Most towns that get them get them at the same time every year if you get them at your city it is usually the same fair that hits that same time of year every year. Like here locally I live on the Mississippi River with Illinois on one side and Iowa on the other so Rock Island County Fair comes in the summer and the Mississippi Valley Fair (which attracts some big name concerts for a fair) is usually right before school starts.

Traditionally there's a difference between fairs and carnivals, but now days people tend to use the terms interchangeably. The difference is what they're focused on; what they're about. For example renaissance fairs are put on by private groups of people and are cultural in nature. County fairs usually have carnival rides, games, and "grab joints" (food concessions) put on by a local government (usually), focused on farming and agriculture, but with a strong entertainment/fun component. And then there are carnivals, like Mardi Gras, that are nothing but excess, entertainment, and fun.
Carnival companies are businesses that travel the country and often return to the same venue at the same time each year. They provide rides, games, entertainments, and food. Some are more elaborate than others. The summer after I graduated from high school I worked for a carnival company. It was...an experience. And while there were several family groups, I wouldn't say there were an inordinate number of "runaways and wanted" in the company. A lot of misfits, and kids like me, who were just taking a summer off after graduation, and having some fun while making some money before starting college in the fall.

There are "local" fairs (county fairs with rides, food, show animals that kids raise, crafts etc.) There are also "state fairs" which is a bigger version of the county fair. Many of the animals, crafts etc. are judged at the local level then winners get to show and be judged at the state level.

Most states have their own state fairs. They will be yearly events normally in the fall. They are huge with rides, farming cometitions, car shows, cooking and crafting competitions, and art shows. School kids compete in many of the art and agricultural shows.
When I was in high school in the early 80s, I enteredthe art show at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. I won an award and certificate for ceramics.
My father was a printing pressman in Houston, and a western artist hired the print shop he worked at to make thousands of prints of his paintings to sell at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. My father was the only pressman they had to make all those prints!!! Those prints he printed were also sold in art stores all over Texas.
I've also been to the Texas State Fair in Dallas. It's about to get started on September 27-October 20. During that time is also the "Red River Shootout". That's the college rivalry game between University of Texas (Longhorns) and University of Oklahoma (Sooners)!!! It is a HUGE football game.

Carnivals are usually traveling shows that focus on entertainment and fun. They can include rides, games, food stalls, performances, and virtual reality experiences. Carnivals are often held with a fair or festival.
Fairs are often state-sponsored events that are more educational or cultural in nature. They can include food stalls, carnival rides, games, music performances, and competitions like livestock judging and cooking contests. Fairs are often community-sponsored and larger than carnivals.
Carnivals have similar roots to the 19th century circus, which were also set up in open fields and moved to new locations after a period of time.

Also, carnivals tend to set up in the city as opposed to the fairs that are outside of the cities, at designated fairgrounds and have so much more to offer besides rides, games and food. They do have lots of those things too, but the fairs are definitely much better, IMO. Like the other comments, I would definitely choose a state or county fair. A funnel cake starts as a fairly fluid batter. The name comes from how they use a funnel to pour the batter _straight into the deep fryer,_ using a random motion to create a typically large, more-or-less round shape.
In the fryer, the batter turns crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside, and it puffs up a bit and kind of sticks to itself a bit, which makes it easier to retrieve. These days you can get all kinds of toppings, but the most traditional is just a heavy dusting of powdered sugar.

Not at all. Carnivals are events like Mardi Gras or Carnival in Rio. Fairs can be small or large. They can be sponsored by local governments or by private groups, organizations or societies. The main difference is their focus on a theme (i.e. renaissance fairs) or are educational in nature (science fairs) County and state fairs focus on agriculture and arts/crafts, and offer entertainments and competitions like livestock shows.

Carnivals are usually just accumulations of rides, food, and games and are often put on by private groups as fund-raisers or celebrations. There won't be animal displays or cake-baking contests at a carnival.

The Minnesota State Fair is the state fair of the U.S. state of Minnesota. Also known by its slogan, "The Great Minnesota Get-Together", it is the largest state fair in the United States by average daily attendance and the second-largest state fair in the United States by total attendance, trailing only the State Fair of Texas, which generally runs twice as long as the Minnesota State Fair. The Minnesota state fair is 1.303 square kilometers. Many foods at the fair are deep-fried or come on a stick, from the classic corn dog to alligator-on-a-stick, lobster-on-a-stick, and deep-fried candy bar on a stick. New to the fair in 2006 was hotdish on a stick, a variant of a classic staple of Minnesotan cuisine. In 2007, one new food was spaghetti on a stick. 2008's new foods included two types of bacon, one called "Pig Lickers", which is chocolate covered, and the other, called the "Big Fat Bacon", which is 0.25 pounds (0.1 kg) of maple-glazed bacon. Another staple of the state fair is “Sweet Martha’s Cookies,” a stand that serves fresh and warm chocolate chip cookies in buckets. And Foods served at the annual Minnesota State Fair have traditionally included watermelon pickles, baked beans, buffalo burgers, deep-fried cheese curds, cotton candy, glazed ham, Australian battered potatoes, chimichangas and homemade apple pie. Some foods reflect Minnesota's agriculture, including cheese curds, milk shakes, and corn dogs. In 2018, 27 new foods were introduced to the Minnesota State Fair including Firecracker Shrimp Stuffed Avocado, Honey Cream Soda Float, Mangonada Shaved Ice, Messy Giuseppe, Nordic Waffles, Smoked Soft Serve Ice Cream, and the UpNorth Puff Pastry. New foods for 2019 included fried tacos on a stick, stuffed cabbage rolls, feta bites, shrimp and grits fritters, blueberry key lime pie, Buffalo chicken chimichanga and assorted other dessert selections. And every year there’s more new food to try. If you like food videos Mike Chen UA-cam channel has the Minnesota State Fair food videos and Sonny from the UA-cam channel best ever food review too.

A fair is generally a yearly event held in a predetermined location, with Animal shows, competitions and so on. A Carnival is a travelling show with rides, food and entertainment that has a traveling itinerary for a good portion of the year. They do not have animal shows/competitions, or other competitive events. They are only for a few days entertainment and they are off to their next scheduled stop. As for the food; i've tried nearly everything there. As for the last time i went to one, was August of this year as a county fair. It covers a 25 acre area with many events ranging from kids events to adults.
And for clarification; a funnel cake is pancake batter deep fried on lard or oil, then generously topped with powdered sugar, and fruit on request. An Elephant ear is essentially flattened fried dough with a mixture of cinnamon n sugar coated on top. There is a multitude of options from the garbage or junk food they're showing, to authentic BBQ, Asian food, Street Mexican, U.S. staples like Cheese burgers, Tenderloin sandwiches, french fries coated in cheese sauce bacon and ranch dressing, and more niche things you wouldn't normally find in town. Candied pecan nuts, shaved ice, ice cream, home made pies cookies n the like, wood-fired pizza, and a ton more.
And a twinkie is sponge cake filled with a sweet creme filling. They are rumored to have a half-life of a bajillion years, and will be the only things left on earth after a nuclear apocalypse aside from cockroaches and Cher.
    Hope this helps.

I haven't been to a fair in a long ti.e.. but small town fairs are the best.. they were smart going early in day with baby.. not too busy. But I bet that place will be super crowded in late afternoon and evdning.. that's when the fun begins.. esp with teens and young adults. My favorite food is sweet corn.. (not just your regular corn) and funnel cake with powdered sugar.

Pennsylvania has the longest one day street fair in June every year. It's called Jubilee Day in a smallish suburb outside of the state Capitol Harrisburg. There's music, food vendors, and local vendors for art, furniture, jewelry, glass, and all things creative! Food vendors have Amish foods, cheesesteaks, sausages, all the staple fried foods and more! Weigh your itinerary carefully my friend! This country is HUGE and every state has something wonderful to offer!

a carnival & a fair are completely different things....carnivals are small & just have commercial games & rides & food....fairs are alot bigger than carnivals & locally run in counties & states usually at fairgrounds & stadiums & have local art & crafts & 4-H which is school kids learning how to raise & take care of farm animals to earn money for college & musical performances & different entertainment acts plus food & games & rides....deep fried food is one of the best things about carnivals & fairs....yes deep fried oreos are a staple of carnivals & fairs....twinkies are not as good as they used to be once a Canadian company bought out Hostess unfortunately....no there's never enough cheese & Wisconsin is proof of that....deep fried cheesecake is delicious....you never go to a carnival or fair when you're not hungry cus the food is always the real reason any of us go lol....I go to the Yuma County Fair every April here in Arizona....the Arizona State Fair (4th biggest in the states) is going on right now in Phoenix from September to the end of October....roasted sweet corn is one of my favorite things....Texas & Minnesota have the biggest state fairs

The only thing I must buy at fairs are funnel cakes. They pour the batter into a vat of oil almost like a string/knot or pretzel shape, but they're dusted with sugar. So basically fried dough with sugar on top, which I will stand by my statement that it's one of the best human inventions (see also donuts, churros, beignets).

Sweet corn is the best the in the USA. Corn period, the best of the best. It’s the most beautiful thing to eat for me in late summer/early fall in Michigan and it’s divine! I have a Farmers Market I go to almost every weekend to do my grocery shopping. Yes, full grocery shopping except my caffeine of choice, Diet Coke, but the line for sweet corn is long and worth the wait! The BEST!!

Hey Andre, everyone has cholesterol, our bodies make it as a bandaid for damage from inflammation. Control the inflammation and it won't matter. As you get older that inflammation makes you hurt so avoid foods that cause inflammation not cholesterol since food doesn't cause it our bodies make it. But food does cause inflammation.

As others may have said, a fair and a carnival are not the same. We have a county fair in our community once a year which runs for about 10 days. It includes 4-H animals, crafts and other projects young people have done and are judged on. There are also rides, different foods, things like tractor pulls and other entertainment shows. There is a state fair that is also once a year, which is also similar but on a bigger scale and the best of the counties are judged. I think a carnival is more like just rides and foods.
I've never had deep fried Oreos or twinkies. None of them sound good to me.

A snow cone is very fine crushed ice in a paper cone. It's packed rather densely into the paper cone & has a round top that extends above the paper cone. Then the ice gets saturated with flavored juice. My favorite was always grape!

Andre, I know you love Texas but Minnesota actually has the largest state fair in the country. Also known as the Great Minnesota Get Together, the Minnesota State Fair has more than 300 concession stands, offers more than 1600 food options, and covers 322 acres. While the Texas State Fair offers 176 food vendors and covers 277 acres. The Texas State Fair does beat out Minnesota, however, in yearly attendance with approximately 2.3 million visitors during the 24 day event. Minnesota's fair is only 12 days but attendance still averages 2 million annual visitors. There are several UA-camrs who have posted videos of their visit to the Minnesota State Fair. You may want to check them out . . . or better yet, come visit us in person next August!

Funnel cakes, elephant ears, kettle corn, fresh lemonade, Indian Tacos. More regional stuff.

Once in a chat room that was located in the UK, I was talking about eating an elephant ear at the fair. People were shocked! They asked if we kill the elephants just to eat their ears. LOL I told them it's a pastry, like a fried pancake with sugar and cinnamon. It's shaped like an elephant's ear after it's rolled out. In Canada they call it a beaver tail.

Is sweet corn popular? Do bears shit in the woods? Andre, there may be a bit of confusion with this one. Sweet corn is the name we give to the corn that we normally eat as is, as opposed to field corn which is used mainly for livestock feed and in making other corn food stuffs. Sweetcorn is the bright yellow corn that one always gets. Field Corn is slightly less yellow and is generally a tougher kernel. Cows eat it and it's ground up to make other corn-based food. It's also used to make auto fuel. E-85 gasoline (85% corn ethanol). But in order to use it, you have to have a Flex Fuel-capable engine. It burns a bit hotter than regular gasoline and provides a bit more horsepower, but you burn thru it a bit faster. It's also slightly cheaper than regular 87 Octane.
The best way to have corn on the cob is to grill it. Grilling corn kinda scorches it a bit, but it really brings out the natural sweetness.
Corn is America's #1 cash crop. Soy beans and Wheat are #2 and #3.

Here in New Jersey you can find deep fry foods and oily pizza, very oily pizza on the Boardwalk, then you have a lot of pizza places don't make the dough/crust, they ordered premade dough all you have to do is add the topping and because it is frozen it also taste like cardboard.

This was a carnival not a fair. I think San Antonio. Name on Police Car.
A carnival is the rides and food court. A fair is usually agri based. Rodeos, 4-H (kid farmers) cattle, sheep, pig, chicken judging. Tractor pulls. Best pie contest, quilt making, biggest pumpkin, horse gymkhana games, etc.
Fairs are all over the US. County, State, local, just like rodeos... everywhere. There are a dozen within a couple hours of my home.
The food is delicious. Bring antacid.
Everyone has cholesterol. It's life. Remember cows eat grass so eating cows must be vegan. LOL.
New diet "rules" have found eggs and butter are healthy. If you want to eat veg and twigs go ahead. I prefer some lean meat.
