- This method can be used for both achieving "The Reaper Becomes the Reaped" achievement, and grinding for ultimate gear for party members
1. Climb to 5F in Yukiko's Castle
2. Use a Godo-M to exit the dungeon and save your game
3. Enter Yukiko's Castle 1F and open all treasure chests
4. Leave and re-enter 1F opening all treasure chests on the floor
5. Repeat for a total of 5 trips (20 chests should be opened in total, if not, enter a few more times to make the difference)
6. Leave the dungeon and save your game
7. Enter Yukiko's Castle 5F and open both chests
8. If you start hearing rattling chains after opening the first chest, he MAY appear after opening the second
8. If The Reaper doesn't appear, reload your save and try again
To answer the common question of the chains being heard before 20 chests, do remember that your first time doing this will include previous chests that you've opened in the other dungeons you have visited. The 20 chests count starts after a previous trigger of the chains (whether in Yukiko's Castle or another dungeon). So to make things simple, open chests until you hear the chains, leave the dungeon your on, save your game, THEN start doing this method.

@@mgsxmike Fast traveling will randomize the dungeon floor layouts and would probably take you longer to find the chests since each time you enter 1F the layout will be completely different. By manually leaving the dungeon you prevent the floor from changing its layout, making it easier for you to find the chests. Hope this helps!

okay I finally found an answer and it solved my issue completely. Its long so I apologise in advance but there are still people out there confused and this will seriously help;
"Basically, there is info scattered all over the net regarding the Reaper, and none of it really accurately describes how it spawns, what affects it, resets it etc. If there was such a informative post, i would have likely saved hours messing about with the.Reaper spawning mechanics.
Anyway, i will state here a fail proof guide, but first i want to clear up the myths surrounding the Reaper spawn that i have tested myself.
* After opening 21 chests, you will hear chains, the 22nd chest MAY spawn the Reaper.
* The 22nd must be a red chest that has a chance containing a shadow. If you are lucky and the 22nd chest spawns the Reaper then in any other circumstances, that chest would have spawned a shadow!
* Opening a chest at the exact moment you hear the chains rattling DOES NOT guarantee that the Reaper will spawn from that chest (if it does and to the person who this happened, its just coincidence)!
* Gold chests will not spawn the Reaper because they cannot contain a Shadow. However, Gold chests DO NOT reset the meter as almost all players believe. ( I tested this by opening a Gold Chest as my 21st, after I could hear the chains).
* Nothing resets the meter, leaving TV world, using Goho-M etc, NOTHING. In fact, the only thing that resets the meter is opening 21 chests consecutively,
* Exiting the floor by any means while you can hear the chains resets the meter, and opening the 22nd chest resets the meter, NOTHING ELSE!!
* Engaging enemies DOES NOT affect the meter!
* The Reaper can spawn on any difficulty on any playthrough (I just spawned him on Very Easy in NG, and in my 1st dungeon, I defeated him as level 24)!! Because of this and because he takes so long to kill at this level, he may be good for farming lines for HRF, havent tested yet though.
* Doesnt matter if you have Teddy or Rise with you.
* Players are going wrong with viewing guides because the guides always states 1st 'open 20 chests'! Problem is, you dont know how many chests you have opened already so this doesnt really help other than tell what chest count is needed!
Here is my failproof Guide (it is failproof because it works no matter your chest count and doesnt assume that your count is at 0);
(Make sure you have Goho-M)
1. Enter Yukikos Castle.
2. Speedrun to Floor 5. Do not open any chests, and avoid fights if possible.
3. Use Goho-M to leave dungeon.
4. Return to entrance and save.
5. Re-Enter Yukikos Castle 1st floor.
6. IMPORTANT,.open each chest on this floor, but.each time you open a chest, listen for the Chains rattling before you open another. If you opened a chest and now hear a Chain rattling sound, dont open anymore and proceed to STEP 8. If you opened every chest and dont hear the Chains, proceed to STEP 7.
7. Press square, and return to the entrance. Now Save your game, then re-enter 1st floor and repeat STEP 6.
8. Remember how many chests you opened upon THIS visit to the 1st floor until the Chains began rattling! Did they begin rattling after you opened the 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th chest? The chest the Chains began rattling after was your 21st chest!!
9. Re-load your most recent save.
10. Now you know where your chest counter is at, the 21st may be your next chest or the 18th may be your next chest. You need to save the game so that the 21st will be your NEXT chest. This may mean you already have the save you need or you may have to proceed back to 1st floor and open 1 or 2 more to get and then save (Hope thats understandable)!
11. Now with a save where you know the next chest will cause the chains to rattle, proceed to Yukikos Castle and enter at 5th floor (from the menu when you attempt to enter the Castle).
12. They are only 2 red chests on this floor and either can spawn a shadow. Basically open both chests hoping the Reaper spawns. 1st chest here will.cause Chains to rattle, 2nd chest will hopefully spawn the Reaper (which originally would have spawned a Shadow). If not reload your most recent save and repeat STEPS 11/12 until you encounter the Reaper (I believe there is approx a 20% chance of that 22nd chest on that floor spawning the Reaper, so shouldn't take you to many attempts)! "

Hmm, about the random piece of gear, the SMT Wiki says for Persona 4:
"Defeating the Reaper may grant the respective characters their strongest weapons per defeat; however, should all of the in-battle characters have received their strongest weapons, the Reaper instead drops the strongest armor. If all of those have already been received as well, the Reaper drops the Omnipotence Orb, an accessory which voids all attacks excluding Almighty."
So it's not random, except if it's different in Golden

I'm playing P4G for the 1st time and accidentally encountered the Reaper during Kanji's dungeon, but he dropped Godly Robe for me. I didn't get an ultimate weapon. So I feel it's random.
EDIT: I was on my 2nd playthrough and decided to farm Reaper. It dropped all weapons: Yu -> Yosuke -> Yukiko -> Kanji -> Chie -> Teddie -> Naoto. Based on that order, I'm thinking which weapon is dropped depends on which member is in your party at the time and it prioritizes giving the weapons for members that canonically join the team first. Naoto was always in my team but she got her weapon last while Chie didn't get hers until I switch her in the team. But that's just a theory lol
I figured this out by accident. This is a huge pain in the butt when farming physical mirrors to beat Contrarian King early.

During the time I did find him I was way under lvl to challenge him. Now that I’m ready it’s like the game doesn’t want me to find him
fr found him multiple times during my first play through but in my second one got to lvl 93 haven’t spotted him once
I was able to spawn the Reaper before getting to Floor 8 Yukkio's Castle and versusing Empress Shadow Boss. So I only had 3 teammates, and I was only like level 13. So I obviously got slaughtered. But after every New Game+, I felt like the Reaper spawned less frequently. Although I'm not using the load file method.

when i was on yukiko's castle when i was like lvl 5, i accidently caused the chains to appear and i was not only on the 6th floor, i also ran out of goho-ms and thought it was gonna spawn like the normal shadows i think like in persona 5
For you folks using cheat engine start the 5F at 12 chests opened so the west room spawns the reaper. 13 is a bad luck number in japanese culture hence, reaper spawn

Was able to consistently get the chains on PS4 by opening 28 chests from the 1st floor (7 runs). Go back out and save at the hub, then return to the 5th floor, open the 29th chest, which should activate the chains sound effect to start playing. The reaper then has a chance to spawn on the 30th chest. Got him on my 2nd reload attempt. The 22nd chest reaper spawn seems to only work on the PS Vita and Steam versions. So odd that it's different on PS4 but whatever glad I figured it out. Hope this helps someone out in the future.

I'd prefer it be more like P5. I felt the Reaper showed up way too fast in P3 so I would end up facing him when I really didn't want to.

I think it’s cuz in p3 it spawned too fast sometimes but you could easily evade him with the sections of the floors that had steps and big spaces, etc. on them, and p5 they gave you plenty of time to leave unless you wanted to fight it in which case you’d have to wait a long time. In P4, I think if he spawned like he does in the other games, you’d be screwed cuz the dungeons are more narrow and it’d be harder to avoid him earlier in the game?? But I feel they should have done it like in p3 at least so we wouldn’t have to jump through hoops to fight him.

So this is how it's supposed to do. I've seen hundreds of the same video and no one explains better. They just say, go and open 20 and then you hear chains and have the chance. Even seen ppl saying to open all the chests in 5F instead of other floors like you said. It made me think it was necessary to open all the chests in the same floor first.

I'm reloading game for like an eternity now, at least 15x and never once this fk reaper appears. I hear the chains, open box, nothing happens and the sound disappears.

I jus ran into him with zero knowledge of his existence at level 45. So imagine my surprise.
So I fought the reaper on mitsuo kubo's dungeon in new game plus, thinking I can beat the reaper with the satan persona. Words cant describe how heavily I underestimated the reaper.
I was around lv 60 so maybe that is the reason I got whipped bad
Edit: this was in newgame+, so that's why I had satan at lv 60, sorry for not mentioning that

This guide helped me so much. Now I can easily clap Marie and Final Dungeons coming up. Izanagi-no-Okami is a freaking tanky boi because I feel nothing while my teammates are struggling. I just want best weapons and I can call it a day. I want the game to still be challenging a bit.
Dude the thing I do here is reset the reaper timer to 0 and go to 5f to get the two chests, go to 6f/4f and then back to 5f to grab the 2 chests

Accidentally did the first floor like 7 times instead of 5
I unintentionally got Reaper to spawn when I was grinding for specific quest items. I was way under leveled, so I escaped cuz there was no way I'm losing all my progress.
It was my first time seeing Reaper in this game. He never spawned once in my one PS Vita playthrough I did some years back

I’ve redone the floor 5 method and have reset over 25 times. I hear chains every time. Do I need to have something else or is it just bad luck?
It's purely based on luck. I can't say for sure the exact probability, but if I had to guess it's maybe a 20-25% chance? I've had moments as well where I was never getting him for a long while and other times where he'll appear pretty often. Don't lose hope!

do you have to leave and come back another day if you get more than 20 chests or is there a way to reset it's spawn conditions?
To reset the conditions open chests until you hear the chains, then leave the dungeon and save your game. This resets the count back to 0.

What if you hear the reaper chains before 20 chests?
u counted wrong then, also golden chests count as regular ones if you don't hear the chains. If you hear the chains and u open a golden one it resets the count.
What fenchai said is true tho. Golden chest counted just as the same as the normal one but the reaper can never come in golden chest so it'll just reset the counter if you open it when you hear chain sound
Jesus- this guy was annoying to find. I hate rng crap like this. Thankfully Persona 5 does away with the rng crap for bringing the big guy.
Instead, you have to rely on something even worse! YOUR OWN PATIENCE!

Weird,i already try exactly like the video, but nothing happen to me. Already try 4x try, but only normal shadow jump from the 22th chest
Did you leave the dungeon after hearing the chains? If you did, it reset the counter. Always save after opening 20 chests.
Yeah followed this video to a T and didn't hear any chains my guy yet you do don't use mods for an info vid if you're not gonna be serious

edit: I managed to beat him. For some reason he wasn't spawning on 5F so I decided to try another location. I went to heaven 9 and just did the same as 5F and I got him in 2 tries. I am also playing on PC so they may have changed it.
I did this on the Steam version as well. I've had times where he never spawned and other times where he did. I can't say for certain what denotes the rate at which he'll *definitely* spawn. It's just all on luck...Maybe it is based on weather? I've never looked super deep into it other than the order of chests to open, to clearing out the room first before opening the chest, and none of it seems to make the difference...Of course, you don't HAVE to go to 5F, but it's just the easiest and least complicated route to take to ensure you get the chains, and that the only other chest on that floor is the only one he can potentially spawn in.
@@gamingnerd for the reaper to spawn, you have to have rattling chains and open a chest that would normally contain a shadow right? A shadow never appeared in the 5F chest that would trigger the chains. I don't know how the spawning works but my only guess is that maybe I was too over leveled, kind of like how shadows turn small when you get more levels. So a shadow never spawned in the chests. Doesn't matter now anyway. At the end of the day I fought the reaper and won.

I was doing this cause I thought it was a glitch I could exploit, so the chains weren’t part of the ost 😭
Its best if you have that card where you aviod shadows to increase you odds

i'm following a 100% guide and having trouble getting the reaper to spawn, i HAVE to assume that you were using the same guide because i looked up and we were on the exact same date, 1/18. that's the date the guide tells you to fight the reaper, no chance that's a coincidence right??
How many attempts does this usually take? I’ve been reloading but never get the reaper to come out the chest on floor 5 when the chains are rattling.
It can take you 2 tries or it could take you 20, it's very random when he decides he wants to attack you despite hearing the chains every time you do it
by the way, the reaper will show up if the chest you were supposed to open was going to have a shadow fight
So yeah, it's random but that's the reason

Rafi .A It’s an accessory that nulls all damage for the wearer, unless they have Repel/Absorb, which takes priority over the null.

1. Yoshitsune can clap any boss, this includes the reaper.
2. If you want the japanese VO it should be in the settings.

I've heard that for this method to work, you needed to at least have played the game twice (meaning that in the first run he doesn't appears). Indeed, I've heard the chains for many times but never ended up meeting the Reaper. Is this true then?
No you can get the Reaper on your first playthrough. The chains are definite, but the actual Reaper spawn is random. I'm not exactly sure of percentage but I'd say probably a 25% chance he'll spawn.

@@droid4l don't worry bro I got it to work... it just took more than 20... follow the video as usual.. if you don't hear the chains reload and do a few more boxes on the 1st floor and save it then try 5th floor again... it was like 28 boxes for me or something... and I did it as soon as I entered the dungeon. Comment again if ur stuck and ill try help.

its fine, the chain noises is actually a sign that you may encounter the reaper when you open the next box. in my case i've heard that noise after opening 7 boxes at floor 1. i dont get the reaper at the 8th box, so i reload my game and loot the boxes again, stop at the 6th box and save. go to floor 5 and spam that 2 boxes. got it at 2nd reload.
