his trade!

@doddsalfa There is so much emotional intensity... It is amazing, as Sonny always is. You just have to learn what to listen for.

@JazzVideoGuy
he's coming to delight us in Boston
Wow! I'm not a sax fan but Sonny's playing is awsome.
