I liked the way you put that, a vocalist being generous because they share there gift continuously. When I think of it in this way it's a wakeup call to me. We all have gifts we are supposed to share.
If only they had UA-cam back then so she could tell her story! Im mad she had to cut her off. Etta's vibe is on a whole different level. I really enjoy her spirit and voice.❤️
She led a very trying and difficult life but she endured. She’s to be admired for her music and ability to overcome some of life’s greatest challenges!!
Insensitive ass hell, cut off her emotions like that. Etta should’ve cussed her ass out. The history importance in that moment. Robbed Etta & the fans, evil bitch.
You sound stupid she had cancer that's why she had to shave her hair off what that got to do with anything, she still was a beautiful woman and had a amazing voice😇😇😇😇🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏SIP
Etta James was one of my favorite singers ❤️❤️❤️ That voice and her style were legendary - she is an icon and there will never be another singer with a voice to compare to hers, beautiful and with such deep emotion 🌈🎶🙏😍💚🍀
there will never be another like Etta James...she was definitely a one-off, in the best possible way. And her approach to singing, was to just give herself to the song. There were no runs or note-wiggling, with her. She was more of a surgical interpreter of song...which is to say, "less was more' with her. She knew when the lyric needed her to belt..she knew when the lyric needed her to lay back on a note. And she knew when an upbeat tune, needed her kind of energy. She was a singer's singer...and a total pro.
Ain't nobody bettah than Miss Etta. A true musical genius and icon. She set the standard for all who followed her. A musical legend 1 we will never see the likes again.
Billie Holiday was giving her for warning I think that was wonderful I think Etta James has terrific and as all things with black artist, there accolades as well as Awards always come late that needs to be changed big time. Thanks for posting this interview
This is shortly after I saw Etta in concert for the first time. I remember when she closed her show with "Sugar on The Floor"-.it was was one of the most poignant, heartbreaking pieces I've ever seen in a live performance in my life. It still ranks as one of my most favorite concert experiences of all time.
I have just come across this interview with Ms James. What a lady!!!! Here in the UK, BBC 4 is showing footage of the Montreux jazz festival and her first appearance in 1975. Her sublime version of Somethin's gotta hold on me plus her tremendous backing musicians is a testimony to all this incredibly modest lady would go on to achieve.. .. The Sublime Ms Etta James.
First, I love Etta James so much! She has such an incredible voice and such incredible music. Second, she reminds me so much of my aunt! Third, I was shocked to see a young Matt Lauer at the end of the video!
I caught her several times mid 80s at the HOLLYWOOD VINE STREET jazz joint, a small supper club. It was Etta, her large voice, her piano and an audience. Nothing else added. WOW ! (I was scouting acts for my 1988 TV pilot "ON RIVERSIDE DRIVE" )
Etta's father is from Illinois , A small mining town where I live. Minnesota Farts was his name. The best pool player in the world. He had my boyfriend stand on milk crates as a small child so he could reach the pool tables , he taught my boyfriend to shoot pull as good as he did. When my boyfriend took me out to the bars he would make thousand dollar bets on the pool tables and win every time. People would gather round the pool table and watch him run the table. I was only 17 at the time with a fake I.D. my boy friend was 21. Those was the good old days of my youth. All those pool games was here in local bars in southern Illinois. We never knew Etta James was Minnesota Fats child cause he never mentioned her . FATS played pool all over the world. But his home was here with us coal mineing people. TYPO ERROR....meant to spell FATS not farts , also POOL not pull.

A Grammy for being a Jazz Singer! I don't know about that! Etta didn't scatt she sang R&B and recorded some standards and did a great job. When it comes to a real jazz singer. Sarah, Betty, Carmen are the real jazz singers.
1986 album "Blues in the Night Volume One: The Early Show" with Eddie Vinson, and from that time on I was a total convert, 37 years ago. For me she was the greatest ever....above even Billie, Aretha, Ella, Dusty et al.
Fats used to cruise Central Avenue and hang with the folks when he was in town. Etta's mother Dorothy was a good-timing woman who dealt with a lot of men in those days -- no snark intended, that's just the truth, and Etta would have been the first to confirm it -- and Etta said Fats was one of the men she'd been with.
It was an amazing read. I got mine from Ebay about a year ago. I also wanted to hear the end of the story even though it is in the book it was nice hearing her tell it.
Ironically Billy warned her about the drugs, but she still went there anyway. Etta had such a hard life, she didnt know how to make good choices or love herself. I hope she got there im the end.
