The goal was clearly stated in the ep where they visited eisen. Before stark was even introduced. That way she can talk to himmel one last time. Knowing what she knows now. Possibly also flamme. They are almost going to all the same spots as frieren original journey. And the trials is the main hiccup so far. As before there was no such restriction.
I thought the goal is pretty clearly stated no? They want to reach Heaven and talk with Himmel a last time. The Mage exam was because they needed a class 1 ( or what it was) mage to be able to continue the path they were on
The goal is reach Heaven and to talk with Himmel. It just isn't the main focus of the story. The story focuses on the characters growth and understanding as they journey rather than the main goal.
There's more brewing in the background but thats just the cherry on top.

ummm.... The goal is to reach Heaven and to meet with the people they have lost. Heaven is located beyond where they killed the Demon King and so they are taking to same path/journey that Frieren went on with her original party

日本人にしか分からないことだけどさ、日本のアニメが海外ではマネできない理由が分かったよ、フリーレンを見て気付いたんだけど、日本のアニメには「ボケとツッコミ」があるね、海外のアニメにも「ツッコミ」に似た様なものはあるけど上手くない様に思える、、日本人はお笑いが好きだから原作者達もそれを見て育っていると思う、だから皆に「ボケ」のクオリティが解る様に「ツッコミ」を入れることが出来るんだと思った。アニメの良さは他にも沢山あるけど「お笑い」の要素は重要な役割を果たしているんだろうな、、と感じました。
