when Japanese invaded straits of Malacca..some of babas and nyonyas ran away to Phuket.Thailand is the only SEA country not invaded from any other outsider.that is why a community of babas and nyonyas in Phuket
That is an excellent conversation. Yes, being a baba today still has relevance. Baba culture has a strong emphasis on being refined, cultured, and decorum. Not so much on material possession. Similar to the Japanese but not that cold stifle formality. Thanks for taking charge of reviving this genteel and beautiful lifestyle. I am old enough to remember how it was back then.
Somehow, the culture of Baba Nyonya was developed at the Maritime Trade Golden Age.(From 15 the century until the current day!?) A bit elaborated and fancy way of life. Rich was not the problem, but how to balance with Modern life will be a crucial issue. Interesting! How to well keep the tradition is a great challenge. Best Wishes! It means Mix and Muticuture is possible. 🤗🤓
My great-grandmother was also a Nyonya, I just found out recently, does that mean my grandmother is also a Nyonya? So I'm 1/4 Nyonya, right? No wonder the food in our family is so similar to Nyonya food, and Nyonya rice dumplings are making during the Dragon Boat Festival. We like Nyonya kuih so much , and food with santan. Thank you for this amazing video.
YOU ARE NYONYA,the strait CHINESE woman.Your family preserved such traditions unintentionally which is completely fine and common because it's all about family traditions. As a True-Blue Peranakan Chinese I can said, people often confused that Baba-Nyonya is a race which is 100%incorrect and mislead by some media and common belief.Do not forget that PERANAKAN isn't a RACE,and we Baba-Nyonya are none other than Hokkien,Teochew,Cantonese,Hakka descendant who stayed in Southeast Asian countries longer than any other Chinese descendants and they localised their lifestyles while preserving Chinese tradition from generation after generation.Which nowadays labelled as"Peranakan Chinese Cultures"or"Baba-Nyonya cultures".Other than Baba-Nyonya term,in Terengganu will be called as"Awang"dan"Amek"and in Thailand Phuket,Nyonya will be called as"Yaya".
@@ekasuryaputralim9477 In general that is true Being a baba is more or less accepting a baba lifestyle and norm that put decorum, refinement, and style on an equal basis as a material possession. But Baba does have Malays(Indo, Batak, Bali, Minang)DNA On average baba has 5 to 10% Malaay DNA according to a study done by NUS. But curiously 10% of Baba is pure Chinese with no Malay DNA whatsoever. That throws a spanner into stereotypes of who is Baba
oh my god my situation is same with u!! my mom only tell me that my great grand-mother is nyonya when i was 15 years old, which make my grandmother is 1/2, and my mom is 1/4 and me myself is 1/8? So i think i am also a nyonya descendant? and i remember when i was a kid my mom will always brought me the nyonya kuih and i really love it even until im adult now, didnt know that was nyonya kuih, i thought it was chinese kuih b4 hahaha
Peranakan not only Baba Nyonya. But there are Chetti, Kristang, Arab and Jawi. More info my father even though he is Bugis, he still has Arab blood from his grandfather. My mom even tough she is Javanese, she still Baba Nyonya blood for her grand-great-grandmother. My mother likes to cook food using sesame, mushroom stock, coconut milk, chili. The most impressive dishes are Ayam Pongteh, Kapitan Curry, Cap Chye, and Ikan Asam. Meanwhile, when my father cooks fried rice, he likes to use lots of spices so that it tastes like nasi kebuli.
stupid government......why baba and nyonya not consider as bumiputera like Siamese Malaysia.....they are ready came to Malay before Portugese invaded Malacca in year 1511
Well the word bumputera is for people who do not know how to use their brain hahaha Unfortunately from the Arabs ideology they have abandoned their own beautiful costume Kebaya ..hahaha Fortunately for the intermarriage from the local with the chinese they have preserved their costume and their culture and integrating with the chinese culture ....
Peranakan Culture, a World Heritage Culture.
Ya it also a very unique and beautiful culture . Thanks for your comments.

Zhang He with the princess han li po?
Is there anyone who could tell me the title of the song at the end of the documentary?
The music of film credits is
