" i want to sing how Louie Armstrong played"- Billie Holiday, used her voice like an instrument. Shes amazing and was way ahead of her time.... I love her dearly& God bless her soul✌🏾️
I am 59 years old and have just heard Strange Fruit sang by Billie Holiday for the first time in my life....... a most hauntingly beautiful song...... yes it has meaning as all songs, music , poems etc do..... I feel so much of our history and culture has been hidden or not readily or easily accessible to us through intentional means ..... until now the Information Age .
Lady Day’s label refused to record “Strange Fruit.” Billy Crystal’s uncle recorded it instead. That is the reason that we can listen to this important song.
If anyone has a chance to visit St Ramonds Cemetery in the Bronx. be sure to leave a stone on Billie's "FINAL" resting place. Sleep in peace dear child, your heart will go on.
She sounds so different here compared to other brief snippets I’ve heard of her before. For a moment ent I wasn’t sure it WAS her. The only clips I’d heard of her talking were LONG after the drugs, smoking and drinking and paying her dues in nightclubs over decades had ravaged her voice. When I heard her speak she sounded hoarse and throaty. She sounds so soft and incredibly shy here - a little awkwardness with a very sweet nervous laugh. Her speaking voice was very beautiful, I’m glad I got to hear this.
Billie was always clean like a new department store mannequin in the finest department store- truly one of the most stylish women in music history and definitely a fashion icon.
I just watched lady sings the blues and was wondering if I could find anything on the real Billie Holiday and came across these archives of her I never heard her speak until now so thank you for allowing me to hear and see the real Lady Day💖
The Hulu movie is way better lady sings the blues left a lot out and compared to the Hulu movie ..was a joke because why they picked Diana Ross to play her is beyond me like Diana but sorry they left out she was married three times ..
It is such a treat to hear Lady Day's Beautiful Sultry voice .. sure sounds much better hear in '48 then on the first interview. R.I.P Billie you are much missed and never Forgotten.
@Sondra Vickers Certainly not! It pisses me off, that Billie seemed to get abused from all directions. From assholes in the goverment to the men in her life. She was a national treasure, but didn't appear to be treated as such. Not when it counted, that's for sure.
@@blancamiranda4153 she did but that’s not why they treated her bad it’s because she had no rights being black and a woman to protect her and because they were damaged coward men who were after money and took advantage of a good woman
Billie Holliday sings me to sleep sometimes with her soothing voice and romantic words of love & heartache...a kindred spirit who understands your pain. I’m glad I got to hear Lady Day speak. RIP💙
A first class trip back in time how captivating, dearly appreciated! My mom was one of her biggest fans and how ironic my mom died at the same age. Very ravishing! Thanks to whom it may concern XOXO!! 💙
Ty for these interviews. It's nice to hear Billie speak & sing. I enjoyed hearing this on her born day & I will celebrate her every year. She was an inspiration to the world. We love u always & miss you
You can tell that the interviewers we're flabbergasted by Billie's presence.... of course they were....she was the Lady Day! This is why my dining room is dedicated to her.! She and I have experienced great pain in our lives!!!
Thank you for posting these short interviews of Billie Holiday...Its so wonderful to hear her natural speaking voice which resonates just like her singing voice. ❤🎶
How interesting that she wanted to sing like Louis Armstrong played!! Now I know how she developed her sound! Thanks for a chance for me to travel to the 40's to hearMiss Lady Day be interviewed. Another thing, now I know how she got her moniker, Lady Day! What a priceless video! Thanks for posting this! I love it!
I love Billie Holiday aka Lady Day she was real and honest 🥰❤️🖤💚 society TRYED to beat her down but she always stood tall, she will always be a lady to me🥰❤️🖤💚
I have been devoted all my life to what people call classical music, but Billie Holiday is one of the exceptions to my rule. Apart from her lovely phrasing she brings truth into her words, they become completely meaningful with a touch of irony her only match in classical music is Elisabeth Schumann.
loved loved loved...these vintage photo's of MS. HOLIDAY, she has been one of my favorite singers...her songs were sung...with such emotion an layed back kind of way!🎶💋sleep well princess 🌹

I'm so glad the United States vs Billie Holiday was made. Personally, I always knew there was more to Billie Holiday it's in her voice when she sings. This interview made me love her more. She was full of humility and confidence and poise. Proof that your circumstances don't define you and should never define you.😇🥰
Hulu has the movie, “Billie Holiday vs the United States”, and all of us that are Lovers of her music, watching this is a must. It’s not a pretty story, which we already know, but it’s shown so realistically that I watched half and had to take a break! She suffered abuse all her life and was just trying to get through life with all the luggage she had to carry. Nobody called addiction a disease, nobody thought she needed counseling. They just say the gift. And the song “Strange Fruit” there was powerful men that did not like her singing it and had no problem stepping on her as if she was a bug. You will definitely feel feelings, but I’m finishing it tomorrow.
when I first heard Southern Tree, i was mesmerized by that song she wrote. I love this queen who had such a tragic life. thank God I have her music to listen too.
The system Billie lived under was and maybe is so cruel. Sad life. She could sing and escape in her songs and her dreams, but the punks wouldn't even let her do that. She's a martyr to all downtrodden people. The inhumane treatment she was exposed to doesn't disappear and get forgotten. It is logged and comes out somewhere else, like an energy flow. It's unstoppable. Her sad life was not in vain. Everyone and everything has a purpose.
You told me it was coming right away 'i mean the 3rd part. but really its been too long and I guess you understand (ink spot amazing song) Im a huge billie's fan and that 3rd part is like a hole in my heart cause you put too much out there those 2 parts and I wanna listen the end shes so awesome. But no arms to you without you this would have never been in my mind but i mean its just you put it in my mouth and the guess the end of lady day. The BEST SINGER EVER. .
Andra Day NAILED her speaking voice.
I agree! I wish my late parents were able to see the movie. Billie was my mom’s favorite idol including Nat King Cole.
She definitely did Billie pretty close but Andra Day voice was more raspy & deep than Billie's. But the acting was so dead on her.
@@princesssmalik1 You are right about both voices!
Yes!!!!
Indeed and her Singing
Voice ! It was.a.Great job ! ❤
Billie Holliday seemed very humble and not bothered by all the attention.
Just stopped by after watching US vs Billie Holiday. Andra Day's portrayal is spectacular, heart wrenching & soulful
Just finished the movie. Andria Day did a phenomenal portrayal of Billie.
Didn't she though? Wow. Such a good movie.
Andra, not Andria. She did an excellent job
SHE DID!! AND IT WAS HER FIRST MOVIE!
I did not like her performance that much, it was over the top.

"She had a horn-like voice & 'Prez's' (Lester Young) sax sounded like a human voice."
. . . then Miles Davis -- among so many others -- came along and played the way Lady Day sang.

Her voice matched her singing style. How rare is that. We are so fortunate. So fortunate.
My kids ask me why I like to listen to Billie Holiday? I tell them, her singing calms my soul.
Wow, yes and sooo deeply
She calms my soul as well.....Well said....
No singer will ever touch her song interpretations or her innate sense of Rhythm. She is my favorite singer & I'm sure I'm not in the minority here. :)
of course they will...tons of singers will have and do, don't be ridiculous. your words are subjective nonsense.
I agree!
The unmusical, and those are in the majority, have no clue!

Billie was not just a great singer, she was also very pretty, especially when she wasn't using.
Yes! She was gorgeous in her prime. I'm surprised I don't see that mentioned more in the comments.

No one could/can sing jazz in Lady Day's style....the hanging back behind the beat, the absolute soul....can make you cry.
I love to hear her giggle!! I love you LADY DAY💋💋💋💋💋
My father introduced me to Lady Day in the early 70's, & I thank God everyday that he did!

I love Lady Day. She was amazing. I wish I could've seen her perform. I imitate her singing sometimes. There is no one that touches her sound. Thx !
I’ve imitated her since I was 12 when I saw the first movie. My Dad had her 78’s!

I think she was a kind and gentle soul. Unlike the male interviewer who borders on intimidating, being a jerk, dominating.
Jane...they say she had a mouth like a sailor, thats why the men in her life would beat her up...maybe thats not true who knows.
@Sondra Vickers Certainly not! It pisses me off, that Billie seemed to get abused from all directions. From assholes in the goverment to the men in her life. She was a national treasure, but didn't appear to be treated as such. Not when it counted, that's for sure.
