- It's hard cooking for yourself! Here I take you through a typical day of eating as a retired, single gal. I focus on easy, inexpensive recipes that are healthy and very quick to make. Cooking for one does not have to be boring!

I just found your channel and love it. Though I am 71 and have been retired for8 years, I am learning new things watching your videos.
Thank you so much for watching! 🙏
This is the second video of yours that I've watched, it was another well done video, I am subscribing. It's amazing how many subs you have with 5 videos, you got skillz girl. 🙌🏼
Omg, thank you! I don’t know what happened! Maybe there is a lot of folks my age and they’re looking for their counterparts on UA-cam. Now I feel pressured to keep improving. Someone mentioned my lighting is not great! I don’t know how to fix it!!! These are like the only videos I have ever done so the learning curve is steep.
Omg! I’m 4’11” and slim too! I can confirm that it can much easier to gain weight as a tiny person. I also keep my diet simple and healthy. I have come to enjoy growing vegetables. It’s a relief knowing how it is grown.
I’m 51 and basically retired. I’m legally blind. I’ve spent a good amount of my time contemplating many of the topics that you address on your channel. I don’t have children. I haven’t figured out a “path” to employment with my eye disease. I’ve had to learn new skills and hobbies. Like you I’m focused on how I can have a great life and choose not to focus on things I can not control. 💗
I like the overhead shots of your meal prep - nicely done! 😀
Thank you so much. It took me forever to figure out how to do that.
So much of this obsessive fixation with eating and being afraid of calories or gaining weight. I love to cook for myself and eat a big variety of foods, thin people get old and die same as big people. Just try to enjoy life.
You look amazing at 62! I would have guessed way way younger! Amazing dishes and so healthy.
Awww, thank you so much for your comment. You absolutely made my day today. I saw a new wrinkle on my face this morning and I was feeling a little bit bummed out - now I feel good again.
Well there is a bit of a filter going on......
I don't like breakfast either, until about 10am. I also love my 1 cup of coffee each morning. I'm a big salad eater. Smoothies mostly in hot weather, I add hemp seed and flax seed before I finish blending. My lunch is always larger than my dinner also. I make sure I finish eating at least 3 hours before I go to sleep at night. I'm a new subscriber. Thanks for the video.
I am so glad I found your channel!! I am 57 and will be retiring next summer at 58 yrs. Your content is exactly what I was looking for. 😊💜
Thank you for watching and welcome here. I think you will love being retired. It’s so nice to just do whatever you want. The key thing is to be able to do things that give you pleasure and joy. Having hobbies definitely is a plus.
I'm not like you, on that I love cooking for one! I have a small appetite, and I make sure that my food is nutritious. I'm small, too, so I don't need much, but I do eat great food, simple, high quality, usually from raw ingredients.
I'm 85, and still luckily feeling well. I live alone, frugally! And happily. Single for many years, such a luxury, just pleasing me.
Good for you! Sounds like you are happy, which is the most important thing. Lol, cooking has never really been my thing. I can cook well, I make great bread and I took a diploma in holistic nutrition a couple of years ago just for fun, but I still struggle to get excited about it. I have developed a good repertoire of some yummy and healthy meals, and my goal is to share those on my channel with people that are in the same position as myself… that is they struggle just for themselves or for two people.
how i wanna look like when im 60 fr
lol! Thank you! You made my day.
I'm a bowl person as well. Your meals all looked very delicious. Just found your channel and subscribed. I am in my 70s, so have been retired for many years. I love having the time to do all of the things that I enjoy. Greetings from Southwestern Ontario.
Hello fellow Canadian and welcome here. Always happy to meet another bowl person!
I always eat from a pasta type bowl for every meal:)
I love every single one of these meals right down to the choice of bowl over plate! 😊
Your layoff story resonated with me ... I was laid off at 59 yo but fortunately I spent the majority of my career as a consultant so i "just pivoted" back to my roots. Took 2 years after my pivot to find a few good client fits, but I am now back in the game for a few more years until my youngest is settled in college and my oldest is settled in his post graduate life.
Welcome here and thank you for leaving a comment. Another bowl lover …I love it. Getting laid off is just really hard and, I don’t know …it kind of does leave you with that ick factor. I’m glad that you were able to pivot and go back to what you had done previously. Being able to run your own business or your own consulting firm is just so empowering. Good for you for having the courage to do that, because running your own gig, I think does take courage.
I love your videos. The retirement tips are great! I am also from Calgary and worked in the oil patch. So your story make a lot of sense. You're doing a good job!!
Oh thank you and I i’m so happy someone from Calgary is watching my videos!
I appreciate your honest genuine self of hard thoughts and being vulnerable with just trying different things that you give to yourself. Take care
Thank you for watching and thank you for leaving a kind comment. Welcome here. It is hard putting yourself out there on UA-cam but I have to say I find it easier than meeting new people. I’m such an introvert and I just suck in social situations so in someways UA-cam is actually easier!
I also try to keep a simple diet for my husband and I. I always have basic salad fixings, vegetables fresh or frozen in the winter and some protein. I donated all my cookbooks and all the specialized cake pans and cookie cutters.
Just found your channel Love your content very relaxing watching you 🎉
All these recipes look delicious and healthy!
Thank you I really try to make most of what I eat fairly simple and healthy. I actually did go back to school the year before I retired to take a diploma in holistic nutrition. Kind of a dumb move on my part because it was really hard and with working full-time at that point it was crazy! But now I enjoy having the knowledge. And it was a good switch up from being a corporate finance girl.
At 63 I try to eat healthy. I like to keep my weight down even though it seems my body wants me meaty, I fight it. Great snacks for night time. Thank you
Thanks for sharing your retirement with those who may be curious. I am looking to retire in about 5-7 more years when I hit 60. These videos are giving me some insight into how to prepare. Again thanks!
I’m also 5’ tall! Well, almost 😅 Your tofu lunch looks amazing!
Thank you for watching and yay for us shorter gals!
@@smallretiredlife yes! I’m making plans to renovate my kitchen and I noticed that your island looks shorter than your stove and countertops behind you. I thought about doing the same thing for prepping food. How’s it working out for you?
Nice video, good filming and editing. I cannot believe that you are new to UA-cam. You got this ! BTW, I am also a bowl person. Now I don't feel so weird !
Thank you
I enjoyed the video I will be a new Sub...I would love to see what you do to keep motivated ...Hobbies etc...Also don't worry about lighting and or noises in background there will always be people who like to say what's wrong with your videos and others who just enjoy everything about your video...enjoy and have fun with it...
First, thank you for watching and thank you for leaving a comment. Welcome here. And thank you for your kind words. I guess I do tend to stress a little bit about my lack of technical training in filming. I would like people to have a good experience but at the same time, this is a hobby, hence I don’t want to make UA-cam’ing stressful. I do appreciate some constructive criticism because hopefully I can improve on a few things. I have to say that it actually is fun to do this and I wanted to stay that way.
I agree with dendee1148 - I think the wonderful natural lighting in your home is very flattering to you & your surroundings, & calming to view. Just found you a couple of hours ago, watched your 9 tips for good living video first. Your manner & content are what's important. If you decide to film at night, you will have more choices to make. I'm 79 (how did THAT happen? - still 37 in my mind) & love my rim soup bowl for pasta, salad, soup, stew ... Keep going ;-)
Loved this video and would love to see what other yummy meals you prepare using your air fryer (with temp and cooking time included please :)
Thank you for your lovely comment. I will definitely have more cooking videos in the future. This one was really hard for me to do. Making videos is a completely new thing to me and making a cooking video is actually a lot harder than I thought.
you used one more bowl than I would, lol.....I use what ever bowl I've made the salad in, and add the protein to it. New subscriber here!
Lol, I am so laughing at this. I have been known to like literally buy salad in a bag. Pour the dressing into the bag and eat the salad out of the bag. Clearly, I would not do that in front of UA-cam. The comments would be hilarious. Thank you so much for subscribing and I really appreciate you taking time out and leaving a comment.
Wow. Nice. We are equal on this. I use almost all these ingredients including Diesel protein. lol. Great!
I am also small 5’1”
Love bowls too. Not a plate person.
Your experience with Philippine food shows perfectly in this video especially for your lunch. You are talented in cooking and making videos ❤
Loved this so much! Thank you for some great ideas!
Thank you so much for watching my video and welcome here. And also thank you for leaving a comment. I have a lot more videos planned for the future.
Loved how simple your meals are. As someone in my senior yrs and being only 5’1” I tend to not eat large and focus on healthy simple meals as well. Looking forward to following your meal plans in the future. 😊🥗
I’m also 5’ and I don’t eat big meals, also eat my first meal between 10 & 11, you’re recipes are similar to what I eat
This by 2nd video. It was just what I needed. I'm 5'1" 71yo still a Canadian but live in USA from 5yo. I'm going to work on my diet to lose weight. Love your suggestions, and will buy a air fryer soon. Question -- What olive oil do you use, there are so many choices, and price doesn't mean it's good. I like tofu but don't know how to cook it. Recipes would be great as mentioned in comment area. Thank you and new subbie.💙💚💛
I use the olive oil from Costco. It’s actually pretty good. The brand is called Terra Delyssa. But any good quality olive is fine. I use avocado oil for my stir fry.
I applaud your choice of Wüsthof knife!
I am a lefty and knives pretty much humble me! Never know what hand to hold it with…my brain does not get it.
Yay! I was hoping to find “solo living meal prep” on your new channel & hope you’ll keep ‘em coming! I’ve never had an air fryer but Id like to learn more about how it works and clean up, to see if it’s something I’d use. Right now, I use a toaster oven, microwave, or stovetop for most of my cooking. I just bought my first tofu and need more detail on how to prepare it. There were so many different kinds to choose from. I think I got the extra firm.
Like you, I love, love, love coffee! I don’t usually get hungry until after my morning coffee time, around 9 or 10am. My “Mr. Coffee” is at least 10 yrs old and I program it to start brewing at 6am. The delicious aroma is so wonderful to wake up to and makes me feel like there’s another person in the kitchen making it (tee hee). I drink a large glass of water first, then settle down with a cup of coffee, electric cup warmer by my side, and sit next to a big window where I can see people out walking their dogs (or themselves), and where squirrels and birds are chasing each other around. I enjoy the view, sip my coffee, and gently ease into another day of “simple living”.
I do lots of different things- when the urge strikes, and at my leisure. And I am grateful for having the luxury to live a life that’s simple, tranquil, & peaceful.
Back to meals, after breakfast, my other meal times vary greatly depending on where I am and what I’m doing. I try not to eat anything after 7pm (to avoid acid reflux🙄).
Love your subject matter, and I’ll be watching for more of your retirement lifestyle videos!
Oh thank you so much and thanks for leaving such a great comment. There will definitely be more recipe and cooking videos. I think it’s hard sometimes just cooking for one person. And also a lot of retired folks just have a tough time scaling down their cooking to one or two people because they’re used to cooking for a family.
Love the foodie video..I would not be able to use the recipes as I am reducing my chronic inflammation and a lot of the foods you are using are not suitable.. that said loads of great points..
I have had MS for.20 years and only just found the diet link information 😮
New sub! I'm 3 to 5 years from retiring and can't wait. Thanks for sharing what I eat in a day and the recipes. I especially like the tofu recipe and never thought to put in an air fyer, so great idea. I hope you post more what I eat in a day and financial advice videos.
Thats actually very balanced and normal size of food
I just found your channel and love it. I also live in Canada but near Toronto. At 58, I am still working but planning to retire in 2-3 years. Your videos are so helpful.
Hey, thanks for saying hi and stopping by my channel and watching my video. I love when fellow Canadians. Find my little space here I have to say retirement is so much fun. I’ve had people say to me that I would be bored and I’m still trying to figure out when that’s gonna happen!
I agree!! I’m from Manitoba, Canada and love when I find and can support other small Canadian content creators 😊🇨🇦
Hi! Very glad I found your channel! I am 47, and trying to set myself up for a better second act than my first. Can you explain Breakfast 1 and Breakfast 2? How far apart do you space them?
I eat them about two hours apart. A smoothie just does not fill me up for long so I have a little extra a while after.
I subscribed to support your channel. Love your videos.
Thank you so much. I’m hoping to meet a group of great people through this little venture of mine. I tend to be a bit of a homebody and an introvert so this is a great opportunity to expand my social horizons lol.
Wow, your lunch is like Korean style. We Koreans like to eat dubu(tofu in Korean) with soy sauce, sesame oil, a bit of chopped spring onion, and some red pepper powder^^
Yes…exactly. I love Korean food, Chinese, Thai….any kind of Asian food! I often eat that type of bowl for breakfast 😂😂
Very similar to my life except slightly different food but walk at least 40thousand steps per week enough for me im64soon porridge no sugar in the morning then eat what I want a stone overweight but fine with it don't diet
I eat just like you do. I no longer eat until i'm stuffed. A lot of intuìtive eating. I feel so much better!
All these dishes look amazing and easy to prepare. Thanks for sharing. I have been considering an air fryer.
My dr told me 1200 calories. I’m 5’5 and gained 60 pounds. I was doing over 2000 calories because of my soda habit. This is helpful
Yes, soda can be a calorie monster!
@@smallretiredlifesoda and alcohol too! But everything in moderation ❤
Everything looked so fresh and good. What kind of air fryer do you use? I'm a new subscriber and this is my second video of yours. Love it!!!!
I just use a Cosori, the popular brand sold on Amazon. It’s pretty good. I have a small size.
Thanks for sharing your daily eats. What about sleep amounts and exercise, again thank you
Definitely so important. I will cover in my q&a video coming soon.
All you're meals look very tasty and I love those pretty little bowls🌿
I like to put my meals in a bowl too.
Love that type of simple foods I’m trying to figure out some menus like these.
.
Stay tuned!
Love your videos, so helpful for those of us coming up to retirement 😊
…I think I’ve found my doppleganger! Are you of Finnish ancestry? Marrimekko gives it away! We are the same height, age, single, stage in life ( I had to retire as I had a cancer diagnosis last year - all going well though), don’t like eating in the morning and think everything tastes better with chop sticks! Love your food tips - I have been struggling for inspiration. Glad UA-cam sent me to your channel. Thankyou 😊
lol not of Finnish ancestry but am from what used to be Czechoslovakia, then became the Czech Republic and now is Czechia…I think 😂 when we lived there my parents had the typical 60s mid-century teak furniture, most of it from Denmark. So I guess I have a preference for that Scandi look. And I like things spare.
Second video recommended. First was the laid off video. I'm subbing as I'm looking forward to watching your videos and for your channel to grow. Cheers.
Oh thank you so much. And thank you for leaving a comment. Honestly I’m flying by the seat of my pants here. I have never ever filmed a video before except for tiny little short ones for Instagram until I posted that first UA-cam video like four weeks ago.
@smallretiredlife When I watched your first video, it was at 1.4k you are almost to 4k. I think you're doing great!!
That’s all really healthy
Fun to watch 😊 Hope you keep making vids
Thank you. I plan on making more videos. I’m really enjoying it.
Great vlog, so tempting. I agree just love bowls, not plates.🐞
This is off topic -but can you tell me the brand and name of your cabinet pulls? Love your kitchen!
Oof, I have no idea, I just picked the style and my contractor found them in a local cabinet store. I know IKEA sells similar. They are truly nothing special. There is a brand called Top Knob that carries the same pull and it’s their Mercer Collection - I think that may be what I have. Home Depot has a an almost identical pull by a company called Richelieu. Mine are in a brushed silver nickel.
@@smallretiredlife Thanks for all the info -I will take a look. On the uppers you don’t find they look upside down?
I’ve never fixed tofu before. There used to be a restaurant in my town lovely tofu salad, but they went out of business. I’d like to try your recipe in the air fryer. Could you tell me what temperature you set it on and how long you had it in the air fryer? I just found you today and you have a lovely channel. Keep doing what you’re doing.
I do the tofu in the air fryer at 400°F. I do it five minutes on one side, then flip it and another five minutes on the other side. So 10 minutes in total, hope that helps.
@@smallretiredlifethank you!
You only need 2000 calories if you're active and more than that if doing hard workouts
Definitely a lot of factors involved with calorie consumption!
Great job!! Looks excellent
Thank you!🙏
Hi newbie here, where did you buy the bee pollen thanks 😊
Here in Calgary at Safeway in Aspen. It’s a local bee pollen and Safeway has local sellers every now and then.
@@smallretiredlife Hi thanks, can’t see me getting there, forgot to mention I live in England 🏴😊
@@suerolfe9451lol! A bit far!
@@smallretiredlife indeed it is 😂
🥰🥰🥰
Hi Raina, love, love, love the ways you say how it is.
Love it when you create your own breakfast ideas.
Very simple.
That tofu yum, yum.😊
Thank you so much. The tofu is lovely. I’m not a vegetarian but I absolutely love tofu. Does that make me a weirdo?
❤
Microwave & Refridgerator
yum
Hope you get to try some of these recipes out.
Just found your channel. I really relate and already follow much of what you do. I really enjoyed the recipes. You gave me some new meal ideas to try. I’m a bowl person too and cook with my air fryer. I’ve subscribed. Thank you.
Awesome! Thank you!
I love your recipes. Please share more of them!!! I’m single, 55 and hate grocery shopping 😂
Coming up in the next video 😉
Where do u get the bee pollen?
I get mine at a local Safeway store. It’s a local producer who makes it. But you can get Bee Pollen on Amazon or a store may be like Whole Foods, or a health food store of some kind. The one I get is made by a Canadian company called Beelicious.
@@smallretiredlife Ty ❤️
I was just thinking about needing new ideas for lunch (I found your channel today even though I’m still employed). Great video
I’m so happy that you found some use in this video. I will do more food videos in the future.
Nice healthy choices! I've been thinking of getting an air fryer - it seems very versatile!
Thank you. I LOVE my air fryer. It’s perfect for one or two people and the food comes out roasted perfectly.
I have one and love it - so worth the investment!
That food looks like I'm-on-my-way-out rations.
😂😂 I am a pretty small person!
Do you just swallow the bee pollen or chew it up?
I chew it…I love the taste.
62?.. wow
Why wouldn't U just use the salad bowl that U mixed in?
Lol I know what you mean. Believe me I’ve actually bought bagged salad, poured the dressing into the bag and eaten my salad out of the bag. But, plating my food is engrained into me by my mother, so I try and do that on a more regular basis.
enjoyed your video, looks like you might be into minimalism
lol, I don’t think I would call myself a minimalist, but I definitely don’t like a lot of stuff. I guess when I think of a minimalist, I think of someone who lives in an empty room and that’s definitely not me… I have way too many plants! I I definitely don’t like clutter and I hate having full cupboards. I like empty cupboards.
Are you a vegetarian 🥗
Oups didn’t finish video lol saw chicken
@@nancyelizabeth8364no I am not. I probably could be as I don’t eat meat very often but I love chicken and fish!
Love this video!
Thank you so much for watching and for leaving a comment 🙏
