I guess I’m. It the only weirdo that can do this. I’ve never actually had some injury ofmessed up back, I can just stick of my shoulder blades and freak people out
Hey Bob and Brad! I'm 27 years old and have severe bilateral winging also from EMG tested Long Thoracic Palsy. I'd love to know what Bob was able to do as his condition seems a little different than most (Although I think mine is the same.) I would love a response and you guys have been a big blessing in my life already!
My shoulder blades stick out just so that I can’t comfortably sit in a chair that has a hard back. I have good posture and even when I sit up straight with my shoulders back my shoulder blades still stick out.
I've suffered from scapular winging for about 10 or 11 years now. It's interesting that you said that it was caused by a viral infection because the 1st naturopathic chiropractor I saw told me that my injury was due to an infection. I did not fall or anything. Long story short, I couldn't afford to keep seeing him & ended up trying a host of other things only to still have the issue but now it's worse in regards to pain & discomfort
Try going to a neurologist. It is not a virus. Your symptoms & duration are classic Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy AKA Landouzy-Dejerine Syndrome. It is genetic & there is now a cost-free test for it from the Jones Lab @ U of Nevada.
I think that I have this issue. My back hurts when I lie down also resting on the "bad shoulder" and also resting on the good shoulder. It's a torture! Can't sleep, pain killers ate not working!
These Docs helped me out with my low back sciatica pain...I did the stretches on the floor the McNamara position until the spine set back in place I also do the inverted table to stretch out the spine
Im dealing with the same exact thing, inflammation brought on by virus, no innervation of the serratus, long thoracic nerve palsy, going on a year now 😕
I have scapula winging from years of bench press. How many times per day or week do you recommend doing these exercises? How many repetitions or how long should you do each one for?
I really like you Mr.Bob and Mr.Brad. I am an Occupational Therapist. And I think that I have winged scapula. I am going to do these exercises. Greetings from Turkey.
Dear Bob and Brad. Please help me. My shoulder blade started to stick out at a young age and now I'm 16 years old and the back side of my rib cage is curved outwards on my right side. Please help me🙏
Thank you guys for putting this out there. I know it's simple techniques, but it is great to hear it from actual physicians, with directions on how far to push, & what to use. My scapulas look like a Pterodactyl.
@@perry3175 it's not fixed, but it's much better, I figured out sleeping on my back helps with my scapula, side sleeping was causing it to wing a whole lot. So exercise and sleeping position were most important
@@perry3175 the one exercise that helped most was push ups (and stretching). Every day, worked up from 10 girl push ups at a time, to sets of 30 with weighted vest. Just start slow, do them every day, and work your way up. I got to 200 a day. You'll eventually start slacking again like I did, but I felt so much better when I was doing lots of pushups.
I have always been able to flex the shoulder blades since I was born, I've never been injured in the shoulder area, my mother has said I've been able to do this since I was born, so I have no idea how I'm able to do that, because I searched on the internet & found nothing on being born with winged scapulas, never had any issues.
Ok I have a question, what if you can move them individually and together but have complete control over the movement's with no pain or caused from damage? I don't have to lay down to make my shoulder blades wing. I can move them separately using my arm muscles, better if I am sitting but I can also do them standing up. I have been able to do this since I can remember and I'm 26 years old with no history of broken bones or muscle injuries. Thank you!
My shoulder blades dont stick out but I can make them stick out. When I was a kid I thought it was normal and that everyone could. I can wing out both of mine. My brother could wing out just one.

Pretty sure I trained myself to wing my scapulas with improper weight training. For over a year now I can't lay down for more than 4 hours before my back muscles tighten and a nerve starts getting compressed, wrapping around into my ribs (Long thoracic nerve?). I'm hoping these exercises help. Going to see physio next week to see if winging scapula is part of the problem. I've had hypertrophied upper traps for a long time, been working on reducing the tension, and acupuncture has helped a lot for that but the problem persists. Are there movements i should avoid (overhead?) to keep from irritating it? I'm a carpenter and likely doing something at work that's not helping the situation.
