How 13 Props Are Made For Movies And TV | Movies Insider | Insider - Розваги
It’s things like this that pulls me towards a career in film. This is utterly fascinating, moreso when you realize that every sound they take out has to be replaced by foley artists. Pool ball clinks? A foley artist at an old pool table just banging pool balls together. Same thing with the paper bags, shattered glass. Directors get all the credit but foley and props carry so much of a film and create the ability for the audience to be able to suspend disbelief as they watch the film. A movie requires so many moving parts all moving precisely the right way to be the least bit successful. I love this stuff!
You guys know you don't actually need any of these things, right?
We don't use as much foley nowadays.. we have access to HUGE SFX libraries where we can just grab the sounds from.
Now, if its a major film with a stupid budget for post.. maybe. But for most things that require audio replacement we just grab a file.
(Im a post sound audio engineer in TV since 2001)
@@drdelewded what are the most in demand jobs on movie/tv show sets? I’m going to do more research on this online but it’d be helpful to hear it from someone that works in the field
@@johnstrawb3521have you seen the difference between a college kid's film project vs a professional movie? The sound is a dead giveaway. It's just like the example they gave in the video with Melissa Mccarthy holding the bags. You can barely hear her over the bags.
Just don't. Really. All the public sees are fancy highlight reels that glamourise film and tv. The reality is that the majority of film and tv jobs are poorly paid with what would be considered abusive work hours in other fields.
Directors get a lot of credit because a lot of the time films or programs just wouldn't be made at all if it was not for the director.
Props to these amazingly talented people.
i see what you did there.
They made these silent props only to add the sound that the props originally made in post, it's a waste of money and resources
You stole my thunder!!
Dad joke bu dump bump
I really love seeing how props are made for film and TV, especially food, and usually it isn't even edible.
And those dishes looks so delicious
Hm. The caterer will often prepare the food that gets eaten (and spat out over 50 takes). It's usually pretty good.
I knew a food photographer. She should me how she made all the fake food. It was really interesting
When I started this video I was like “OVER AN HOUR?!?!” And now I’m thinking to myself “WAIT! MORE PLEASE!!”
I used to work with RJR Props… RJ is a really nice guy, pointed out all the differences on fake bills they use to be safe.
These great professionals are the reason i never skip the opening and closing titles.
As someone noise sensitive I wish these items existed all over life
Create ur company
Could wear ear plugs to reduce the sound. Cloth bags and plastic bags exist that don't make same sound as paper bag.
You don't really want to sit on chair that falls apart easily.
Wait, isn't this an old video? well especially the first 8 mins
Yes
I was gonna say
I think it's a compilation of all of their prop related videos so far
Yup
It defs is lol
I worked as a graphic designer for a community college. Once the theatre department were performing “A Christmas Story” and needed boxes of Red Ryder BB Gun for a store display. I made the artwork to cover the boxes using original photos as a guide. It was a lot of fun to create & lend realism to the production.
As a indie filmmaker who founded a small indie studio with their close mates I love watching and just absorbing all the knowledge from all these types of videos
(Also for anybody wondering I do most of the work in my films like writing the scripts, music, acting, filming, editing and prop making... as I have way too much time on my hands)
This was incredibly interesting. I always enjoyed seeing how movies are made especially the effects in it's many forms. There was tv show ( I can't remember it's name) that showed how FX (practical) was done in movies. Before the prolific use of CGI. With my love for film one of sons decided to be a writer and director of movies. Even going to college for it.
It's funny to see every person who works in a different department say that whatever they work on is its own character. The people who make the clothes say "That dress was its own character in the film." The people who make up the houses say "The house was its own character in the film." The people who prepare the food are like "That feast was its own character in the film." The people who prepare the vehicles "That car was its own character in the film." The hairstylists "Their hair was its own character in the film."
Thats really impressive I feel like anything can be props!
Weird. This is the EXACT Same video that was uploaded a year or so ago. I loved it the first time
Yupp
I thought i was tripping
I realized the same thing.
Dats true
I think it's a compilation of all of their prop related videos so far
These people are geniuses. I love videos like this. More, please!
This is really amazing, I never considered how many issues movies would have with regural everyday sounds, and thought some type of editing post production was to clear them up! Amazing job on those props
Regural?
I think keeping the crinkling bag would have made the scene in Tammy funnier. It would have made it more uncomfortable.
haha props to these people
Nice pun :)
Ooooo I see what you did there! Nice😎
😅
The 1984 movie "To live and die in LA" had a plotline that revolved two secret service agents and Willem Defoe as a master counterfeiter. William Friedken directed and he said they hired a genuine counterfeiter as adviser on the film and just did what he said! They bought all the proper machinery, filmed their counterfeiting scenes without even notifying the real SS and just took their chances. Friedken said a large quantity of the counterefeited money vanished from the set -
I always thought paper bags in movies and Tv shows looked a bit weird
Bro this was incredibly awesome
The beer bottle breaking reminds me of a scene from the Tin Tin movie that steven Spielberg directed
This is just a collection of old videos right? I'm getting major deja vu from this.
I was hoping for something about how they do character mementoes - like pictures from the character's childhood, when the actors are now in their 30s, that sort of thing.
We usually just ask the actor to supply 20 or so options 😅
I thoroughly enjoyed this.
I just watched the whole video... im facinated
super magical thanks guys
That was pure joy to watch!
I wish I knew how they made the fake bricks. That is actually useful!
The prop guy has a funny channel. Great content!!👍🏻
1 hour all about movie props, this gonna be great
AWESOME !
I have so deeply missed you ,Stefan & Cookie !
Firstly "When you were a kid" ? Wasn't that last week ? You know my favorite video of yous was like a feature film? A love story, a suspense thriller with extreme sadness and much deep disappointment until the very costly ending of purest love and devotion at the time i got something in my ey causing it to leak with such joy ? Yes they love of the chicken ! MAGNIFICENT!
So i thank you wholeheartedly for all your hard work.

May the warm winds of heaven blow softly upon your house,
May the Great Spirit Bless all who enter there.
May your moccasins make happy tracks in many snows, and may the Rainbow Always touch your shoulder.
Peace to you.
James 😊
It would be a fun prank to make everything in someone’s house quiet.
I have been studying film as a hobby for 15 years, and never considered this little magic trick.
Thank you!
Fascinating! I didn't notice before; now I'll be looking for them like easter eggs.
This was EXCELLENT !!..I dont even know how I came upon this but im so glad I did !!! I never realized how much is put into props and such..just amazing..
I appreciate these movies for using practical effects.
Very impressive. I love that blacksmith.
“I love that blacksmith...”
-Starved Connor
I wouldn't change anything, I love the way it's delivered
this guy needs to make all food products so people can stop yelling at me about loud chip bags at 3 am
I'm glad This video took so long To finish because im Interested with acting
Scott Prop and Roll is the best. love that guy
The Sword Smith. If I had to pick an imaginary Sword Smith, he would look like this guy. I hope he’s teaching someone his craft.
Scott is a master of both props and Dad jokes!
Working late at Dapper Cadaver would scare the crap out of me. Day shifts only please 😬
Insider carefully crafting an interesting video I want to watch. So interesting 👍
Awesome✨
Props to all these people
9:46 You can see the anger haha
oh thats the kind of videos i love
29:04 Dapper Cadaver. I wonder which came first, the studio or the Spy’s magazine?
I love the wedding dress part
damn that one with that fake vomiting looks so real i actually had to vomit myself, damn it XD So thank you for that lol
Thanks for the advice on the insurance
I once did a scene as a boxer getting beat up. Had to have fake blood..it was karo syrup with red food dye and chocolate syrup...and it had to go in my mouth for several takes. It was super sweet and sticky and gross
1:04:50 oceanic airlines logos have some sweetbabyinc vibes imo
I used food coloring as blood for Halloween once. The brand we had in the house was the perfect color and texture and even turned brownish where it dried thin. Stained just like blood too.
I have yet to find that brand again since I don't remember the name and it was 15 years before I tried again and found out that not all food coloring is the same.
Ok i have 5 blown discs in my lowwr back1 or 2 of them arent in alignment so i dont have spunal fluid in my lower back. I have spondylitis & stenosis. The stenosis is putting pressure on my nervers this is just my lower back. I have scoliosis in my upper mid spine. My spine in pushing on my ribcage. It is twisting me & pulling my hip on rightside up. My neck is crooked to. I have arthritis & rheumatoid arthritis. So im in alot of pain all the time. Methadone makes life liveable. Ive been on it for 16 or 17 years.
The antique passports are the coolest i lowkey wish i could order one for myself just to have as a prop in my house as a novelty
Anyone else craving dates right now ? ^^
Why didn't Scott just sand the plastic balls so that paint would stick to them. It would also give that "scratched-up used" look of a real pool ball!
Balls from ball pits are pretty thin, maybe sanding down the whole surface caused rips or tears? I’m not sure how thick racquetballs are though so maybe they’re not any thicker. Idk just guessing
I love this
How tf does this only have 8k likes???
I'm not sure it was really explained-if so I apologize-but they generally only want to capture dialogue during filming and want ambient noise at a bare minimum. Extra is restaurant scenes only pretend to talk for example. Then they add the ambient noise back in after filming controlling the levels. That's why they want zero noise props.
Props
This is making me hungry!
HOLY CRAP ITS JOE FROM FOOD WARS
I have the opposite problem, I am animating a movie and a character is Flapping around a trash bag annoyingly and is supposed to make way too much noise
It's funny that a ball called Racket is the quiet one!
Gotta give them props 4 their attempts
Did you interview Scott Prop and Roll????
The black Smith should go on "Forged in Fire". I'd love to see him destroy the competition.
Interesting
Jackie Chan's movies: **Laughs in Sugar Glass**
Okay, where's the Gutsick Gibbon merch?
At least, where'd you buy those skull replicas in the background?
All of them died? 😱
I'm guessing the collision 💥 was head on and no one was using seatbelts? 🤔 New, expensive cars have many safety features to try to prevent something like this hapens 😬
1:04:54 EXCEPT ACME IS A REAL BRAND
As a little kid i ACTUALLY thought looney toons characters got there stuff from Acme (now an albertsons company). It was just Acme when i was a little one in the 70’s & early 80’s, now it’s Acme Markets. But ACME grocery stores have been around LONGER than looney toons…since 1891. So no, all these companies are not fake, and Im sure i wasn’t the only confused 4-5 year old who thought the brands were one and the same!
Interesting but way too many ads!
Thanks, UA-cam
Funny how youtube does not block your content with ads like other low like vids
A fake hammer would be real useful for faking a suspenseful scene to make it seem like it actually happened😮
Interesting video but that silent paper bag isn't really any more quieter than the Regular paper bag
I'm on the left, but even i have to say that that was the most crazy, nonsensical collection of words I've ever heard combined
reuploaded, wow.....
Yeah, I guess they combined some of their videos on those props and made this one!
It's just me or the silent props designer looks like Anthony Bourdain?
Fascinating, but that food really should be in food grade buckets if the food is going into the actors' mouths...
28:30 freeze and look for a figure its freakishly real as if someone painted it
howd they make that rust prop gun?
its funny to me that they pay a guy to make props have no sound, then pay another guy to add back in the sound and try to make it realistic....couldnt imagine why movies cost so much money
Bill Tull did it best.
What are the chances that I would end up seeing my 2 favorite actors of Hollywood (Norman Reedus and Josh Hutcherson)
Well I'm never eating dates again
After mixing metal food
props is always about solving a proplem
Wow, but what happens to most of the props in most television and movie props I would like to buy some if they were priced decent and and know how to bid for them.
Look online or if you can, visit studio lots
same, would prank my family by breaking a glass bottle on my brothers head
@@rosieposie2404 you should be able to find those break away bottles easily online. They aren't cheap tho!
@@TheSeanzy772 ok thankk you
Lots get stored and reused in other movies where they can. Lots of props are rented by production unless very specific or needing to be made as replicas or character specific like IDs, breakable, or close up props. Same with costumes lots of times

سلام عليكم ورحمة 🌹👍🌹
They went to college for Biology/Biophysics, graduated as Writers, and now own and work as artists making props.
Just shows you college is bs majority of the time.
They are definitely using the skills they learned in school, and they are undoubtedly paid very well. This is like one of the only times that going to college DOES pan out. Your logic doesn't connect A to B, but your final point is still true... college is BS most of time.
I don't understand the need for the silent props. In a properly made movie the sound is completely replaced with ADR and foley. The on set audio is only for reference. It's necessary in order to place every element where it's wanted in the multichannel mix
I wonder if Morley will change their design again now that Marlboro left the tobacco market.
I love stuff like this, although it does just give me a laundry list of things to point out when some idiot claims that some TV show or movie they saw was "realistic", especially the censor-marms that wring their hands about how audiences are being 'desensitized'. If they're being desensitized, it wouldn't even matter because the stuff they're no longer sensitive was never real in the first place! So many people have profoundly dysfunctional ideas about media and fiction.
