  • It's technically not a remaster but I upscaled a higher-quality source and then color-corrected it. I might fix the frame rate later.
Heres a comparison of the before and after:

What's interesting is that this footage is not from the session where they recorded the Instrumental track. That was on a different day in a different studio (Gold Star does not have Wood Paneling behind the mixing board), and the Beach Boys were not present then. Brian was wearing a Red shirt on that day and ended up shirtless as we've seen in the pictures. Chuck Britz the Engineer was also not present the day they made the track, but he's here in the footage. There's only one thing to deduce: this footage is from a lost vocal session for the song. Brian's probably mixing a master, and everyone's listening to the final product.

So there's a mystery I've been trying to solve with this whole Fire event, I've been thinking about making a video essay regarding it... Most sources say this was ONE session ( importance will come later ). Most sources also say that this session took place at Gold Star Studios. However, by comparing pictures of Gold Star's control booth to the one shown in the footage, we can determine that it indeed was not Gold Star, but in fact United Western Recorders ( Now Eastwest Studios). So you may be thinking, " Well then the mystery is solved right? It wasn't at Gold Star, it was at Western. " Well no, because although the FOOTAGE is at Western, there are still other pictures of Brian in the fire helmet in Gold Star's control booth ( he's usually completely shirtless in the Gold Star photos ). So now, the obvious is that there was more than one session, but as I said, most sources state there was only ONE session. So... what happened? I really don't know, I have a few hypotheses. Maybe, there was in fact, more than one session, however, the fact that only one fire session appears on the smile sessions box set sorta debunks that, OR any other fire session could be a lost tape who knows! Perhaps, Brian just wanted to don the fire helmet for fun, it also made an appearance in the Good Vibrations promo film soooo..... anyone else got any ideas?

There were in fact two sessions. One at Gold Star where the basic track was recorded in late November and one a few days later at Western where the band recorded vocal overdubs. The tape for this session is missing however and hasn’t surfaced so the reason why there’s only one Fire session take on the boxset is because that’s all that remains. I think because of this it has sort of become accepted that there only was one session when in reality there was another one. Interesting how we have footage from it but no audio.

Wow, this is the most I’ve seen the facial similarities between Carl and Dennis, which is to say there’s close to no similarity at all. At first glance I thought Carl was Dennis but it quickly dawned on me it was Carl. Also interesting to see Mike having fun with the weird music that didn’t stick to the formula.

I’ve sort of come around on Mike love as a villain. I can see why he would resist it as it was radically different, was less centered on the group, and not something they’d take to the stage. He also thought it would alienate their fanbase. I’ve heard an interview with him where he talks positively of it later, but of course, the fact that it wasn’t completed is a travesty. Several factors weighed in with Brian’s mental health being the main factor.

@@ragingbull888 My thinking on all this is--he's still there participating. Like a wife who refuses to divorce her husband, Mike Love could have left at any time, and most people would have. He was the jilted partner when Brian took up with Tony Asher and Van Dyke Parks---but he stayed when most people would have left. And he also participated on those songs! So for that, I give him credit

@@fruitjuice768 The fire helmets were bought for the Good Vibrations clip, more than 1 month before the 11/26/66 Fire Session recorded by Larry Levine. This session shows Chuck Britz, and nobody knows what they are hearing. I don't think it's Good Vibrations also, cause the single was already released when they filmed the promo. Probably it's Brian mixing down some track for them to put on vocals arterwards.
