I am 59 years old and have just heard Strange Fruit sang by Billie Holiday for the first time in my life....... a most hauntingly beautiful song...... yes it has meaning as all songs, music , poems etc do..... I feel so much of our history and culture has been hidden or not readily or easily accessible to us through intentional means ..... until now the Information Age .

Lady Day’s label refused to record “Strange Fruit.” Billy Crystal’s uncle recorded it instead. That is the reason that we can listen to this important song.

She sounds so different here compared to other brief snippets I’ve heard of her before.
For a moment ent I wasn’t sure it WAS her. The only clips I’d heard of her talking were LONG after the drugs, smoking and drinking and paying her dues in nightclubs over decades had ravaged her voice. When I heard her speak she sounded hoarse and throaty.
She sounds so soft and incredibly shy here - a little awkwardness with a very sweet nervous laugh. Her speaking voice was very beautiful, I’m glad I got to hear this.

I have been devoted all my life to what people call classical music, but Billie Holiday is one of the exceptions to my rule. Apart from her lovely phrasing she brings truth into her words, they become completely meaningful with a touch of irony her only match in classical music is Elisabeth Schumann.

Hulu has the movie, “Billie Holiday vs the United States”, and all of us that are Lovers of her music, watching this is a must. It’s not a pretty story, which we already know, but it’s shown so realistically that I watched half and had to take a break! She suffered abuse all her life and was just trying to get through life with all the luggage she had to carry. Nobody called addiction a disease, nobody thought she needed counseling. They just say the gift. And the song “Strange Fruit” there was powerful men that did not like her singing it and had no problem stepping on her as if she was a bug. You will definitely feel feelings, but I’m finishing it tomorrow.

The system Billie lived under was and maybe is so cruel. Sad life. She could sing and escape in her songs and her dreams, but the punks wouldn't even let her do that. She's a martyr to all downtrodden people. The inhumane treatment she was exposed to doesn't disappear and get forgotten. It is logged and comes out somewhere else, like an energy flow. It's unstoppable. Her sad life was not in vain. Everyone and everything has a purpose.

You told me it was coming right away 'i mean the 3rd part. but really its been too long and I guess you understand (ink spot amazing song) Im a huge billie's fan and that 3rd part is like a hole in my heart cause you put too much out there those 2 parts and I wanna listen the end shes so awesome. But no arms to you without you this would have never been in my mind but i mean its just you put it in my mouth and the guess the end of lady day. The BEST SINGER EVER.
