tips on how to comfortably play in weird odd time signatures?
Okay! I’ll work on it
I’m sure David will do a much better job in his video, but I’ve found a great place to start is breaking down the time signature into smaller pulses or groupings. I.e. 7/8 becomes 2+2+3, 13/8 becomes 3+3+3+2+2. Find a repeatable pattern you can lean into (whether it’s a one bar, two bar, four bar phrase, etc.) and that’s typically easier to commit to muscle memory.

David… thank you. I believe you inspire many. The quote of the day, “I’m not going to try to put on any front.” That is authentic and it is why you captured my attention back in your cruise ship days. I am 51 years old and set up my high school drum set (1965 Slingerland, with parts and pieces) in my home office and when the feeling strikes, I sit on down and hammer out some rock tunes. It’s never too late to keep learning and… I love it… be a better human being. You have grown so much, I can’t wait to see where you go. My name is Dan K, and I play the drums too.
