    This is great, but it leaves out the best line:
    Where the scenr’y is attractive
    And the air is radioactive
    Oh the Wild West is where I wanna be

      @@stevenbledsoe4186Back in the late 1940s & the 1950s & maybe even the early 1960s too, the casino-hotel-resorts of The Las Vegas Strip would have premium rooftop pools & jacuzzis & bars for guests which offered amazing views of the land where The U.S. Military would test their nuclear bombs & missiles. They'd have big viewing parties where everyone would gather on those rooftops, in the pools & jacuzzis & beach-chairs etc, to watch nukes get detonated out in The Mojave Desert.

      Many of Tom Lehrer song could have been in Fallout, yet none where there

    If I recall correctly he did some work with the physicists at Los Alamos for a short while, doing things like running the numbers and checking calculations as his background is in mathematics, but he very much disliked the paranoia and the high security of that environment. A lot of mathematicians cited similar reasons for later not wanting to work for NASA when the Apollo program came around.

    • @OGimouse1
      @OGimouse1 5 місяців тому +4

      I was just going to ask if this was the reason.

    • @warweasel2832
      @warweasel2832 4 місяці тому +20

      Yep, sometime between 1946 and 1955, while he was getting his doctorate.
      In 55 he was drafted into the army and worked in the NSA (even the existence of which was classified at the time), which is where he really got a look at where world politics was heading. He knows what he’s talking, or rather singing, about.

    • @SebastianJVW
      @SebastianJVW 4 місяці тому +18

      In 2020 he actually revealed that he was working for the NSA during that period, but because just the fact that the NSA even exists at all was classified until relatively recently, the nuclear program stuff is what he would say when talking about what he did back then. So yes, he was involved in stuff so classified that his *cover story* for talking about that period of his life was "nuclear secrets".

I swear I've seen a photo of my great grandmother in an outfit just like that down to the floral scarf and style of hat, on top of that you look eerily similar to her. I think this needs to be pointed out about 1953: John Wayne and some other famous actors and actresses were filming a movie called Genghis Khan about 100 miles away from the nuclear test sites in the West, later a few of them developed cancer and actually died from it. It's a sad story because you would think 100 miles away you would be out of danger, but it's listed as the deadliest Hollywood movie ever filmed😢😢

We would always try to stop him from singing classics like “I Hold Your Hand in Mine” and “Poisoning Pigeons in the Park,” but he always found a way. This is always so educational, what our country has been through and how we have evolved for the better comes to mind when I watch you. You’ve shown me how hurtful inappropriate can be. In their time perhaps it was appropriate to frame people as objects and catastrophe as humorous, changing times. This stuff served a purpose and I can’t thank you enough for being thought provoking and entertaining in your shows! Knowing our history helps us not repeat it, right?

    BVD is a popular underwear brand that was founded in 1876. BVD were the originators of the idea of selling packs of multiple pairs of underwear in plastic bags, a practice they began in 1951.
    100 years after their founding, BVD was purchased by their competitor, Fruit of The Loom, who themselves, filed for bankruptcy in 1999, until they were acquired by Warren Buffet's Berkshire Hathaway in 2001.
    Fruit of The Loom owed its bankruptcy largely to NAFTA, which set the stage for the destruction of the US textile industry, as competition from overseas that resulted from that trade agreement devastated the ability for Americans to compete.
    That trade agreement continues to prevent the advancement of competitive American manufacturing to this day, despite promises (wholly unmet) by the previous administration to curb its impact.
    Now you don't have to go down the Wikipedia rabbit hole, as I just gave you the highlights!
