- Today we’re back with Episode 3 of our Bass Tales series featuring David Ellefson, legendary co-founder and bassist of iconic 'Big 4' thrash metal titans Megadeth.
In this week's video David invited us to his home in Arizona for a guided tour of his personal bass collection, including what we believe to be one of the first 5-string basses to ever be used in a metal band (and on a groundbreaking metal album). This bass couldn’t be more heavy metal if it tried.

Although it can only barely be heard on the album, Jason Newsted used a 5-string on ...And Justice for All. Still, all respect to both him and Ellefson, I love the bass playing of both

First Metal album recorded with 5-String bass is Back for the Attack Dokken. When I bought the album, I knew something was different. This would be Nov 87. 🤟🏻

This is why I like multiscale basses. A 37" scale allows you to thin up your B string gauge and then it doesn't sound as "farty"

@MomoTheBellyDancer I think wooten has some damn funky lines like "U can't hold no groove". I would argue that he isn't musically boring, since "music" isn't about just the melody aspect either.

David Ellefson underrated? He's been praised by fans and critics since the 80 's , made the cover of countless music magazines around the world since that time and is still hitting the spotlight like on this video. What must happen for him being not underrated?

@@bassmaster5387 Praised by _fans,_ of Megadeth, is the key thing here. He gets nowhere near the praise from the wider metal community that Burton does, and - very unpopular opinion here - I feel like a good chunk of the praise Burton gets is rooted in his tragic death. If you objectively analyze his technique vs. Ellefson's, Ellefson is the more impressive player hands down. Everybody brings up Anasthesia but even I managed to master that one back when I was a complete green gill of a bassist, it's really not as flashy as everyone seems to think. In the grand majority of Metallica's early albums Burton wasn't really doing too much aside from underlining the guitar riffs as you'd expect. Ellefson, meanwhile, occasionally gets to shine with cool riffs like those found in Fatal Illusion, Hook In Mouth, Five Magics, My Last Words, and many more. Even his regular riffing in Holy Wars outclasses most of Burton's riffs.
In no way am I trying to shit on Burton, he WAS very important in developing Metallica's sound with his knowledge of harmony theory. Just saying that he has a bit of an overhyped legacy that tends to unfairly overshadow awesome bassists like Ellefson and even Newsted.

@@johngilbert1634 Not a jackson until a while after. Jackson made their first 5 string for Ellefson. Before that Jackson didn't make a 5 string.

Just like the Billy Sheehan video, I can't say I'm a fan of Megadeth, or metal, but how can you not like a video with such a nice and entertaining person? And you can tell he's enjoying making the video as well. Good job, thanks to all those involved.

@@fuzzydunlop1988 I’ve always thought the same, but Ellefson can fly with his fingers too. With an interview with Frank Bello he fucking tears it up. He also does bring up good points in that interview on why he uses a pick. I only use fingerstyle, but every now and then ill secretly jam with a pick after all there are no limits in music :)
The first 5 string bass used in Metal was used in 1988 by Running Wild bassist Jens Becker. Guys like Dave Ellifson and Alex Webster made it more common though.

Jeff Walker of Carcass used a five-string Aria Pro II bass on and after their Symphonies Of Sickness album (1989), though. :) Maybe even in 1988 on their debut album.

It would only be the first 5-string 8n metal because Jason Newstead's parts were mixed out of ...And Justice for All.
Yea I wouldn't claim "first" about anything in music. There is always some guy sitting a shack in Siberia or something that already did what you thought had never been done before.
I think what they mean is first 5 string bass made for metal. There were plenty of fives and probably a few metal bassists using them, but they weren’t engineered as metal basses until Jackson cane along with the flipped p and all.

Not really, Yes Jason is seen playing a five string WAL bass in the video for "One" and on the "Justice" tour.
But according to both Jason himself, the recording engineer and the band's crew, he recorded the entire album using a four string Steinberger headless bass.

And if you look up the "And justice for Jason" remastered version of that album, you will hear that there's no low B anywhere on the album.
@@RastaSaiyaman Even still, the One video came out more than a year before the Rust in Peace sessions began. Not that it matters because none of Jason's parts made it to the album.
Jason Newsted has been using ESP Horizon 5 string live in 1987, He used Wal Mk2 5 string on ...And Justice For All album in 1988 that can be seen in video for "One".
I'm pretty confident he used a 5er on Black Album.
@@iamgribs Jason used a multitude of basses to record the black album, but the main bass for the album was a 4 string Spector NS-2

@@Maggai No offense to other musicians of that time and now but Jason has really good clothing style. Down to the earth guy really honest and with huge heart. His bass collection is also very nice and badass. No funny ,stupid shapes or colors.

Jason Newsted used a 5 string Wal on '... and Justice For All' back in 1988 (it's seen in the One video), he also used a 10 string bass during the recording of the black album.
Unfortunately, the bass tracks on AJFA were eighty sixed.
@Inabón Díaz If you would pay f***ing attention, people are trying to a 5 string bass was used on the recording of AJFA which was released before Rust In Peace. I brought up that AJFA does not count since the bass tracks were omitted from the recording. So, before you call someone out for being "stupid," you need to have your crap together.
He said Jackson first ever 5 string bass. The title may be wrong but Dave didn't say the first 5 string bass ever.

Cool interview ! Dave Ellefson is a great player and such a nice guy . I mixed sound for Megadeth 86 -87 . At that time everyone in the band was using BC Rich guitars . Then Ellefson and Mustaine started playing Jacksons . A real game changer in terms of look and sound .
To think about it, idk if Ellefson played a BC Rich bass. He's just so symbolic as a Jackson bass player
But that BC Rich guitar tone and sound on Peace Sells is ... magic.

I was thinking exactly the same thing. What makes Ellefson's claim so painfully absurd is that it's so easily disproven by almost anyone: Jason Newstead is seen playing (miming really but still..) a 5 string bass in the video for 'One'. It's a Wal he used to record some of the parts nobody could hear on ...And Justice for All. Despite this, it's still there.... While I doubt either of them were really the first to use a 5 string bass in a metal band, Jason Newstead was definitely playing them before Dave Ellefson.
Dave Ellefson : One the most tight, original, and humble Bassist in Metal History. Strong personality, unique and recognizable sound from the first note. If you have any doubts, check out the isolated bass tracks from the (classic) album "Rust in Peace" on UA-cam ! ("Holy wars", "Five Magics" just to name a few). ROCK ON Dave ! From what I know, the first five string bass played in a metal album was in Port Royal, album from the band Running Wild. But it obviously isn't as big as Megadeth, so the the biggest influence in that matter is surely David Ellefson! Cheers from Brazil!

I was in an almost successful metal band (opened for Metallica, Megadeth, Spinal Tap...) in the SF Bay Area in '84. Our bass player played a 5 string. He was monsterous. Used an SVT for a preamp, had a tone like the klaxon at the swimming pool. He would break a string on his bass every night.
GEEZER! GEEZER! GEEZER! ... It'd be great to hear from Geezer Butler. or Dusty Hill maybe Ian Hill. I'd like to make a suggestion as humbly as I can. Could a new Title logo be made for this series of video's loved all 4 so far but I almost went right by this one because I didn't actually get what it was right off. a nice easy to get it logo for the series would be a wonderful add. thank you for your time be safe be happy and please. David Ellefson is one of the reasons I started playing bass back in the day. Him and Cliff Burton were my heroes. My favorite bass I own is a Spector Euro 5 string with his signature EMG pickups in it.

Love the Countdown To Extinction frame record on the wall, such a classic album cover, the one that got me into Megadeth actually. I miss the days of bands having such iconic artwork, I remember I used to watch that CTE picture in my room so much while listening to the record that I felt like I was transported inside the image or something like that, it was a weird but awesome feeling. It's been long since I saw a record with an album cover that struck me hard, if my memory serves me well, I think that last "straight to the hall of fame of album covers" was Mastodon's Leviathan. Love Dave, he definitely has done quite a lot for bass players in metal.
James May really know how to play the BASS
Jason Newstead toured on the "Damaged Justice" tour in 1988 with a Wal 5-String. He recorded the album however with a Steinberger 4-String according to an old tab book I have (printed in 1989), though a sound engineer claimed he used the Wal 5.
he also had an alembic 5 string. You can see it on the seattle 89 concert

Jens Becker from Running Wild used a 5 strings on Death Or Glory album (1989) a lot and on Blazon Stone also (1991) also featuring the music video of Conquistadores with a 5 strings bass , probably the first 5 bass on a metal video ever.
This is one of the guys, I would say top 2 or 3 that the number one spot bounces back and forth between that inspired me to play bass. Very grateful for this I got 2 more payments on my Fender Vintage 1970 Jazz Bass to make , then I am signing up. What a great way to start my Saturday off with this video.

Wrathchild America's Climbin' the Walls precedes Rust in Peace by a year, 1989. Brad Divens was using 5 string basses for Metal back then.

Junior is one metal bass legend who doesn't need lots of distortion in his tone to sound heavy.
Junior is one of my inspirations to play bass my tone sucks because of my cheap amp I wish I had a Hartke but GC doesn't carry Hartke so I'm going on eBay or Sweetwater to get an Hartke amp to get my 1986 Ibanez roadstar ii bass up to its true potential as a good japanese copy of a fender pj bass

No offence to Ellefson or any other pick guys, but don't start with a pick. Its not a big guitar and shouldn't be played like one. Your fingers will hurt btw, you have many blisters ahead of you.
