Oh also of note, this was the episode they were shooting when Bob Odenkirk had his heart attack. Vince, Rhea, Tony, and Patrick were all present too. In the commentary for the episode they point out which shots were prior to the heart attack and which shots were from weeks later, it's crazy how well they matched everything and made the scene appear seamless.

Lalo was such a huge challenge for Gus, and in the end Gus got lucky (and he knows it, and I think Lalo knew it too given his dying smile) but this I think explains his feeling of invincibility in Breaking Bad. Some conceited high school chemistry teacher sure didn't seem like much of a threat.

I’ve always interpreted Gus’s statement of ‘“he talked Lalo out of it” to mean that Gus realized in that moment that Lalo didn’t really care who came to Gus’s house, since this was all a diversion anyway to keep people away from the lab. Gus knew that this was out of character for Lalo.

If hed gone back to his trailer between takes hed be dead. But he sayed on set... Honestly, I know some dislike it but I really do love the way Lalo goes out. Yeah it was predictable but holy fuck. Like anything could have happened. Gus got lucky, was grazed a few times but was okay. Lalo’s last breath is a laugh as he spits out blood, chills. He lost because he got cocky, and Gus lost because of his emotions. They both succumbed to their biggest flaws. And then the burial scene *chef’s kiss*

22:42 - "He talked Lalo out of it?" When I first heard this I thought the same thing as you did... that Gus was "impressed" with Jimmy's ability to talk people into / out of things.
But later on, I figured out that this was the moment when Gus realized Lalo's "real" plan. Lalo had no intention on having someone "kill" Gus. If it was that easy, he would have done it himself. He knew that anyone walking up with a gun would be stopped. Lalo's real intention was to create a distraction / diversion. This way, ALL of the security team would be at his house, and the laundry would be left unguarded.
    Thanks for another great reaction.

I remember when I first saw this episode from start-to-finish, and it definitely felt like the ultimate turning point that truly paved the way for some very important characters not only in the Better Call Saul timeframe, but also Breaking Bad as a whole!
Kim’s guilt and ultimately send off in the following episode (which I believe you saw at this point, right?), Jimmy’s final nail in the coffin in completing his full transformation into Saul Goodman, Gus’ cementation as the overarching villain in most of the Breaking Bad universe in the overall world before Walt truly makes his way down, etc.
Not gonna lie, when I first saw this episode, when Kim was going to (try to) kill Gus, I instantly had flashbacks of Jesse killing Gale to save Walter playing in my head.
To answer some of your questions, particularly on my opinion on how I felt about Jimmy and Kim’s situation and facing the consequences of what they put Howard through; I honestly have a 50/50 view and feeling process.
While I do well acknowledge that this was definitely coming for Jimmy and Kim, facing the consequences, and their scheme coming back to bite them, I still held onto the attachment to the two characters, not only the characters who genuinely love each other, helped each other through thick and thin, but also the two incredible characters in general, even if at this point, they’d become horrible people.
I definitely knew I’d see consequences, and expected to see them like these, but at the same time…is it sad that I didn’t want to lose them? I don’t even think Howard would’ve wanted them to pay in blood 🩸He even tried to dissuade Lalo from hurting Jimmy and Kim, and he genuinely thought he was gonna hurt them instead of him.
Speaking of which, bye bye Lalo 👋 You had a good run. It’s also a bittersweet fairwell to Tony Dalton and his fantastic performance 😈
Honestly, a lot of people love to talk about Lalo’s role with Nacho and the Salamanca’s, and rivalry with Gustavo Fring, and I don’t blame them.
But honestly? One of the biggest things about Lalo that stands out to me is how he’s the final piece of the puzzle on Jimmy McGill’s road to becoming the Saul Goodman we know in the Breaking Bad universe!
Much of Saul’s livelihood and operations, especially how far down Saul is willing to go is thanks to his meetings and encounters with Lalo. It lead to Saul going from mere scams to genuine cutthroat approaches. Before Lalo, even Jimmy never would’ve stooped as low as murder.
Being Lalo’s lawyer, and occupational hazards that came with it, was the final nail in Jimmy McGill’s coffin to becoming Saul Goodman which would pave his way to representing the great and horribleness of the one and only…Heisenberg.

    • @saulgoneman
      @saulgoneman 9 місяців тому +1

Its true and makes Mike somewhat sympathetic, but also makes him a hypocritical idiot imo. How many "out of the game" people have to die before you maybe realise your whole job is completely and obviously evil and your honour code is a horseshit justification? Mike feels guilty, but never lets that guilt change his path, he just uselessly wallows in it. A lot of people praise the "bad choice road" speech in 5x09 as sage advice, and think of Jimmy as ungrateful for initially rejecting it, but within the context of the story at that time and especially with the added context of season 6, its really a violent criminal fatalistically rationalising his choices. "But eventually you're back on [the bad choice road]" is the same shit Chuck always said to Jimmy, that fundamentally there's no hope of becoming a better person, yet people have wildly different reactions to Mike saying it and Chuck saying it. Jimmy and Mike have the same thematic core, they are both scumbags who resign themselves to being scumbags, and thus become even bigger scumbags.

Howard's death was due to a lot of things : Kim and Jimmy's plan, Kim who didn't say to Jimmy Lalo was alive, Kim was the leader of plan against Howard but Jimmy would have to stop her idea and not be agree with her, and Howard came at Jimmy and Kim's appartment but he was at the wrong time because Lalo came too and that's not directly Jimmy and Kim's fault. But it has clearly consequences of Kim and Jimmy's fate.

let's not forget the main culprit whose stupid actions caused all of this to land on all the others in the first place...Werner Ziegler! (I'm not even joking)
He knew what kind of people he was working with and practically commited 2nd hand suicide because he felt unpatiently homesick and lonely. And then he "talked to somebody about it" despite Mike giving him a last warning earlier to NOT do exactly that!
Everything Jimmy and Kim did that made Howard consequently be at their appartment had nothing to do with the reasons that made Lalo be there aswell...and the latter is clearly what turned this situation into a "cruel fate".

  • @jlerrickson

Mike probably knows enough about Howard to know that he was most likely a good person. He would have seen him during his days as the parking attendant. More than that, though, he knew enough about Kim and Jimmy's scam to know what they were setting up for Howard. That would have taken some extra digging on top of the surveillance, but we know Mike to be tenacious and thorough, even if the issue is peripheral. The distaste for Kim and Jimmy's behavior was real, as was his sadness that yet another good person bit the dust simply by being in the wake of people involved with the cartel. Mike's evolution into the person we know from Breaking Bad is now complete.

To be fair. It seems rather realistic. No way that Lalo with the personality of him we have already seen after being disrespected and attacked in his own house... biding his time in secret and alone to manipulate everyone to get this 1 vs 1 confrontation with the man that killed his "family" would have hurried and run away with that camera to tattle on him to Don Eladio. Lalo is getting ready to shoot Gus in the head here and Gus just outplays him. To be fair. It's a bunch of luck. Gus is lucky Lalo couldn't hit him on the move and that he ACTUALLY did get a vital shot off on Lalo etc. But it's definitely plausible especially psychologically but also physically.

Here’s something else that a few have pointed out: we all know the kind of person Howard was, friendly and was on a first name basis with many people, he was genuine with everyone he met. Mike was the parking lot attendant at the courthouse, so he probably interacted with Howard every day. I could see Howard talking to Mike, asking how his day is going and maybe even having a quick chat about their lives outside of work. Mike was probably the best judge of character in the BrBa/BCS universe, and so he knew that Howard was a genuinely good person. That’s probably a big reason why having to bury him in that manner, next to the sociopathic killer who ended Howard’s life, was absolutely soul crushing for Mike.

He truly understood the weight of the situation & once again, an innocent person is dead as a result of this game they’re all immersed in. And although we never saw them interact, I’m sure Mike saw Howard from time to time when he still worked as the parking attendant at the court house. Ugh! At least they treated his lifeless body with some respect as they dropped him in that hole, under the freaking lab of all places like wow, just wow. But Patrick Fabian, still giving a great performance, even after death to just be lying there like that. Rest easy Howard & I hate but don’t hate to say but rest in peace Lalo as well! I don't see Howard's murder as Jimmy and Kim facing a consequence. They may feel bad or horrible and it certainly has an impact on their lives but what they did to Howard and what they had -up until recently- been involved with were worlds apart. Lalo was the only somewhat possible threat that could have even on the fringes entered their minds and Jimmy had been assured of his death and Kim had been assured that they were being watched and protected from Lalo. I suppose Howard coming to their home is a foreseeable event though it had never happened before. But a violent dead man from another world coming there and coming at the same time? That wouldnt be in the realm of possible outcomes, especially for Jimmy. Frankly anyone including Howard could have been there at that time and the outcome would have been the same. i do hold Kim a bit(more) responsible since she knew Lalo was alive even though she thought she was being watched and protected. i think what they did to Howard was trash though and highlighted really how well Kim had been doing, despite how much her relationship with her mom screwed her up, at least until she hooked her star to Jimmy and that toxicity bubbled up to the surface, not too dissimilar from Jane being clean until she was around Jesse using.

I herd one of the creators (I don't remember who) talking on the commentary of one of this episodes here on youtube, and they said that all the Howard scheme leading to his death was a parallel to Jimmy getting Chuck's insurance cancelled, and that leading ultimately to his death. The point was that Jimmy never learned from his mistakes, cause he was never willing to learn.

    • @preciousodyssey
      @preciousodyssey 9 місяців тому +1

@@gonzalogallego9265 That occured to me but i think Jimmy was a much more direct cause of Chuck's death than Howard's. Everything that happened with Chuck was a foreseeable possibility if Jimmy had actually thought it through instead of being himself and reacting impulsively out of anger. This with Howard and Kim's meticulous charge of the plan; never in a million years would they have been able to see a future where this plan would lead to Howard and Lalo being in the same room. That would have taken a Dr. Strange level of probability sight. And of course Jimmy believed Lalo was dead. In fact, iirc, the beginnings of this Howard plan started the night they learned Lalo was dead or soon would be and that they were safe.

    • @gonzalogallego9265

@@preciousodyssey I get what you're saying. I also think that Jimmy never thought that messing with Chuck's insurance would lead to his suicide. In season 4 episode 1, Jimmy tells Kim that Chuck was playing music in his house and seemed fine. And Howard also thought that Chuck was strong, and he could take it. But I get your point that we can't blame someone for something that's an incredible improbability and they couldn't have predicted. I think the point is that things can get out of control if you start messing with someone, and you never know what could be happening in their lives.

22:41 you misunderstood «He talked Lalo out of it» part also, this was not about Jimmy's ability to "talk his way out of things" that mattered to Gus, it was about Lalo not caring who's going to Gus' house to do "point and shoot" stunt, at that point Gus knew it was a ploy.

I don’t see them as facing the consequences for being part of the cartel as you could say the same about Nacho’s fate for joining the cartel. I think Jimmy and Kim’s journey is summed up by Mike’s speech in Bagman about how bad decision makes you go down an endless bad path and no matter what you do, you will always be forced to make things worse. Nacho, Mike, Walter White all seem to have gone down bad choice road to their end.
"We all make our choices. And those choices, they put us on a road. Sometimes, those choices seem small, but they put you on the road. You think about getting off, but eventually you're back on it. And the road we're on led us out to the desert and everything that happened there and straight back to where we are right now. And nothing, nothing can be done about that."

Nah, Jimmy and Kim needed to face the consequences for their actions but I can't say that they deserve this either. If you've lived through watching somebody you know die suddenly and violently right in front of you, you know that's not the kind of shit you can wish on anybody. I'm thankful for years and years of therapy because ooh baby the way they shot all of these aftermath scenes is extremely triggering. Like, it's weird to say but that's a compliment. I definitely feel for both of them in this situation. Howard didn't deserve to die like that, and they were wrong for what they did to him - but I'd argue they really *didn't* know what they were asking for. Yeah they got in bed with the cartel but this isn't a lifestyle either of them really know well (yet). They couldn't have known it would go down like this.

I like the tension even if i would like to see more about Kim and Saul, and the scene with Kim on the road next to the police is not so important. And Lalo killed every Gus men...But great episode even if i prefer episodes 7 and 9, Lalo vs Cus was great and the tension. Poor Howard to finish like this

Yeah! I love watching these kinds of shows in English since watching them in Spanish doesn't make justice to the actors performance due to the dubbing. And also it makes some scenes very... Unintentionally funny, like, how can he can't understand what a character is saying even tho they're speaking the same language? But yeah, hearing Gus in BB was funny, but hearing Lalo?! Ear candy

I always felt like the character of Lalo was underused during the final season. Tony Dalton was filming Hawkeye and a movie while this show was in production so he is gone for 3 episodes and we don't really see much of Lalo until he dies, probably for scheduling conflicts
His whole arc felt rushed and him being in Germany kinda removes the character from what's going on in the main plot
I do like the speech Gus gives when killing him as we get to see the REAL Gus, not the front he uses in most interactions and why he stays ahead of the game most of the time

Clearly Lalo missed his chance to take his shot. Instead he had to be an ass. He defeats himself here. And poor Howard, the ultimate tragic ending, stuck next to Lalo. I don't think the explosion opened up the floor, so it might not be likely they dug up the floor. Saul and Kim don't know about it and everyone else who does is dead. I don't remember if Mike tells Saul later on or not. I forgot just enough of this show to make it entertaining to watch again.

I'm gonna be honest. Didn't like lalo's death at all. Felt cheap.
First, they had to set it up with Gus hiding the gun. Which basically gave away what was gonna happen.
Now the whole Lalo's plan to lure Gus into the laundromat was good. But then... I'm not gonna lie, felt out of character to make such a mistake of well .. getting too cocky. He should've known better with Gus.
So in the end we got subpar shooting scene in the dark, telegraphed before by Gus hiding the gun.
Some people will say it was great, cause it all was luck and Gus could've died too. For me...Idk, I didn't like it. Like I said it felt cheap. Expected Lalo to go out in a different way.
Now before anyone jumps on me - that's just my personal opinion 🤷‍♂️

Lalo being cocky is the norm for him. Guy shot up and burned down the TravelWire in broad daylight in season 4, rammed a guys car to chase Mike through the middle of the city in the same episode, could have ran from the hitmen that came to his house, but decided to stay and kill them all, casually waltzed up to the Croatian etc. And he didn't view Gus as someone who could fight back when isolated, Gus' threat was his men. Lalo had a gun pointed at Gus, and had already checked him for weapons, his confidence makes sense imo. We know Gus is going to pull some shit because we're watching a TV show, and we know Gus is alive, but from Lalo's POV the only pressure is a time limit. It IS an anti-climactic scene, and I understand why Lalo fans were/are upset, but Lalo was never going to get a flashy and dramatic exit, his role in the story is too limited by Breaking Bad.
