  • We just got the gimbal for our 3D Robotics Solo quadcopter. The difference between the opening (non-gimbal) aerial footage and the stabilized video is remarkable. It's the most stable drone footage ever! We demonstrate both Orbit Mode and Follow Me with Orbit mode. Amazing!
    Not only was Mom up visiting us, but our friends Jason & Nikki Wynn came along too, with their DJI Phantom. Follow Nikki & Jason at GoneWithTheWynns.com
    This footage was shot using the following gear and settings:
    3DR Solo
    3DR 3-axis gimbal (except for the first 2 minutes or so)
    Balanced props
    GoPro Hero 4 Silver
    1080P / 60 FPS / Medium
    BlurFix Air ND8 Filter (2 nickels as counterweights - 1 side & 1 rear)
    Marco Polo recovery system
    Processed in Final Cut Pro on a 15" MacBook Pro

      +Gone with the Wynns Thanks! We're learning a lot... next time, we'd keep it low for that exact reason, and slow down the speed of the orbit a little. Too fun! Hope you're getting re-charged down there in WA. :)

      Small world indeed! Nikki & Jason were hanging out with us and my Mom for a while last summer, and we wanted to share this footage, but it wasn't really RV stuff, so here it is! Glad you found it anyway. :)

      Sorry for the delayed reply! Just saw your note. This was shot in Agassiz, British Columbia, Canada, about 90 minutes east of Vancouver, in the Fraser Valley. That tallest mountain in the distance is 7,000' Mt Cheam, which we have hiked to the top of! :)

      This was actually my very first time using the gimbal, and it didn't take me long after this to really learn how well it can perform. Check out this video on my other channel to get a better feel for what great footage it can get:

    does this have terrain avoidance in follow me mode? Looking for something that would do this under the canopy of a forest and avoid the trees while following me

    • @OuiRV
      @OuiRV  8 років тому

      +Three Percent Patriot Definitely not! We looked at a lot of drones in this general price range, and are not aware of any that have terrain avoidance. The problem with flying low under trees is the potential to lose GPS signal, which would then allow the drone to drift into them.

    • @OuiRV
      @OuiRV  8 років тому

      It sure can! And a lot more too. They've recently added a whole series of new features and flight abilities to the app. Solo rocks!

    I am loking for a drone. Do you recomend the 3dr solo in october 2017? (That is the month when i could buy it)
    I already have a gopro hero 4 black so it makes the drone looks cheaper.
    The only thing that I don't like is the portability of the drone, the 3dr backpack and the drone are a bit big. It would make dificult to travel with the drone
    Sorry for my english, I am from Argentina

    • @OuiRV
      @OuiRV  6 років тому +1

      So sorry for the delayed response. I just saw your comment & question. We do love our 3DR Solo, but we cannot recommend buying one. 3DR has stopped making it, and no longer provides support. Our next drone will almost certainly be a DJI Phantom. If you're willing to take a chance on a drone that's no longer supported, you can indeed get very good deals on the Solo.

    How did you do orbit and follow me at the same time?

    • @OuiRV
      @OuiRV  8 років тому

      +Jonathan Novotny Once you're in Follow mode, click either the orbit left or orbit right button at the bottom of the app on your mobile device (we're using an iPad mini).

    What do you mean with 'Balanced props' in the description?

    • @OuiRV
      @OuiRV  8 років тому

      +Fernando Siller Props come from the factory reasonably well balanced, but not perfectly. If you want to further improve the smoothness of flight, and therefore the video, balancing the props helps a lot. I use this one: amzn.to/2aDUuME

    • @fernandosiller5325
      @fernandosiller5325 8 років тому

    • @OuiRV
      @OuiRV  8 років тому

      +Fernando Siller You just buy one prop balancer and use it to balance all of the props. It's a great tool to have.

    Wondering does it work with a hero 5 or a hero session?

    • @kevinmiller1257
      @kevinmiller1257 7 років тому

      I don't believe a gimbal has been made yet to support those models. Once Karma came out, I think that really stalled GoPro's continued support for the Solo and likewise developer's desire to produce a compatible mount for future GoPros. After a quick e-mail with 3DR as well as seeing a presentation with 3DR's CEO, it looks like they're expanding more into the software development for their products on a more professional level rather than a hobbyist level. Probably more information than you want, but it sounds like hardware is about to transfer big time to the 3rd party developers. Plus, seeing as how GoPro is pursuing their own sUAS (even with a less than stellar launch), I'm thinking Solo and GoPro's relationship might stall around the Hero 4 cameras (session excluded).
      Personally, I was stoked to get my Solo a number of months ago. I'm still pretty happy with it. However, GoPro's image quality from far away (in my opinion) leaves a muddier image than I was hoping for. (You can see this in shots of trees/landscape.) If I had the money to spend, I'd strongly consider the Inspire 2 coming out. The sheer fact that you can change lenses, with some pro-level glass is pretty awesome.

    how it follows me? i have to keep controller in my hand all the time? will it follow my phone instead controller?

    • @OuiRV
      @OuiRV  8 років тому

      +Jayesh Patel It follows the mobile device's GPS signal, but the phone (or iPad) has to be close enough to the controller to maintain WiFi connection to it. Since I keep my iPad on the controller, it works like a charm.

    Great video! How do you record with the go pro 4 silver? I only see record on the 3dr solo app on my ipad mini a red recording button but that's only a vid feed to my ipad. Also you say 2 nickels, but the gimbal actually comes with weights. And how are you actually having them stay connected to the gimbal? I'm going to look for the filter in your description and get a prop balancer this weekend. Thanks again for sharing a great video hope I have my videos looking simular Cheers.

    • @OuiRV
      @OuiRV  8 років тому

      +moggie215 Until you have the gimbal, the red record button only records to the
      iPad, and will not trigger the camera to record. The gimbal weights are
      perfect when there's no extra weight added. Even though the filter is
      light, it does still add weight, which will make the gimbal motors work
      hard to stay level. A nickel on the back frame of the gimbal, directly
      behind the camera, and one all the way on the far side of the gimbal,
      away from the camera, happened to be the perfect weight to allow the
      gimbal to stay put in any position with the filter on the camera,
      meaning that it is balanced. I used little pieces of industrial-strength
      velcro to hold them on. Works like a charm. I'll post photo in the 3DR
      users forum in a day or two and link back to them here.
