I guessed right. DOF was the giveaway. What most people don’t realize is the dependability and system techs on hand if something goes wrong. It’s like trying to compare a regular sports cars to those on the Indy 500. They’re built to handle rigorous work and they have technicians ready to work on it. The BM may have better resolution or even look the same, but if something goes wrong you can’t just break it open and change something out.
I picked "A" as the BMPCC4K mainly because I know the Alexa with its sensor would have better bokeh, which "B" had in comparison. But, I love seeing videos like this on the BMPCC4K, because as a proud owner of a BMPCC4K, I am even happier knowing I have landed on a great cinema camera. I am continually blown away by what I get out of my P4K. For its price point, it cannot be beat. Hands down. Thanks, Brandon, for making me feel good about my purchase!
I prefer the 'filmic' look that Arri's have...they're my all time favorite cameras...The BMPCC4K is a respectable piece of equipment though and the price is just insane for the IQ and specs...
You completely missed the point of what makes the Alexa great which is dynamic range and color science once you edit the footage. This only showed basic camera features. Try over exposing by 4-5 stops and seeing what you can recover in post! And the blackmagic colors are not good representing reds, and magentas. Love the BlackMagic but if you had both cameras you would reach for the mini everytime, it just works in all situations and yea, the sensor is also designed to have way more surface area per pixel. So the res may be less but the amount of light being pulled in by the alexa is far greater, which is why they get so much truer color and range. Yea, it is all about what you can do in post to create a look for a film and be able to push your footage to create the final look you want. Where the blackmagic is amazing but limited in how far you can push the data u captured...
To be honest the whole way through I preferred the colors and rendering from the bmpcc. Matched with the full set of f0.95 voigtlanders it would have even nicer colors. So happy that I'll be able to put in my order for one this month. I've got an acting gig as a documentary host and it's paying for the camera. I'm so excited
Amazing how close they are. I guessed Camera A as bmcc based on DOF. But great comparison video. Im actually thinking of buying it. Any heat up issues in outdoor?
So close, it's kinda amazing. The depth of field is what really caught my eye in that first scene, then I noticed the red/magenta shift in the blacks from the pocket4k. Wonder if that was from the ND filter with no IR cut filter? Thanks for the comparison.
I'm not convinced with your Cam A and Cam B comparison. Cam B is totally out of focus! Focus up both cameras at the same time and compare them side by side on same shot!.. That would be a true comparison!.. I call for a REDO!!!!
What happens when you over expose, under expose, the latitude of information on the codex's shot from BMPCC RAW and ARRI RAW? Colour separation, etc. How is BMPCC going to hold up against all that.
The BMPCC4K is truly amazing. Although, it’s impossible to trick me with any camera compared with an Alexa (Red, BMD, Panasonic, Sony, etc). Especially outdoors, because the Alexa has a unique greenish/washed out blue sky compared to any other camera (they tend to be more "true to life", punchier with more magenta in the blues). Also, shallower depth of field with a "creamier" look, because of the bigger sensor and the optical lowpass filter (one of the major differences).
In the beginning, Cam A's picture seemed a little bit more softer and nicer. I was SURE that was the ARRI Alexa! And that was not! :o :o :o Great comparison, thank you, Brandon! :)

Well, now we have the 6k Super 35mm camera to try. The only difference is the Alexa is 16bit colour and BM is 12bit. No real low light shooting, no mention of bokeh/depth of field. If you look at the reveal’s background you can see immediately which is filmed on the larger sensor. I’m not sure if the fstop and shutter should have been manipulated to make these more similar or not... but seeing as these weren’t really demanding lighting conditions, I’m not really surprised at the results. It’d be interesting to see some really dark, camp fire, high contrast scenes. However, not to be a total downer; I like your shooting style and this was an entertaining and well put-together video. Thanks for sharing!
For me what gave away Cam A being the 4K first was the highlight bokeh being whiter/harsher. On Cam B the same bokeh is softer with more definition. The second thing I noticed was the color science being more magenta (dead give away as BM loves to shift green), last I realised (dumb moment) the shallower DOF makes Cam B the dead giveaway as the larger sensor. However without looking at the footage so analytically, the two are visually as pleasing, cinematic and creatively identical.
What’s up Brandon?! I want to shoot interviews, UA-cam videos, and lectures....I wanted to know if you would use the bmpcc without the full hand rig build?

You did a better grading than Orlando's. I watched this video on my 55" 4K TV, they both looked 99% the same! Texture, Dynamic range, Colour science. There are some shots I prefer the BMPCC 4K. For Orlando's Comparison Video, Orlando did not grade it like yours, so in his video they both look different in color. This means with better color grading, these two cameras looks almost the same even watching it on a 55" 4K TV. Great Job!
My first answer was camera A was the Alexa and camera B was the BMPCC. I thought camera A's colour and feel was a lot more "filmic" and camera B was more "video-y. It could be just a preference, but the video from the BMPCC looked kind'a better for me.
thanks for comparison, yes I guessed right, B was Arri, image looks a bit better, and A camera image was a bit warmer overall which is a giveaway for bm4k.
I could tell the difference with how the background was rendered, more bokeh and blurred out on the ARRI. However, the Colour sand the overall look of both was still great for cinematic storytelling.
Ah man Brandon I totally guess that poll correct that cam B was Alexa Mini. Even though both images did look a bit similar Cam B images seemed like it handled shadows a little better and just had that Alexa look. But overall great video B BMPCC4K def gives Alexa Mini a good run could use both in a project and have it seamlessly look the same while editing.

Great Job!
Just saw this. Thanks for checking out my vid as well. I definitely don’t color correct anything on my channel. Great eye!
Dude. Your channel has amazing content. Love you’re insight. Had to watch a few videos over though. You’re speech is fast.
DoF gave it out. At first I wanted to think A was Alexa because it was in focus but the I used my head.
My first answer was camera A was the Alexa and camera B was the BMPCC. I thought camera A's colour and feel was a lot more "filmic" and camera B was more "video-y. It could be just a preference, but the video from the BMPCC looked kind'a better for me.
thanks for comparison, yes I guessed right, B was Arri, image looks a bit better, and A camera image was a bit warmer overall which is a giveaway for bm4k.
there is no high dr scene in your test at all...its still quite easy to know which one is Alexa mini if you are constantly working with it.
I got it right lol. Were you using a speedbooster or native m4/3 lens? Great content as usual.
7:55 at hd youtube compression you saying is pretty much the same... noway
this video makes me happier
Great channel awesome video! Subbed.
I could tell the difference with how the background was rendered, more bokeh and blurred out on the ARRI. However, the Colour sand the overall look of both was still great for cinematic storytelling.
A is looking better for me but I thought it was the ALEXA. Big up to BM!
Ah man Brandon I totally guess that poll correct that cam B was Alexa Mini. Even though both images did look a bit similar Cam B images seemed like it handled shadows a little better and just had that Alexa look. But overall great video B BMPCC4K def gives Alexa Mini a good run could use both in a project and have it seamlessly look the same while editing.
but did the cameras look similarly?
