    ABOUT A TO ZEN LIFE
    Along my journey to let go of 30 years of clutter, I accidentally became a minimalist and it was life-changing.
    Before, I was an emotional hoarder with nothing but the clutter from lost loved ones - and $25,000 of debt - to my name. Now I have a beautiful home in Europe, a happy family, live debt-free, and - best of all - wake up to a life that I’m EXCITED to live every day.
    My mission is to help you conquer your clutter and simplify YOUR way to a happier and better life. HERE'S OUR STORY: atozenlife.com...

      Marissa, my husband and I just moved, too. We bought our Empty Nest Home. We're unpacking, putting together new and old furniture and getting the house ready for all three of our adult children and 2 grandchildren to come visit! (One lives out of state with her kids and husband, another lives in the UK with her husband and one lives about 50 miles away with her partner.)
      My husband and I are trying to stop being Messy Pile People. We're making sure we clean the kitchen and breakfast room after every meal, cleaning the floors every week kitchen almost every day in the kitchen, vacuuming twice a week if I can and even vacuuming our furniture so our house is so much cleaner than our old house where we raised our 3 kids and we fell behind on keeping the house as clean as it should have been.
      When we moved we filled a dumpster with... stuff we didn't need and still spent another year getting rid of things we didn't need, donating, upcycling, recycling, etc.
      I saw you with your green dry floor and wall Swiffer! I was jealous. Mine was lost in our move. 😔 I have a new Swiffer Power mop and I can use other things on long sticks for dry mopping. (In other words I'm not buying an other green dry floor Swiffer.)
      The hardest part of trying to keep the new house clean is trying to persuade my husband to take off his shoes when he comes in the house. "I'm going right back out!" That doesn't prevent dirt and heaven knows what from taking a ride on his shoes to mess up the house, though. I keep putting his shoes in the mud room and replacing them with slippers I bought him. It's not working yet, but I'm hoping.
      You're doing a great job! Keep up the good work.

    I've been cleaning houses for 15 years with my grandma who has been cleaning houses her whole adult life. Her trick for wood floors/surfaces is to first clean them, mix warm water with 1 tsp vinegar and 1 tsp dishsoap to remove dirt- and dry with cloth right away, then follow after dry with Murphys Oil then dry again after Murphys. That way the oil doesn't trap the dirt under it resulting in a dull looking wood.
    Love your new house and how you described your process to us!

    I use Murphy oil soap on my cabinets( especially all wood cabinets). It cleans and helps put some moisture back into the wood. I’ve seen WD40 used on wood cabinets. It also adds moisture back into the wood. A little smelly, but it dissipates. I dust down walls regularly. It really makes a difference. I also use a steamer. I really like how it cleans. Like you stated you need additional pads! You are doing great! It’s rewarding work! 😊

  • @silmuffin86
    @silmuffin86 2 дні тому +4

    Just a tip: first clean what's high up that you need a ladder for, then clean below, otherwise dust and dirt will fall down on the already cleaned areas. Also, the best cleaner for real wood cabinets and floors is Murphy soap. And it smells great! I used to buy that pink method cleaner in England and I liked it, but Murphy's soap smells better imo

    Today I clean the bed, bedside table and windows in our master bedroom. It’s zone 4 of flylady. Good luck with your new home looks really nice so far. For the kitchen cabinets, I recommend washing them out with apple cider vinegar, then placing baking paper on the surfaces (for protection), sprinkling with baking soda and leaving it in for up to 7 days. Then all unpleasant odors etc. should be gone. Greetings from cologne Andy💪🏻

I used dish packs, a wonderful way to move your clothes from one place to another. Old English Scratch Cover is a great oil for old wood cabinets. It moisturizes and makes any flaws or damage pretty much disappear. It comes in light and dark colors. I use that once a year or so to make the wood look like new again. For in-between cleans I use Therapy Clean Wood Cleaner and Polish, it really makes the wood look revived.
    I would also recommend never using Murphy Oil Soap on any wood, it leaves a waxy filmy buildup over time that cannot be removed, and creates problems if you ever want to refinish wood that it was used on. I live in a 1950s house with a lot of old wood and have lived and learned!

    Oof, I remember the big pre move in clean from our move in 20 years ago! You're a power house. I hope the steam mop came with a warning not to use it on your hardwood flooring. Today is a desk day for me. My big weekend task was harvesting all our tomatoes before blight overtook them, then making and freezing green tomato salsa and sauteeing green tomatoes to use in casseroles (wherever I use celery). And every flat surface is covered with semi ripe tomatoes, so cleaning will happen as they ripen and I have time to process the red tomatoes.

    If the cabinets don't smell good after airing out, vinegar and baking soda can absorb the smell. Slugs crawl to the beer in a low pan or dish and to drink it and drown. Disgusting to clean up but it works. I love Swedish clothes! Fun day of cleaning and organizing!

    Hi, Marissa. I cleaned along with you today! I really enjoy your channel. Although, I am not a minimalist, your discussions on other videos about breaking away from the constant bombardment of consumerist culture have resonated with me. Thank you for reminding us all to value our family and friends over stuff. I can offer advice on the garden slugs. Beer does work, but it has to be in a container the slugs are able to crawl into. I found Haxnicks Slug-Buster containers at a local garden center. They really work with the beer in the lower portion of the container and the accompanying lid sits on top. Good luck with your garden and enjoy your new home with your family!

There really is no other good way to do it. The IKEA utensil holder, wth?! That's a fail, I don't know what they were thinking with that. RE: the quartz countertops, you also want to use something under a slow cooker, etc for the same reason. Anything that might be concentrated heat for an extended period of time.

      It was over 100 degrees most of the days they were working here, it was CRAZY hot!!! Maybe that's why they did it inside? They did all of the cutting inside, for sure.

    Very nice video, I love your house and I am so glad that you did not change the tiles on the kitchen walls.
    I would also recommend to start top down with the cleaning, as someone else suggested. Even dust tends to "fall down" and then spread again on surfaces. And I would use a vacuum cleaner as the first step. Not sure, how many of these swiffer wipes filled your litter in the end... 😉
    One thing that hit me by surprise was throwing away food like noodles and cereals, but I am sure you had your reasons.
    Now I am looking forward to see the final house tour 😊

    Beer traps can work for slugs, but there is an eco safe slug bait you can get at any garden centre or big box store that is much easier to use and extremely effective. You sprinkle the little pellets around the target plants. Safers brand. It kills slugs but won't harm the birds etc that eat the dead slugs. And in the long run, you can research varieties that are more slug resistant.

    So excited to see you guys move in! The floors turned out amazing! Seeing all that wood dust brought me back to our remodeling days. We had to gut our kitchen and hired someone to finishing the drywall work. We put up plastic and a sheet but the drywall dust went everywhere. We had to live in our home while all that work was being done. So I was cleaning constantly, even when they were on a lunch break. I couldn’t take the build up of it accumulating. So I swept and mopped every chance I got. 😂

    I have a steam cleaner I like. But occasionally I literally get on my hands and knees with a brush and scrub all of the little nooks and crannies. We have lived in places that it changed the color of the floor. Also I vacuum everything. Swiffer’s are good but I like to suck up as much dust as possible first.

    • @AtoZenLife

    The living room curtains: you might try setting them outside in the fresh air. Also, can they be put in the washing machine with oxyclean or something similar?

      Totally try washing your curtains in the washer. Dry cleaning them every time gets expensive and if they don’t make it through the washer then you can get some affordable ones that can be washed in the machine from Ikea.

    Love your new place but don't envy you the high ceilings, I'm too old for that. A great tip to work in a clockwise direction, but think about starting from the top and working down because otherwise dust and dirt can fall on your newly cleaned areas. You must have been exhausted after all the cleaning, packing and moving but it all looks so nice now. Enjoy.

    My kitchen is small, but I organized it by zone so I am confused by your choices. By the sink, I put all of my dishes, glasses, cups and silverware near the sink/ dishwasher for easy unloading and putting stuff away. Right now, you have your dishes on one end of the kitchen but the glasses and silverware are on the other. I guess you do not mind taking all of those extra steps but it would drive me crazy when setting the table.

    • @AtoZenLife
      @AtoZenLife  3 дні тому

      Usually I would agree with you, but these dishes are a bit heavy so I decided to go with the long cabinet where I could spread them out over several shelves instead of stacking them on 2 and risk bending/breaking the wood. I love them otherwise, so that's my way of making it work without having to declutter and buy new dishes. ✌️
