The BlackWoods and Brackens are actually more powerful than The Tullys. The Tyrell's are similar to the Tully's Aegon probably made them Lord Paramount's to prevent rebellion and keep the more powerful and older houses like the HighTower's, Tarly's in Check.

This is when Game Of Thrones and House Of The Dragon are at their best and most addictive for me, not from movie quality fight scenes, but from plans being made, from alliances being forged or broken, from the pieces being moved on the game board.
just wish the writing was better and made alot of the characters more clever and witty. So many scenes are entirely written for all characters to be brooding and serious. GoT writing in S1-4 had so much clever and witty lines inbetween the brooding that made multiple episodes of all dialogue completely digestible and entertaining . i'm not talking about marvel quips either, just George's writing for truly fleshing characters out. GoT was heavily about characters trying to outplay and outwit eachother, while HoTD relies far to much on all the characters constantly making mistakes and then brooding ad nauseum about it

Allot of people criticising hotd for being slow character not being as interesting. I kinda agree in a way, but i think not only are the characters more realistic relatable, but the conflicts arn’t as exaggerated, in game of thrones in some ways feels like watching hells kitchen. Someone does something then gordon absolutely shits on them and fires them, in hotd, people get upset tensions rise but people also don’t fuck themselves over and then get lucky, not saying its better than got but the believability is refreshing. Everyones not completely bloodthirsty all the time or completely fucks something up for the sake of plot. And everyone don’t conveniently have every piece of info available to them unless it makes sense. Allot of people in got felt like they had super powers they way they manuvered and knew everything. Felt like the whole plot was basicly the good guys loose all the time untill they are so rock bottom, then a small reprieve them fucked over again. Which is all good from a drama perspective and entertainment, but i like that hotd didn’t go as far in that direction.

I love the character development they are doing with Alicent. The realisation that Aemond definitely had something to do with Aegon’s injuries, and that she is slowly losing all control over the realm. Slowly realising her say in the council is useless at this point, and she’s just a pawn that can’t stop the atrocities that are sure to come with Aemond as ruler.
I was okay with this being a slower character-centered episode. I think after the events of the last episode, we needed to pause and look at these characters for a bit and watch the ripples of events move over them.

Not exactly, it’s a similar situation to aegons, but worse because if she’s incapacitated daemon or one of her bastard sons takes control, or her council. She is really the main figurehead, so she is very much held back from fighting. That’s why the scene with the white worm and that relationship is super important

I think this season is terrible. I agree with your sentiments. I’m showing my daughter game of thrones for the first time. We are at that scene where the two boys on the Lannister side in war thought they heard something and one of them farts teasing the other. Then Rob’s wolf jumps out and attacks them. Then they cut to rob on his horse in the dark. Then cut to the morning after the battle with bleeding soldiers and the girl he married cutting off someone’s calve or foot. It was a great transition! The Mentioned this because HOD attempted the same battle transition but did it soooo wrong. I was like all those bodies We didn’t even know who those people were. It didn’t even look like a real battle scene. Speaking of real. Speaking of real, The scenes of regular people seem like an entirely different show. I’m bored out of my mind and don’t understand how people who loved the original can give this mediocre show praise. The first season was much better but it was no Game of Thrones.

I think Alex's criticisms of this episode are dead on. It's not that we need dragon action all the time, it's just that the political intrigue is not as intresting as in GOT or even previous Hot D episodes.
This show is better than most but it is not even close to how good the first episodes of GoT was, everyone played GoT in GoT, nobody was just doing nothing for very long, untill the directors had to make up their own boring storyline.. Re: Alex's comment about Tywin, Tyrion and Littlefinger being suppior. We met those characters 20 years after the mad king died when the Realm had been at the height of corruption for years , Those characters had been playing the game for over 20 years well into their journeys. Larys, Alicent etc are at the comparative beginning of their journeys coning from Peacetime. Its like we're seeing the making of Littlefinger, Cersei etc. Fascinating.
That doesn't explain why they constantly make idiotic decisions. These characters are just not intelligent. Tyrion had literally zero experience being in charge of anything (other than sewage) and was amazing because he's intelligent and intelligently written.
I agree with Alex - House of Dragons is good, but it feels like "Game of Thrones Lite" in the sense that NONE of the characters are even close to the tier of characters from the original series (such as Tyrion, Littlefinger, Tywin, Jon Snow, etc)
He’s the type of critic that’s looking for stuff to criticize. Nobody is looking for anyone to give this show shining reviews and not say a single bad thing about the show, there are valid criticisms but when a reviewer is constantly looking for the gripes and shortcomings it makes it seem like they just have nothing much to say in terms of an actual critique.

I'm with Alex on this. This episode was middling at best. Great acting and what not: the writing on the other hand leaves much to be desired. Lots of time with not much happening. And three episodes now of both Rhaenyra and Daemon on repeat of the same tired nightmares, we get it, Daemon is in a weird headspace, and Rhaenyra doing not much of anything.
I think it's 8 episodes because of the end point... they don't want to change the books and it's the right decision. So we could get 12 episodes for season 3 for example. Anyway, we can't complain of the pause between seasons when we get CGI battles like this on a streaming show.
There are long 8 episodes, 1h each because they figured out they cannot wait 2 years between seasons because the viewership drops significantly. Cutting the episode counts helps them to deliver the season annually.
I wasn’t expecting this episode to be a big mover in any regard tbh and I think it’s fine. Assumed it would mostly be wound licking and retrospective views of the first major conflict.
GOT had entire seasons where nothing substantial happened. Just more and more minor characters were introduced without any progress on the major arcs. And major characters off doing stuff that ultimately had no relevance to the end. Rewatching GOT now, and there are a lot of brutally boring episodes. The only thing that has me a bit bored now is the Daemon-Witch-Harranhal stuff which I admit is a bit aimless at this point.
To be fair, GOT involved many Houses. Covered Westeros and surrounding continents. HOTD is specific to House Targaryen. How the dragons fell. Disappeared from the land (and sky) scape.
You can't judge slower episodes in isolation. They're building towards something. A proper foundation must be established to give the big episodes greater impact.
I agree with Alex there is a lack of intrigue and suspense with political manuevering but i think thatll changes as it gets further to the end of the season.
My problem with this season is it’s meandering. They giving us 8 episodes instead of 10. Which wouldn’t be as bad if they used it for a more battle centered season. But we’ve only had 1 battle. So why did we only get 8 episodes? Give us 10 or more episodes if you not gonna be blowing money on huge set pieces and battles. That’s my only problem
@@Jebu911 my question is, what are the spending 20 million on per episode? sure you have to spend money every episode. that cant be avoided. but if you don't need to waste money on too much cgi, and when you do have cgi it's nothing to extravagant since there isnt that much going on. whats that 20 mill going to? i think its more they had 200 million and people just averaged it to it being 20 million they used on each episode. although that would actually be 25 per episode, but whatever. i would guess this episode didnt cost 20 million. but i don't have receipts to see what studios be wasting their budget on.

The Dance of Dragons isn’t all battles, and at this point in time Rhaenyra doesn’t even have an army so we’re not gonna get any of the huge battles until season 3 or later. Game of Thrones wasn’t battle heavy either until the later seasons when the writers ran out of books

I’m slightly concerned Jace only mentioned Vermithor & Silverwing, they’ll probably use Seasmoke to but what about Sheepstealer, Greyghost and Cannibal. Also as for Alex saying most ppl suck at playing the game, Rhaenyra admits as much cause they all grew up In times of peace.
He mentioned that Vermithor and Silver Wing are the biggest they have. Cannibal is supposed to be around Vermithors size but Cannibal doesn't do anything during the war and never got involved so maybe they don't want to mention him. Maybe we'll see him a bit but that's it.
I think he only mentions those two because they are currently right beneath them in the caves at dragonstone while the others are nesting/whatever they do in the wilds nearby.
They should do a high budget HBO Miniseries about Aegon the Conquerer. They can even add in the creation of the dragons, The Doom of Valyria, Aegon's dream of A song of Ice and Fire and all the way to the last fight against Dorne. A Miniseries though, none of this stretching out the material. We want war and fights.
As you mentioned about being interested in the characters compared to GoT, I realized there's not a lot of stand out characters in HotD. (To me at least). GoT did very well in making even side characters enjoyable to watch.

This feels like a better thought out last season of Game of Thrones, we're just moving at such a fast speed that we really dont have time for "down" episodes. I mean Aegon was King for like a week it feels like but long enough for those Rat Catchers to decompose down to Skeletons lol. Im enjoying the show but wish we had time for things to breath more. Thats what made Game of Thrones so good early on.
From a casual perspective.... It's 1/3rd over. Part 1 was that battle we saw in previous episode. Part 2 Daemon V Aemon (both die along with their dragons) Part 3 Dragon Pit Massacre (remaining dragons slain) From a casual perspective those are the big events within Dance of Dragons.

I am kinda over daemons harrenhal adventures. I feel like he's being torn down so that the audience turns against him since he was a season one favorite, just so he can do some crazy redemption arc stuff later. Just my theory, no book spoilers please.
Daemon is not being sidelinded because he was popular but because they want to make this season Aegon and Aemonds. Which sets up for later when Aemond and Daemon have their interactions.
Daemon is getting character development. Facing his decisions and how his actions hurt the people he loves and cares about and how his quest for power just hurts everyone around him. He's not being torn down because people like him, he's being torn down because he's being haunted by the ghosts of his decisions.
Alex summed up the way I thought about the episode. GRRM should split the book into novellas. Kind of like tv seasons only with a large book being split up.
He probably hasn't so he can go back an change things if he writes himself into a corner, which I think has been happening alot hence why it's taking so long. Endings are hard, especially when you've revealed the broad strokes in the TV adaptation and everyone fucking hated it.
Going back and rewatching season 1 and comparing it to what we have currently with season 2, this current season is dragging and has next to nothing happening every episode.
Maybe I wasn't paying attention but it seems like they just breezed on by the loss of Rhaenys and Meleys without a care. I expected that loss to be hard-hitting news for Rhaenrya and her counsel, with discussion on how to move forward. I dunno, I'd give this episode a 7, there were good elements but pacing is becoming a problem. I'm lost on Daemon's plot overall, some witch-maid is influencing him? They'll need to move that along quick given that the one lord saw her interacting with him. Maybe it'll all make more sense as the season comes to a close but I felt bored when the credits ran :(

Team Black, but I agree with you guys this time around. Rhaenyra thinks the only thing she can do is fight, even though Rhaenys was more battle-ready and had a dragon far greater and STILL got taken down. Jace and Baela did hold it down for me, and as much as I hate Team Green, Aemond is competent and fitting the villain role well. I'm also tired of the thing with Daemon and Harrenhall. I could not give two craps about Alys Rivers. Granted I like seeing him being haunted by his own bad decisions, the scenes are just weird and unnecessary. The mom thing? WTF?

The problem with all of Daemon's hallucinations is that when it came to the scene when he is being told off by the Brackens I couldn't tell if it was actually happening or not.
These guys are just criticizing the book now. "They took the hand plot from Jace and gave it to Rhaenyra for her to do something". So the show is doing better than the book then.
No the show is obsessed with Rhaenyra and Allicent as its leads and it needs to let the two of them go as they're ultimately just two characters in a much larger narrative.

I think the point of Rhaenyra these episodes is exactly that: she can't do nothing because of her gender. Is a well done and good commentary on the fact that war is made by man and those won't listen to a woman. Same happened to Alicent. Rhaenyra is frustrated and constantly blocked by the comments of her council and the acts of Daemon and others. These episode for me has some really good wrinting and scenes. Tension keeps going up and up. Good review, guys!
I have absolutely no idea what would prompt you to think they’ll “run out of time” to finish the major events of the dance. The only major thing I can think of is daemon taking harrenhal later than usual, even still they’re well on track.
I think they did a pretty good job of addressing Rhaenyra not doing anything. She's been upset that others have been doing things, while she sits in the castle. And in the newest episode, said that her father wanted her to be queen, but never taught her how to actually rule or be a leader during war.

Also they are t distracted with a blood feud unlike the Blackwoods and Brackens

The Tyrell's are similar to the Tully's Aegon probably made them Lord Paramount's to prevent rebellion and keep the more powerful and older houses like the HighTower's, Tarly's in Check.

The North is bigger than of the other regions of Westeros but since resources are not as abundant like the Reach and the Riverlands its population isn’t as large as the other regions of Westeros.
This is when Game Of Thrones and House Of The Dragon are at their best and most addictive for me, not from movie quality fight scenes, but from plans being made, from alliances being forged or broken, from the pieces being moved on the game board.
just wish the writing was better and made alot of the characters more clever and witty. So many scenes are entirely written for all characters to be brooding and serious. GoT writing in S1-4 had so much clever and witty lines inbetween the brooding that made multiple episodes of all dialogue completely digestible and entertaining . i'm not talking about marvel quips either, just George's writing for truly fleshing characters out. GoT was heavily about characters trying to outplay and outwit eachother, while HoTD relies far to much on all the characters constantly making mistakes and then brooding ad nauseum about it

Allot of people criticising hotd for being slow character not being as interesting. I kinda agree in a way, but i think not only are the characters more realistic relatable, but the conflicts arn’t as exaggerated, in game of thrones in some ways feels like watching hells kitchen. Someone does something then gordon absolutely shits on them and fires them, in hotd, people get upset tensions rise but people also don’t fuck themselves over and then get lucky, not saying its better than got but the believability is refreshing. Everyones not completely bloodthirsty all the time or completely fucks something up for the sake of plot. And everyone don’t conveniently have every piece of info available to them unless it makes sense. Allot of people in got felt like they had super powers they way they manuvered and knew everything. Felt like the whole plot was basicly the good guys loose all the time untill they are so rock bottom, then a small reprieve them fucked over again.
Which is all good from a drama perspective and entertainment, but i like that hotd didn’t go as far in that direction.

I love the character development they are doing with Alicent. The realisation that Aemond definitely had something to do with Aegon’s injuries, and that she is slowly losing all control over the realm.
Slowly realising her say in the council is useless at this point, and she’s just a pawn that can’t stop the atrocities that are sure to come with Aemond as ruler.
They’ve been doing Alicent character development for the last 13 episodes
Couple this with her realization that she started all of this over a misunderstanding

I was okay with this being a slower character-centered episode. I think after the events of the last episode, we needed to pause and look at these characters for a bit and watch the ripples of events move over them.

She is really the main figurehead, so she is very much held back from fighting. That’s why the scene with the white worm and that relationship is super important

I think this season is terrible. I agree with your sentiments. I’m showing my daughter game of thrones for the first time. We are at that scene where the two boys on the Lannister side in war thought they heard something and one of them farts teasing the other. Then Rob’s wolf jumps out and attacks them. Then they cut to rob on his horse in the dark. Then cut to the morning after the battle with bleeding soldiers and the girl he married cutting off someone’s calve or foot. It was a great transition! The Mentioned this because HOD attempted the same battle transition but did it soooo wrong. I was like all those bodies We didn’t even know who those people were. It didn’t even look like a real battle scene. Speaking of real. Speaking of real, The scenes of regular people seem like an entirely different show. I’m bored out of my mind and don’t understand how people who loved the original can give this mediocre show praise. The first season was much better but it was no Game of Thrones.

I think Alex's criticisms of this episode are dead on. It's not that we need dragon action all the time, it's just that the political intrigue is not as intresting as in GOT or even previous Hot D episodes.
This show is better than most but it is not even close to how good the first episodes of GoT was, everyone played GoT in GoT, nobody was just doing nothing for very long, untill the directors had to make up their own boring storyline.. Some parts of this show is just as when you walk in mud, get out of the stupid mud and stalk walking normal..

We met those characters 20 years after the mad king died when the Realm had been at the height of corruption for years , Those characters had been playing the game for over 20 years well into their journeys. Larys, Alicent etc are at the comparative beginning of their journeys coning from Peacetime. Its like we're seeing the making of Littlefinger, Cersei etc. Fascinating.
That doesn't explain why they constantly make idiotic decisions. These characters are just not intelligent. Tyrion had literally zero experience being in charge of anything (other than sewage) and was amazing because he's intelligent and intelligently written.

I agree with Alex - House of Dragons is good, but it feels like "Game of Thrones Lite" in the sense that NONE of the characters are even close to the tier of characters from the original series (such as Tyrion, Littlefinger, Tywin, Jon Snow, etc)

I'm with Alex on this. This episode was middling at best. Great acting and what not: the writing on the other hand leaves much to be desired. Lots of time with not much happening. And three episodes now of both Rhaenyra and Daemon on repeat of the same tired nightmares, we get it, Daemon is in a weird headspace, and Rhaenyra doing not much of anything.
I think it's 8 episodes because of the end point... they don't want to change the books and it's the right decision. So we could get 12 episodes for season 3 for example. Anyway, we can't complain of the pause between seasons when we get CGI battles like this on a streaming show.
There are long 8 episodes, 1h each because they figured out they cannot wait 2 years between seasons because the viewership drops significantly. Cutting the episode counts helps them to deliver the season annually.
I wasn’t expecting this episode to be a big mover in any regard tbh and I think it’s fine. Assumed it would mostly be wound licking and retrospective views of the first major conflict.

GOT had entire seasons where nothing substantial happened. Just more and more minor characters were introduced without any progress on the major arcs. And major characters off doing stuff that ultimately had no relevance to the end. Rewatching GOT now, and there are a lot of brutally boring episodes. The only thing that has me a bit bored now is the Daemon-Witch-Harranhal stuff which I admit is a bit aimless at this point.
To be fair, GOT involved many Houses. Covered Westeros and surrounding continents. HOTD is specific to House Targaryen. How the dragons fell. Disappeared from the land (and sky) scape.

It aint exactly cheap to film regular talking scenes either. Its 20mil per episode apparently, so having 10 episodes a season is pretty pricey.

The Dance of Dragons isn’t all battles, and at this point in time Rhaenyra doesn’t even have an army so we’re not gonna get any of the huge battles until season 3 or later. Game of Thrones wasn’t battle heavy either until the later seasons when the writers ran out of books

Also as for Alex saying most ppl suck at playing the game, Rhaenyra admits as much cause they all grew up In times of peace.
He mentioned that Vermithor and Silver Wing are the biggest they have. Cannibal is supposed to be around Vermithors size but Cannibal doesn't do anything during the war and never got involved so maybe they don't want to mention him. Maybe we'll see him a bit but that's it.
We're supposed to get to see 5 new dragons this season, i think they will show all 3 wild ones

Alex brings up good points. This season is almost over and we need to get some momentum on team blacks end.
They should do a high budget HBO Miniseries about Aegon the Conquerer. They can even add in the creation of the dragons, The Doom of Valyria, Aegon's dream of A song of Ice and Fire and all the way to the last fight against Dorne. A Miniseries though, none of this stretching out the material. We want war and fights.

As you mentioned about being interested in the characters compared to GoT, I realized there's not a lot of stand out characters in HotD. (To me at least). GoT did very well in making even side characters enjoyable to watch.

This feels like a better thought out last season of Game of Thrones, we're just moving at such a fast speed that we really dont have time for "down" episodes. I mean Aegon was King for like a week it feels like but long enough for those Rat Catchers to decompose down to Skeletons lol. Im enjoying the show but wish we had time for things to breath more. Thats what made Game of Thrones so good early on.

I am kinda over daemons harrenhal adventures. I feel like he's being torn down so that the audience turns against him since he was a season one favorite, just so he can do some crazy redemption arc stuff later. Just my theory, no book spoilers please.
Daemon is not being sidelinded because he was popular but because they want to make this season Aegon and Aemonds. Which sets up for later when Aemond and Daemon have their interactions.
Daemon is getting character development. Facing his decisions and how his actions hurt the people he loves and cares about and how his quest for power just hurts everyone around him. He's not being torn down because people like him, he's being torn down because he's being haunted by the ghosts of his decisions.
A breather? more like a nap, almost fell asleep during this episode, the slog arc of Harrenhal is really dragging on 🥱
Alex summed up the way I thought about the episode. GRRM should split the book into novellas. Kind of like tv seasons only with a large book being split up.
He probably hasn't so he can go back an change things if he writes himself into a corner, which I think has been happening alot hence why it's taking so long. Endings are hard, especially when you've revealed the broad strokes in the TV adaptation and everyone fucking hated it.

Going back and rewatching season 1 and comparing it to what we have currently with season 2, this current season is dragging and has next to nothing happening every episode.
Season 1 has various time skips, covering decades.
Maybe I wasn't paying attention but it seems like they just breezed on by the loss of Rhaenys and Meleys without a care. I expected that loss to be hard-hitting news for Rhaenrya and her counsel, with discussion on how to move forward. I dunno, I'd give this episode a 7, there were good elements but pacing is becoming a problem.
I'm lost on Daemon's plot overall, some witch-maid is influencing him? They'll need to move that along quick given that the one lord saw her interacting with him.
Maybe it'll all make more sense as the season comes to a close but I felt bored when the credits ran :(

Rhaenyra thinks the only thing she can do is fight, even though Rhaenys was more battle-ready and had a dragon far greater and STILL got taken down. Jace and Baela did hold it down for me, and as much as I hate Team Green, Aemond is competent and fitting the villain role well. I'm also tired of the thing with Daemon and Harrenhall. I could not give two craps about Alys Rivers. Granted I like seeing him being haunted by his own bad decisions, the scenes are just weird and unnecessary. The mom thing? WTF?
It feels like they are stretching it out to do more seasons to me. Last season jumped around but I liked the pace. Cause it was focusing on the Game. This season seems like it’s a lot of wheel spinning to get 4 ok seasons out of what think could have been 3 great seasons

The problem with all of Daemon's hallucinations is that when it came to the scene when he is being told off by the Brackens I couldn't tell if it was actually happening or not.
These guys are just criticizing the book now. "They took the hand plot from Jace and gave it to Rhaenyra for her to do something". So the show is doing better than the book then.
No the show is obsessed with Rhaenyra and Allicent as its leads and it needs to let the two of them go as they're ultimately just two characters in a much larger narrative.

I think the point of Rhaenyra these episodes is exactly that: she can't do nothing because of her gender. Is a well done and good commentary on the fact that war is made by man and those won't listen to a woman. Same happened to Alicent. Rhaenyra is frustrated and constantly blocked by the comments of her council and the acts of Daemon and others. These episode for me has some really good wrinting and scenes. Tension keeps going up and up. Good review, guys!
I have absolutely no idea what would prompt you to think they’ll “run out of time” to finish the major events of the dance. The only major thing I can think of is daemon taking harrenhal later than usual, even still they’re well on track.

Was nice to see the after effects in Cole of apparent Dragon fear, something Dragonlance did really well that I remember from those books.

The Tully’s were named the regeants of the riverlands because they were the first house to bend the knee to aegon the conqueror.
Also they are t distracted with a blood feud unlike the Blackwoods and Brackens

But I like how the main characters have no idea what they're doing, because none of them have really seen war. It makes sense that everyone is a little dumb.
Unfortunately this is what happens when you turn a chapter into a series it's not going to be as deep or detailed as game of thrones was

I'm with Alex I do think next week will be better for people like us. They will get into how they will turn the city on the greens and it looks like people will arrive to the spooky castle lol.
