- I HATE RUNNING!!! No really! But here I am! I need a new challenge for the short term so I thought I'd try running. This video is my third run ever.
I am doing a 5K "Fun Run and Walk" at Henry Coe Park on Sept 8. Show up! I can walk 5K in an hour so I figure it's a good start for me to try a run. Can't get much easier.
I've been thinking about running a little for my workouts so I signed up before I could change my mind.

Hey mike! Congrats! 5k’s are tough at the start, but get easier as practice increases. I saw some other folks comment about the knees and they definitely take a beating with running. I successfully summited mt. Whitney on the 30th! I was doing 5k’s and hiking cardio as my practice for the summit. By the end of the day (and still today) my knees are very very sore. They were the first thing to start giving me a tough time. Although I went when there’s still snow and ice and you’re going once all that nonsense has melted (good call), I would say strength conditioning with squats, lunges, and dead lifts will help a lot. Hiking Whitney is essentially thousands of mini squats, so strength training will help with that. Anyways- I was excited to tell you that we made it! We had a friend with us who is a professional mountaineer and certified guide, so he was able to navigate us through the chute and glissading down. It took us 7 hours the first day and 17 hours the second. The folks doing it in 24 hours are so impressive. They did the entire thing in 17 hours! Anyways- I’m excited to see your journey progress! Cheers!
Hey nice job! Great to hear you made it, and safely! I haven't been able to run much all week so we'll see how the 5K goes. I'll give it my best shot then try another one. Thanks for letting me know how it went! 👍💪😃
Congrats. I just did my first 10km trail race. 1 year ago I wasn't able to run very much. Wish you all the best.
Thank you, much appreciated, and nice going too!
This is so exciting! You will have such a great time. Please, though, protect your knees, speaking from experience here. I look forward to watching your run at the park 😊
My knees are my main concern. Something's still going on. I used the foam roller on my quads and IT band today and it helped a lot. I love and hate my foam roller!
My knees are fine except for that weird "whatever" that happened at Castle Rock that day. Anyways we shall see!
Congrats Mike! When I was approaching 50, and my elderly father in law heard I had jogged 50m slowly in an effort to get fit again. He said "I'll enroll you in a half Marathon in October!" Yeah, so that happened, and I had to jog 100m, then 200m, then a bit more every day until I got there. But I did get there. Keep going, it doesn't ever get easier, but you'll surprise yourself with how much faster you get. Keep going!
Thanks for the encouragement! I figure if my brother Matt can do 250 miles I should be able to get at least a few miles in LOL.

I thought I replied to this? Thanks for the encouragement! I'll do the best I can and keep working at it. Been working too much to run :(
@@outsidewithmike I have no idea why it posted twice
@@nationalparksprincess3216 Oh that's what it was haha
Ey nice. I'm still getting used to it. Mostly jogging on the flats & downhills. I need to buckle down and start training more. Sorry I just saw the email lol. My bad. I don't think I'll be able to make it. I'm busy working weekends these days. Sounds like fun though. Hope it's not brutal hot.
:) Should be fine at 8:30 am. Hope so. It's a long drive for a short race. I'll bring my GoPr...I mean DJI camera!!!
@@outsidewithmike Cool. I'll text you when I'm done in the afternoon and see if you're still around.
@@rodoutdoors Cool! Ya I think I'll do the race then relax for an hour, then think about hiking. I have a few routes mapped out. Everything from Hunting Hollow is STEEP! Never been there.
@@outsidewithmike Yeah the climbs are brutal from Hunting Hollow. That's where I start for most of my trips. Willson Camp has water and I like stopping there before going further up.
Redfern Pond has bass.
The race is probably on the Hunting Hollow Rd which is pretty flat. It gets pretty hot there. Not a lot of shade.
@@rodoutdoors Yep, it goes up and back that road. The 10K goes up twice as far, then turns around. I haven't run much lately because of work but I'll do what I can there. I may wimp out on the hike haha.
Run, Mike, Run!!!
Life is like a box of chocolates!
New camera is pretty steady either way!
I did see some jittery stuff in some scenes, so I think handheld will be best, but running with a camera in hand is awkward. I'll do both I guess. Good to hear from you, I need to check your newest vid, been working my butt off.
@@outsidewithmike Keep at it!
(follows you...sportively... in an electric golf cart...with a shade canopy)
You can be my pacer! Good to hear from you man! Fish on!
@@outsidewithmike yeah, I've been getting some new stuff to test out from the lure company friend of mine. You ever seen a 2 inch color shifting soft plastic shrimp on a.... size 8 EWG hook? I have... 🙃
