Sonny is the true spirit of Joy..this period the 1980's, his power, his energy his voice is so full, clean and awesome. Long live Sonny Rollins
Sonny Rollins, You Are My Number One Hero
Sonny Rollins is the oldest man in the world, at least 1.5 million years old. And thankfully, he ain't died yet.
GO, SONNY ROLLINS, GO !
Saw him about this same time, early 80's, in Pt. Townsend, WA. When he walked out on stage, some woman yelled out, "We love you, Sonny!" and we all cheered, and it was ON! Got our money's worth that day, and then some. Sonny is truly one of a kind, and gift to the world.
Genius!!! 50 years agao I played with a quartet in the Paris Club "Keur Samba". Sonny Rollins walked in as a client. I told the piano player, I am not feeling well please continue to play in trio :-)
You Put The "A" In Awesome, Sonny Rollins
for sure
I was born in 1982 so I couldn´t make it.. but I did on 31th of October 2012.. what a splendid evening !! Sonny is a real Hero !
I was there. Sonny Rollins brought freedom, beauty and endless power to Prague.
And he did the same in 2012 after 30 years!!! Thank you.
...and he turned 90 today. Ain't we fortunate to still have this Jazz Giant💖🎷🎀
I was there as well. fantastic!
I have been lucky to see Sonny twice. Here ever playful, I love his quoting and always inventive and always his own man. One of the great Jazz geniuses still with us.
There's literally a tear rolling off my face, someone gotta be cutting onions in the library right now.
Sonny Rollins Rules !
When Sonny plays, Sonny really plays.
its wonderful to hear sonny's soul .
Awesome song and an excellent musician. One of the greats!
A True genius at work..it is totally inspiring..Well done Sonny
He's definitely a brilliant saxophone player! One of my favorites! Some people underestimate The Colossus, he's definitely one of the best (saxophone) players that have ever played.
I love his musical jokes. Got some good laughs out of his "pop goes the weasel" quotes. :D
After 30 years, exactly to the same day (October 31, 2012), he's goin back to Prague. I can't wait for the concert!! :-)
Right around this time he played a concert at Wesleyan University with Pat Metheny on guitar. I was a student at Wesleyan at the time, but was in another city that weekend and missed the concert. Bummer.
The awesome thing about jazz is that everybody has their own interpretation, and there is not a wrong one, just more people value certain styles
eric alexander kicks this guys ass! he was my teacher at jazz camp and nobody can play as well as him!
Wonderful art, thank you Mr. Rollins.
All about Sonny Rollins is important! Wonderful clip.
A master of his trade!
You can almost hear a voice comin outta that sax! So expresive.
♫♥♫♥ I love Sonny Rollins ♫♥♫♥
♥ Loving This Music ♥
All that breathing and diaphragm strength and support has kept Sonny strong and contributed to his longevity, wouldn't you think?
It's especially nice to see a guy with his chops honor the melody and not use this gorgeous melody as a platform to jump from and do lots of self-indulgent riffing and showing off. It's a nice humble gesture and very sincere and endearing.
Kids, now, don't seem to have much awareness of great instrumentalists. They're really missing something. Thanks for this!
I've never seen a hat like that suit someone so well.
LOL, when I hear something this good, all I can do is laugh! Thanks for posting
A true giant of jazz..
love him!
JazzVideoGuy, You just come up with them again and again. Thank You :-)
The last of jazz Titans!
that cadenza was just other-worldly.
The best!
Wow! I'm not a sax fan but Sonny's playing is awsome.
Smokey indeed x
Got to see this guy at the Cerritos PAC back in 06! A True Sax Colossus!
me pregunto que se sentira ser el, haber vivido con los GRANDES y haberlos sobrevivido a todos.. recordar que en algun momento estuviste tocando con bird con coltrane... debe ser tan loco
It was a great show
no he is alive and well, was born in 1930, and in 2007 i first saw him in london, then in 2009 in london i met him after the concert.
Thanks JazzVideoGuy, this is great!
il passe en france au mois de juillet ,au festival country de mirande ,dans le gers , j;irai le voir !
B-E-A-U-TIFUL!
Thanks for posting, Jazz Video Guy🙏
JODER
so good!
the saxophone is the most beautiful instrument it's the voice for those who cant sing. its something that you can speak into. it amplifies your soul and when you blow into it, it seams as if you are connected to it. and when you know your instrument and play from the heart there are no mess-ups. for me every key can represents a hardship and can also represent an accomplishment. and even though I'm young, when i play from the heart i escape from the world and all its problems and sometimes i find myself crying and never wanting to let go of that feeling of true complete undeniable freedom and innocents and prosperity. "it's my high." and truly, it's my life. besides my faith this what i live for.
I'm kenneth king
Happy Belated Birthday Mr. Rollins! (He just turned 79 this past Monday)..
@doddsalfa There is so much emotional intensity... It is amazing, as Sonny always is. You just have to learn what to listen for.
Sonny Rollins is at least a million and is older than me. I am only a 900 thousand years old.
Very cool :) Thanks for sending Sharone !!XX
Thanks for this video.
Roillins has a great sound. A big tone, with the solid backbone to stand like a rock and the flexibility to talk like a preacherman.
But I've heard him playing more inspired, more inventive or fancy as he plays on this video; but that's ok - everything changes a bit from day to day ...

stay safe
@JazzVideoGuy
he's coming to delight us in Boston
The Song is Smoke Gets In Your Eyes by Jerome Kern.
"Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" From "Roberta" by Jerome Kern and Otto Harbach.

El tema es SMOKE GETS IN YOUR EYES
He kind of reminds me of a robot when he moves, but his playing is still amazing...:)
Wow...daniellerose7, If you don't appreciate Rollins man you have a problem. You are not a true jazz player then. As jazz players we listen to other players and how they express themselves, Rollins has so many wonderful ideas that he plays. Oh...I have yet to see an Eric Alexander composition in a fake book by the way.
sorry i pressed on the wrong key..i wanted to give you thumbs up..and no it went the other way..so this is definitely a mistake...!!!!!
i am a fiddle player...and yeah working out all scales in all keys is a lot of work but it is worth it if you wanne go anywhere serious in music...great comment!!!
Sonny is the best, but i have heard him better.
He's also simultaneously and at the same time also the youngest man in the world too. Howds he do dat? He"s Sonny Rollins dude.
Uh.... like, who the f-ck is "Coleman Hawkins"? Is he one of those old guys from the 20's? Eric Alexendner is SO cool and can do anything! I heard him play scales in ALL 12 KEYS! He rules!
¿ How is your daily, be here now, inspiration ?
I'm sorry, but scales are not beautiful. People can teach themselves scales, but very few can create the magnificent beauty that this melodic magician produces. That is what counts. I understand that you want to learn from such a genius though, just like i do to.
Think he was wearing this same hat, too.
What is the name of this piece
@atks22 Smoke Gets in Your Eyes
copyright 1933
I don't know the brand, but it comes in white powder.
Whoever you are if you are comparing Kenny G with Sonny Rollins, you must check yourself in Psychiatric department.

How old are YOU?! How old is Sonny Rollins, like a milion? Is he died?
why is he shy!....!
WTF! 3 dislikes... people!! you really don't know anything about music!
I'm a bass player. I can play all the scales in all the keys. That my friend is no great accomplishment! Any respectable musician should be able to do that. How old are you, 12?
hahaha..sonny rollins is ok...?,,,needs to post vids?...and about scales?..WDF!¿! ..do u know who you are talkin about?.. for sure you don't know...God please.. apologise this man. xD
sonny a toujours du mal a finir ses chorus hors partition toujours les memes phrases cle a t il passe le bridge ???
This is a joke, right?
What's no good about this?
sonny's band is doing nothing for him...guitarist especially...eek..
Love Sonny, but this is no good.
