There’s and episode of the Pokémon Black and White anime where Ash goes to get a gym badge from the flying gym. To his shock, he finds a line of people waiting to battle Skyla. With each person, she examines their Pokémon and decides in her head if she would win or lose. Then, she either awards a badge or denies one completely based on her mental image of the battle. Ash thinks this is terrible and demands a real battle. Luke’s run was blessed because he found the true spirit of Pokémon.

Thank you so much Jan for making this! I'm also a Chinese living abroad and really share the same feeling of what Luke said after the run. We are extremely privileged to have the means and support to live abroad and experience what most of the Chinese speaking community cannot access. Through the love of a game Luke connected people across language barriers and made us all in one as nuzlockers. This is so POWERFUL in today's world especially where geopolitical conflict is on the rise, where someone above tries to divide us through fear and hatred based on nationality and ethnicity. The moment people posting Azumarill in chats across platforms shows how POWERFUL we are when we CONNECT with each other. We didn't let prejudice divide us in that moment like they want us to.

18:51 this right here is why I could never even consider doing a hardcore nuzlocke. For me, the pokemon I'm journeying with are what matter, and grinding run after run just turns them into tools to be optimized. Its even more so for me because I'm a writer. I like to come up with stories and characters to go with my playthroughs, and you just can't do that when every single one of them is expendable.
I respect the intelligence, determination, and skill that goes into these things, and I like hearing the stories from afar. I could just never do it myself.

The fact that Nintendo views rom hacks as a form of piracy really shows that they don’t understand what Pokémon is at its core. They throw out half-baked games for maximum profit nowadays. There’s a reason you rarely see people playing through sword/shield again whereas challenge runs of gens 1-6 are thriving. It’s very heartening that people from so many different places have connected with each other over a Pokémon game that is now almost 20 years old, but is still alive thanks to rom hacks and a dedicated fanbase.

Really resonate with the idea of not forgetting the fact that the challenge is above all supposed to be fun. I get that as difficulty climbs, which many enjoy, we look to seek the most efficient/mathematically sound way to beat said odds, which if both are exacerbated to a high enough degree makes it more a math gacha than a game. I'm nowhere near that competitive but glad to see those that are don't lose sight of why they enjoy the games in the first place.

He literally just turned his own time fulfillment hobby into a 9-5 job 5/6 days a week with limited breaks and poor pay. I respect that he did manage to get his life back but goddamn man. I spent 10,000 hours on Hunt Showdown during the pandemic, and now I can’t even imagine installing it again

This may not be the same game, but this video has given me a different insight to the Black ops zombies runs for Easter eggs because I'll reset 100 times before I get the right rng to lose everything 5 minutes in to my own mistakes. I think this happens to us because when we play the whole game, it refreshes the parts that are very tedious. Getting the perfect run seems to also bring too much pressure as where in an imperfect run u can always blame it on another factor while, in that perfect environment the only thing you can blame is yourself on every mistake, which is very draining to the mental. Long ass comment to say thank you for the insight into my problem I'm having and good video!

The idea of not only planning your course of action but also planning the trainer battles is insane to me. The fact he knew the exact conditions he needs after gyarados just breaks my whole understanding of strategy games

5:51 I've been recently attempting Sacred Gold in a semi Nuzlocke format. _One Encounter per route, but I get to choose and no death upon faint. Level Caps ect still apply. I dub it Euro Extream after MGS series._ *I've never related more to this moment!*

I know that "Spreadsheet" issue, I like taking deep dives into (certain) games and pre-calculate what is best, but also what's the minimum I want to achieve in a video. But the issue comes in once you have an actual run, let's say it's a 8.5/10, I constantly see how it could have been a 9/10, or 9.5/10, or even 10/10, just by 1 luck moment being different - which then completely ignores everything that had to go right to get the 8.5/10, as it just happened it feels like it can just happen again on the next run. But the most ironic part is that most other comparable videos are maybe a 4/10, or 5/10, meaning the 8.5/10 would be way above them. I don't mean quality wise or regarding entertainment (that's subjective), but just what's objectively possible. But because of that I "lost" over 70 videos where I just stopped the recording and needed to take a break because my mood wasn't there anymore.
