  • Reactica 2020 is a lot smaller than what we’ve done for previous years, with team members building a single machine idea rather than entire machine tables. There were two “official” build days towards the end of August, but team members ended up basically building on their own time and submitting their footage when they were done. The goal of this video isn’t to showcase new chain reaction tricks, but to be charming or thought-provoking as you learn more about individual machine building styles.
I’m still really grateful to have Reactica this year in some form. Thank you to the team for graciously lending your time to build! Hopefully for future years we’ll be able to work back up to the scale of our previous events. (Reactica 2021?)

I also want to give a shoutout to Domino World 2020! There are many ways to handle chain reaction events that aren’t in-person, and the Domino World team still went all-out and made a giant screenlink collab. So if you want to see a virtual chain reaction event that still focuses on showcasing chain reaction tricks, you should check out their work!

This is one of the best videos I’ve seen in years. Most machine videos these days follow a similar format. They showcase the final product, resulting in most of the reactions on the video to mainly consist of freaking out over the intricacies and the cleverness of the chain reaction. There aren’t that many machine videos out there that go beyond that, that take you into the story behind those finished products, unless it’s its own separate behind the scenes. But this video was brave enough to do it all in one. And the difference that it makes is an entire world. This is by far my favorite Reactica/CDM video because of how easy it was for me to connect with each character’s story behind their machine, even though I’m so much less advanced in the realm of machine building. Not only am I super impressed by the brilliance of each of the tricks but I now have an understanding of the intention and purpose behind each one, both externally and internally. Having that understanding made it so much easier to appreciate all the little details and goals that each builder set for their machines. Not only that, but it also gave the video the absolute warmest heart, with the thoughtfulness and sensitivity of each builder’s story. Thank you all so much for sharing this beauty of a chain reaction video. I can’t wait to see what this is going to lead to.

Wow! I am so happy you were able to still have Reactica this year even under our current circumstances. Now for some of my thoughts on each of the builder’s unique ideas.
    - TheRGMGuy01: Although TheInvention11 had already done something similar to this, I think it was neat seeing a new take on it. The way you wound the ball up was very clever as it was simple yet satisfying to watch. I think what makes this clip stand out is each of the connections in between, like the mind boggling flipping cups and falling track reuse. I also like how you released the ball at 3:21 by the actual string it was connected to.
    - berlagawesome: This idea gave me true Rube Goldberg/Josephs machines vibes. The trick itself is very satisfying in the way that it inflates slowly (I’m actually glad that you did not use a hair dryer as it would not have the same effect. This idea shows that tricks do not have to be complex to be good which is something unique about your style as you mentioned.
    - TheInvention11: Where do I even begin! This was probably my favorite idea in the whole video. The fact that you are able to conceptualize and create a trick as crazy as this is mind numbing. The actual trick is phenomenal and the pong shot at the end was a nice touch. Also, how reliable was the trick as the the ball on the second drop almost bounces out of the cup?
    - Flash Domino: This idea is a neat adaptation of two other machine tricks. Your style is very clean and I like how you made the connections as simple as possible not to take your eye away from the actual trick. I also think your technique of reinforcing hot glue with tape is nifty as in my personal experience hot glue does not stick well to plastic. I also like the sign revealer at the end!
All in all great video! It was very interesting to see each builder’s thought process for each idea. Thanks for organizing this and I hope to see you next year in person at Reactica LIVE! ;)

This such a interesting look in to each of the builders individual styles and how they execute them! All the of the tricks were insanely creative, especially Joel's Ferris wheel trick :)

    Nice
I liked the red cup wheel.
It took me way too long to figure out how the ball stayed in the flipping cups 3:13 then I finally seen it.

This was a very nice video that was super fun to watch and follow along. Glad you guys were able to do something in replacement of Reactica.

This is very exciting to so of the chain reaction ideas were amazing! I never expected if there was a Reactica 2020 video, but those tricks were something I've never seen anything like it!

this really gets me excited for more domino events, in the future when covid 19 is over, I have a bad feeling that more diseases will spread after this but I hope I'm wrong, and I hope I get to build more dominoes more often. And i hope you guys too
Also it's been almost 5 months now and most of you guys still don't know that I have made the worlds longest domino screen link, I spent a whole 2.5 weeks to make that and only 200 of the same people have seen it, and only 21 likes were given.
But anyway I really hope this covid 19 ends soon, and the events still go on, let us have the opportunity to eat the fruit of god

This is really well done! While it's a shame that Reactica didn't work out this year, it's cool to see you trying a machine collaboration in a new format. I really admired the complexity of Chase's clip. Wrapping a ball around string is actually an idea I've played around with before myself, but was never fully committed to it. It was really cool to see it done by Chase, especially with the beautiful matrix of multi-use elements and that beautiful spinning cup transition (which is literally one of my favorite parts of my video). As for Alex B's clip, it's such a clever use of two different foreign objects. I really like this trick and look forward to uploading it on my own channel soon! Joel's clip was incredible as expected. The ferris wheel cup idea is remarkable in the way it's satisfying to both standard and experienced chain reaction audiences. The launch at the end was also a nice touch. As for your clip, I can definitely see a lot of improvement in your style. It was cool how the wooden blocks fell the way they did to create a zig-zag path; it's a great fusion of two classic machine tricks.
Overall, great video! It was really cool to see each builder's thought process with each machine, especially with the more intricate ones. I would love to see a video with only the machines on West Coast Builders though if you find the time to make that. It's also cool knowing that every builder in this project was a participant in 11BC3! (which should be finished hopefully by the end of the month). Here's hoping that machine events can take place in-person next summer!

These machines are so amazing, though the way you talk about them makes it all seem so much more comprehensible. I love the explanations because you aren’t trying to sell/pitch how good the machine trick is or boast your machine skills. The machines can speak for that themselves, you just talk about the process of making that beauty real. I love this because I’m used to being shocked and blown away by how you’re able to make chain reactions like this, but just listening, tuning in for a few minutes about the mechanics of something (paired with the chill beats too 🥰), you are wiser and more knowledgeable than if you just saw it out of the blue - and there’s so much power in knowledge. A lovely, deep yet digestible dive into both the scientific and artistic sides of machine building.

Well said! This is the kind of impact I was hoping to have on casual viewers - it means so much to hear this from experienced builders too :)
