Can it sleep and continue your game where you left it like the steam deck? This feature is very important and i dont see any youtubers mentioning this.
The main 3 upgrades for me is the RAM, the use of 2280 storage and the second USB C port. I actually love how lightweight the OG Ally is and I don't want anything heavier.
I'm with you on this one... RMA process is way better with Valve and I really think that the steam deck 2 will perform great at incredible APU efficiency... Most companies arent waiting for technology to catch up with what they want to do but Valve is. Love my steam deck OLED to death. I also have the Rog Ally but I find it's performance increase not worth the abysmal battery life it has... It's a great device when plugged in so I use it as a PC instead of a handheld for that reason
Power efficiency is crucial. Getting the most performance with the fewest watts possible. So far, only VALVe aims for power efficiency, erryone else continues with just raw power and high specs The Ally and other generic PC handhelds only surpass the Deck/OLED's performance at 15W and higher. At that point, it's not even wirthwhile anymore With an 80Wh battery, I honestly think Ally will be neck and neck with OLED Deck at best. Mainly in lighter games
Mine disappeared then reappear after bios update it's on and off sometimes everything works properly other times gotta restart it constantly until it works properly.
Got to hold the ally and legion for the first time at Best Buy and I gotta say the ally felt real nice. The legion was a real clunker and I couldn’t help but press all eleven buttons it had on the right grip. The ally was light and reminded me more of a switch which I prefer
Legion go is more of a table/desk device imo. I like the fact that I can sit the thing down (even on me), and hold the controllers separately, especially in bed or on the couch. It is significantly heavier/bulkier than the ally
@@SplendidNinja I agree. I will say probably the only big downside to the legion is my legion go’s controllers are slowly getting wobbly just from using them. I hope there’s an easy fix to it
Cool device but decided to get a gaming laptop couldnt pass up the deal they had on best buy in my area. Got a Lenovo Loq amd ryzen 7 7840HS with a 4060, 8gb of ram and 512gb for $650 excellent condition open box. Upgraded ram to 32gb and ssd 2tb so around 750 in total.
80 watt is a game changer for these x86 handhelds. Glad Asus is designing and pushing the market forward to the boutique companies can use their tech lol. Always crack up when you list settings: Running at 1080p! fsr set to absolute dog shit mode and yeah wow getting 80 fps!
As some others mentioned....the SD Card is the biggest issue as that being next to the heating vent was the problem that made the Rog ALLY the wrong choice almost every time.
1. Ally/X and other generic PC handhelds only surpass the Steam Deck/OLED's performance at 15W and above 2. For example: whatever takes the OLED 6W to play, would take the Ally/X like 10W to handle at same settings (Varies between games tho) 3. With an 80Wh battery, it's neck and neck. Divide 80 by 10 (AllyX) and 50 by 6 (OLED). OLED still has slightly more battery. But this varies between games 4. I think in lighter titles, Ally X might surpass OLED's overall playtime solely on that 80Wh 5. Back to "1.", if my math is correct, that should be reversed. The Deck has to pull more watts to achieve same performance as Ally/X past that 15W mark. With an 80Wh battery vs OLED's 50Wh, the Ally X might actually be better overall with performance AND playtime This will be the first time anyone has actually brought something to the table over the Steam Deck/OLED Of course, this applies mainly with demanding games such as AAAs, which are about 0.01% of the entire PC library Depending on wattage consumption, Ally X might even surpass OLED playtime in lighter titles solely off the 80Wh battery. Its subpar power efficiency wouldn't be a concern Of course, this is comparing the devices using the same exact in game settings. You'll likely get much less playtime at 1080p120 on an 80Wh compared to 800p90 on a 50Wh with Deck's power efficiency in the average game Controls, ergonomics, OS, price, display, convenience, and power efficiency are the main deciding factors between OLED Deck and Ally X now, which obviously Steam Deck/OLED is miles superior in still It's no longer a 1-sided massacre with the Steam Deck/OLED anymore, we're getting technical now. 80Wh battery alone can make a give a bad handheld a huge advantage over competition. Could you imagine the Steam Deck OLED with an 80Wh? That'd completely level the entire handheld market equivalent to that of the Tsar bomb lol
Barely any. The original ROG Ally was not RAM constrained. Expect barely any performance uplift from the original ROG Ally. The Ally X exists to ameliorate RMA rates caused by defective ROG Ally components, such as the micro SD card reader. The Ally 2 will release as soon as AMD produces enough poorly binned Strix Halo APUs to ship them in sufficient quantities as Z2 Extreme APUs.
If i buy this , i would probably lock everything at 60 and use 60hz maybe even turn down the rez to 900p even. To extend the battery life even further. Ofcourse good video very informative
You don't need to wait the chip is the same performance will be almost the same with maybe slightly better performance due to the ram upgrade, games will be more stable and it has double the battery life and it has a SSD ungrade
@@beau-urnsexcept it's really not. Didn't realize double battery life, 8 more gigs of ram, extra usb-c port, bigger SSD, better ergonomics was the same
Yea they can keep it honestly. It’s always on sale here in Canada for 699 and they can’t get rid of them. This new one is on pre order at best buy right now for $1099 plus 13% tax…..hell no
Had I not owned multiple gaming laptops from ASUS I wouldn’t mess around with this but…since it’s the second version of it I’m confident this the one. I owned a Zephyrus M 2070 for 5 years no issues, gave it to my partner after I upgraded to a ROG Strix with a 4070. I like Asus, they cool.
Once we get some full reviews and stress tests to check for issues, I plan to sell my Steam Deck and Gaming PC to minimize to just this. Pretty exciting.
I'm deeply disappointed with Asus’s handling of the SD card malfunction. Despite being aware of the defect, they chose not to issue a recall, leaving many consumers, including myself, in a difficult position. The introduction of a new SKU seemed to overshadow the need for addressing this widespread problem. The responsibility was unfairly placed on customers to navigate the cumbersome RMA process. Their lack of communication and accountability has left me with a product that no longer meets my expectations, and I find myself regretting the purchase.
The SD card readers were rated for a certain heat. People ran their shit in turbo mode, cooking it... Because it's a PC and you should never use auto modee. Set your unit up properly and that's not an issue
@@fillerbunnyninjashark271Lmfao! Stop making things up. Even if that were true(Which it's not) the features on the device should work without cooking your SD card.
@@fillerbunnyninjashark271 Mine still failed with a custom fan curve. I set the fan to reach 100% at a lower temp. There has also a post about ASUS using hardware they knew failed at high temps. If that hardware didn’t fall in line with the max temps of the Ally then they shouldn’t have picked them.
They also moved the right thumbstick and face buttons to match the xbox controller location. I'm glad the thumbsticks are tighter and have an Xbox rubber match as well.
Fyi Legion Go you can buy their extended warranty, and they also offer ADP (accidental drop protection) for a reasonable price unlike the competition...

im excited, more ram more gaming power, more watts, more higher quality gaming, sometimes the PSU matters as well, like laptops for example, i dont buy any laptop if it dont have atleast a 300 watt psu because high quality gaming wont be pushed to the limits . And not to mention this new one has wifi 6e .
you've gotta test more demanding game than these...try games that the original rog ally struggled with, for example, horizon forbidden west? senua 2? the new elden ring DLC? avatar? ghost of tsushima? re4 remake?
What's very smart is they put in 24gb of ram ,so you can dedicated 8 gb of ram and still have 16gb of ram with 8gm of vram. Awsome on there part . I will get this or the LegionGo. I reallt hate my steamdeck it's mediocre and runs games like trash . Compared to windows counter parts.
I really love the original Rog. My wife got me the best model on sale for $400. This is nice but for the price I'm going to wait. I just expected more upgrades than just ram and a battery.
Same! The Ally X felt more like they had to get a new product out ASAP to fix the OG. I don't think it's even been a year since the OG came out, and there's alrdy a new one The OG is a horribly designed handheld that literally damages itself. Ally X seems more like a quick fix/replacement than a 'mid gen refresh'
Its cool, but I agree, for 800 bucks you don't want to worry about the card reader. I own two Ally's, I got them a year apart, and both have the card reader issue. My other handhelds, Steam Deck, L-Go, MSI Claw, and the X2 Pro, don't have any issues. However, the L-Go can get hot and throttle the cards wright speed a bit. I just gave up on the Ally's card reader and installed a 2 TB M.2, called it day. However, I have cash to burn, I wouldn't buy a Rog Ally unless this is fixed if it's going to be your main and only hand held. I would get the Steam Deck, or the L-Go.
I've owned the Steam Deck original and ROG Ally original. I much preferred the ROG over the Deck due to it's more compact design and sound quality. However, what I did not like about the ROG original was for one, I found it sometime got scorching hot if it didn't go into standby. I mean it got so hot you couldn't hold it until it cooled down. The other thing I immensely disliked was its inability to save a game state when going into standby. I almost always had an issue jumping back into right where I left off when coming out of standby. Now I have the new Steam Deck and it's a dream on how well going in and out of standby works. I'll be getting the new Ally, but if putting it into standby was as bad as the original, then I'll be returning it and sticking with the Steam Deck.
I just want a comparison of the battery of OG Ally and the X. I have the OG and if I'm to upgrade to the X, I want to know whether the battery life is significantly better. This is a major selling point but Asus in their gracious wisdom are not letting any reviewers test this.
I have the OG Ally and I avoided the sdcard killing issue by just upgrading the stock M.2 to a 4tb stick with the adapter from Aliexpress. With the news of Asus being total asshats and shafting people by not honoring warranty repairs properly, I'm hesitant to invest in this model even though the upgraded battery does seem enticing despite my low tolerance to FOMO when it comes to these devices (I own both the LED and OLED Steam Decks btw). I'll wait and see how the early adopters fare out before deciding to fork over the money for this new model. Might get a good laugh out of the situation too...
Im most likely going to get this! But would love to see a video from you where you pair this with an eGPU. I also hope that with more handhelds like this coming out that we get more manufacturers make more eGPU variations even with NVIDIA graphics
I was torn between waiting for this, or get a Legion GO. I think the RMA/Customer support is what is keeping me away. So far, I've been enjoying my Legion GO but hope Asus gets it together!
Sticking with my Steam Deck. I love it. I'll be waiting for Steam Deck 2 before getting another handheld PC, or any PC for that matter. The Steam Deck has taken all of my PC gaming time.
My original Steam Deck just had its USB port broken, and I can't get anyone to try replacing it, so I was thinking about getting one of these. I like the idea of playing Starfield on the go, which my steam deck doesn't handle very well.
If you get your steam deck replaced you could try GeForce Now on the deck, not sure if starfield is on there but I play almost all my games at a stable 60fps with everything on high
As per the euro site, the X is 200 euro more than the Extreme, which seems a bit much without a CPU upgrade. I'd rather just wait for the next one. Current Ally is doing fine for me.
I really want a steam deck, but lack of tethering support makes me think a windows handheld might be better for me. Thinking of pre ordering one of these bad boys.
I think I was pretty lucky and didn’t have issues with the micro sd card slot with my ally. Still like the updated ally x, the battery life and storage upgrade.

If you dont have the original Ally, then it might be better to wait for this. Or, just wait and see if ASUS keeps their word that they improved their warranty and RMA policies after all the controversy😂😂😂
Can The APU even utilize that RAM in any meaningful way? Like Can I suddenly play something at 1440p instead of 1080p or more FPS or anything? Like if its just for OS and Bloatware, its pretty useless. This is a Handheld Console first, PC with Tasks second
Hopefully they fixed a lot of stuff. I sold my z1 extreme because neither the thumb sticks or triggers would calibrate, making it essentially useless for shooters and any rpg with a parry system.

I use hibernate mode on my Ally and it resumes my game with no issues.
I use hibernate with a desktop pc. Its a better solution but dont forget to save the game first.
What I love about ETA Prime…
He shows us all the goods and never gets into the drama on other tech YT.
The main 3 upgrades for me is the RAM, the use of 2280 storage and the second USB C port. I actually love how lightweight the OG Ally is and I don't want anything heavier.
Good for ps3 emulation.
Impressive how the progress is going in the handheld space....still gonna stick it out with my Streamdeck OLED.
So far, only VALVe aims for power efficiency, erryone else continues with just raw power and high specs
The Ally and other generic PC handhelds only surpass the Deck/OLED's performance at 15W and higher. At that point, it's not even wirthwhile anymore
With an 80Wh battery, I honestly think Ally will be neck and neck with OLED Deck at best. Mainly in lighter games
I’m selling my OG deck for this, but wouldn’t if I already had the OLED
@@Mmmmmk247 makes total sense in your case.
I need that new armoury crate software now. Steam has completely disappeared from mine
Mine disappeared then reappear after bios update it's on and off sometimes everything works properly other times gotta restart it constantly until it works properly.
I hate when he pulls it out by the thumb sticks, not the first time I’ve seen him do it.
I've been waiting for this one...
Got to hold the ally and legion for the first time at Best Buy and I gotta say the ally felt real nice. The legion was a real clunker and I couldn’t help but press all eleven buttons it had on the right grip. The ally was light and reminded me more of a switch which I prefer
I’ve got a legion go and definitely wish I waited for the ally x and ergonomics definitely plays a part for me
Legion go is more of a table/desk device imo.
Did the same thing this year.
80 watt is a game changer for these x86 handhelds. Glad Asus is designing and pushing the market forward to the boutique companies can use their tech lol.
Always crack up when you list settings:
Running at 1080p! fsr set to absolute dog shit mode and yeah wow getting 80 fps!
As some others mentioned....the SD Card is the biggest issue as that being next to the heating vent was the problem that made the Rog ALLY the wrong choice almost every time.
1. Ally/X and other generic PC handhelds only surpass the Steam Deck/OLED's performance at 15W and above
2. For example: whatever takes the OLED 6W to play, would take the Ally/X like 10W to handle at same settings (Varies between games tho)
3. With an 80Wh battery, it's neck and neck. Divide 80 by 10 (AllyX) and 50 by 6 (OLED). OLED still has slightly more battery. But this varies between games
4. I think in lighter titles, Ally X might surpass OLED's overall playtime solely on that 80Wh
5. Back to "1.", if my math is correct, that should be reversed. The Deck has to pull more watts to achieve same performance as Ally/X past that 15W mark. With an 80Wh battery vs OLED's 50Wh, the Ally X might actually be better overall with performance AND playtime
This will be the first time anyone has actually brought something to the table over the Steam Deck/OLED
Of course, this applies mainly with demanding games such as AAAs, which are about 0.01% of the entire PC library
Depending on wattage consumption, Ally X might even surpass OLED playtime in lighter titles solely off the 80Wh battery. Its subpar power efficiency wouldn't be a concern
Of course, this is comparing the devices using the same exact in game settings. You'll likely get much less playtime at 1080p120 on an 80Wh compared to 800p90 on a 50Wh with Deck's power efficiency in the average game
Controls, ergonomics, OS, price, display, convenience, and power efficiency are the main deciding factors between OLED Deck and Ally X now, which obviously Steam Deck/OLED is miles superior in still
It's no longer a 1-sided massacre with the Steam Deck/OLED anymore, we're getting technical now. 80Wh battery alone can make a give a bad handheld a huge advantage over competition. Could you imagine the Steam Deck OLED with an 80Wh? That'd completely level the entire handheld market equivalent to that of the Tsar bomb lol

Interested to see how much additional performance more + faster ram buys. That and eGPU support will be my deciding factor on a potential upgrade.
Just get a Mini PC. A $700 mini PC will destroy the Ally X
@@cqllel5186and its upgradable but you lose the console hand held like experience which is what we are paying more for.
If i buy this , i would probably lock everything at 60 and use 60hz maybe even turn down the rez to 900p even. To extend the battery life even further. Ofcourse good video very informative
Just note that VRR only works when 120hz refresh is enabled on the display.
120htz at 720. Vrr will not kick in if you're not running the screen at 120
with 120hz you can lock to 60fps and you'll still get good battery life. At 12w TDP you should get over 4 hours
Will wait for the benchmarks comparing it with the OG Ally.
You don't need to wait the chip is the same performance will be almost the same with maybe slightly better performance due to the ram upgrade, games will be more stable and it has double the battery life and it has a SSD ungrade
It’s the same thing lol
@@beau-urnsexcept it's really not. Didn't realize double battery life, 8 more gigs of ram, extra usb-c port, bigger SSD, better ergonomics was the same
Nice device but I love my Steam Deck, Ill wait for the second version of that
Yea they can keep it honestly. It’s always on sale here in Canada for 699 and they can’t get rid of them. This new one is on pre order at best buy right now for $1099 plus 13% tax…..hell no
I think the "screen vent" is also for the much fast ram, which now sits between soc and screen.
Pretty exciting.
every video of yours is a must-watch for me!
They extended your warranty until the end of the year. Send it in and they will repair it under the new RMA system.
@@firstclaims30Yeah because we know how amazing their warranty service is. 😂
Should i buy it over anyother handhelds?
yes, but them all
I'd wait for the Zotac Zone or MSI Claw 8 AI +.
I have the og ally. Best windows handheld imo. Rest of them are just ehh. But, I would suggest you to get steam deck if your a newbie.
No ASUS is not to be trusted. Get a Legion Go imo. I had both but love the Go more
Legion Go still got bigger screen and better resolution. For me it's the best device to play with. And I say this as someone who onws Ally as well
Fyi Legion Go you can buy their extended warranty, and they also offer ADP (accidental drop protection) for a reasonable price unlike the competition...
Legion go? Ah that one with terrible ergonomics, heavy and noisy. Nah even og ally was superior to it, Ally X should be much better.

Nobody talks about this, the performance of the steamdeck is horrendous
I really love the original Rog. My wife got me the best model on sale for $400. This is nice but for the price I'm going to wait. I just expected more upgrades than just ram and a battery.
I dont feel like its a mid gen refresh. Its more of a full release with the original being a beta sold to consumers.
Whatever works in your dream world.... If you believe it then it's true.... and thats all that matters. 🌝
@@VeegovonDOOM wow a beta bot!!!
Same! The Ally X felt more like they had to get a new product out ASAP to fix the OG. I don't think it's even been a year since the OG came out, and there's alrdy a new one
The OG is a horribly designed handheld that literally damages itself. Ally X seems more like a quick fix/replacement than a 'mid gen refresh'
Ummm.... did anyone else catch that? This dudes got balls, love it.
Finally putting decent sized, capacity battery in these handheld devices.
That Handheld is the best 😍😄😍
Im most likely going to get this! But would love to see a video from you where you pair this with an eGPU. I also hope that with more handhelds like this coming out that we get more manufacturers make more eGPU variations even with NVIDIA graphics
I was torn between waiting for this, or get a Legion GO. I think the RMA/Customer support is what is keeping me away. So far, I've been enjoying my Legion GO but hope Asus gets it together!
I’m looking forward to the Rog Ally X. Thanks for the video
Rog ally X-2 with a OLED panel would be insane 😤🔥🔥🔥
Sticking with my Steam Deck. I love it. I'll be waiting for Steam Deck 2 before getting another handheld PC, or any PC for that matter. The Steam Deck has taken all of my PC gaming time.
I think that 720p/900p medium/high will be sweet spot for this, depends on game.
How did you get clearance to talk about performance when other reviewers couldn't?
That performance increase is better than I thought.
Nice incremental changes. Original Ally Z1E was for sure a beta.
My favorite change is the removal of the Xge pci port and replaced with the TB4 port.
A prototype
My original Steam Deck just had its USB port broken, and I can't get anyone to try replacing it, so I was thinking about getting one of these. I like the idea of playing Starfield on the go, which my steam deck doesn't handle very well.
If you get your steam deck replaced you could try GeForce Now on the deck, not sure if starfield is on there but I play almost all my games at a stable 60fps with everything on high
@@darnelf.5039starfield is in Geforce now too. I play it once in a while.

$800 usd & no OLED was a mistake
Definitely a smart move to ignore all of the ROG Ally discounts until later version was released.

OLED wouldn't work with VRR. Would prefer to keep VRR over an OLED panel. So hopefully they DON'T change to OLED on the Ally 2.
Why didn't they put Oled in it? It'd justify the pricing plus even more battery life and other Oled features
They didn't want to lose the market advantage of being the only VRR capable handheld at the moment. And to be fair VRR is kinda a big thing to have. A slightly bigger screen would have been nice though to kill those massive bezels
Likely would have been too expensive for them with all the changes they made. Plus they want VRR and there aren't any OLED screens of that size that can do VRR

Honestly I would like to have the Rog Ally X, but since I have the OG rog, I can wait for this to go on sale. I heard that this supports a full size nvme too so this will definitely help with storage size if the sd card reader problem still exists.

I don't have it, but I really LOVE Lenovo Legion Go too!!! 😊❤
The Legion Go is nice, but how can you say it’s not new? There’s a literal 80WHr battery on the Ally X!
If you dont have the original Ally, then it might be better to wait for this.
Or, just wait and see if ASUS keeps their word that they improved their warranty and RMA policies after all the controversy😂😂😂
Can The APU even utilize that RAM in any meaningful way?

Can I suddenly play something at 1440p instead of 1080p or more FPS or anything?
Like if its just for OS and Bloatware, its pretty useless. This is a Handheld Console first, PC with Tasks second
The Legion Go is awful. I didn't like it & sold it.
Hopefully they fixed a lot of stuff. I sold my z1 extreme because neither the thumb sticks or triggers would calibrate, making it essentially useless for shooters and any rpg with a parry system.
It would be nice to have a test between Rog X and the Steam deck oled (performance vs battery). Still the constant windows updates. Sleep button behaviour?
Nice stuff!!!
I'm surprised they left the SD card slot there. They should have moved it to the bottom of the device.
