Man those sounds are amazing and the small size of the keyboard seems to be way more versatile than anticipated. Great playing!! Thank you for sharing.
This is a great showcase. Thanks for only playing this great instrument instead of talking, talking, talking. I mean this is music - no need for ramblings. Great skills as well that show what this CP is capable of.
Thanks. Yes, there is a lot of talk going on on UA-cam.. sometimes four minutes for one keyboard shortcut in logic, it’s astounding. Glad you liked the video, it’s an inspiring little instrument
Absolutely the best demo I've seen of any keyboard..awesome playing, great use of the effects and showcases a really powerful instrument at is very best..many thanks for a superb review of the mighty reface cp.
The sounds of this fantastic instrument take my mind way back in the history of legendary keyboard music. Thank for sharing this great video and the music you play.
Thanks!! A wonderful little piece of gear - sounds great, easy to play and very sturdy. I've dragged it everywhere for two years, still in perfect shape
Thank you! Finally someone made a proper demo! I'm sold! I want this to replace an old computer to run vintage sounds on a Doepfer 88 weighted key controller. I have another un weighted 88 on 2nd tier so I do not know where to put this thing! I wish they made a rack module of this!
Yamaha really hit it out of the park with these Reface 'boards. The CP was the first one I got, and I ended up getting the DX and CS too. With a half damping pedal, the CP is fantastic, on it's own or hooked up to full sized keys. the DX is cool in that it allows feedback on all operators so you can get some truly complex FM considering only 4 operator generation. I think better than the DX100 which I used to have back in the day, plus the screen makes editing much easier.. The CS is seriously underrated. Sure it can't do too much in LFO modulation and it isn't velocity sensitive but most early poly synths weren't velocity sensitive either. Very flexible oscillator with it's own dedicated mod section based on the oscillator types and an 18db filter that's got it's own character. The keys feel great on all of them considering they're mini sized. I don't have use for another organ with drawbars, but a buddy has that one and it's also flexible sounding. And they gave all of them a very decent effect section. They are a bit on the high price for what they are and they all have minor drawbacks.... except for the DX you need to use an app to store sounds, DX and CS are only 8 voiced and the looper on the DX is a bit tricky and even tougher to use on the CS. And the Keys, even though the keyboard feels top notch, they are mini so it takes a bit of adjustment. Anything else really starts to feel like a minor quibble. Well done Yamaha! Oh, BTW, this is some serious nice playing considering the mini-keys. Just goes to show it can be played, and played well, but I'm with you, I would have to hook up full sized keys live.
Yeh nice! cant wait just ordered 1 yestaday got it for £245....just wish I had your skills... though I'm sure these sounds will help me along.....Be nice to see some overhead shots on future vids so I can pause and study some of the beautiful chords you demonstate........Good work Johan!
Lovely demo. I picked up one of these used a couple of months ago and am having fun with it connected to my Korg SP-250. The combination can give some nice results. Cool to see you having so much with this unit considering the nice looking pianos that I can see in the background.
I’ve been coveting one of these for a while but this video was the one that convinced me to get my wallet out. What a beautiful demonstration, thank you.
WOW Amazing playing !!!! btw what was that first song, and what song was the clavinet/dist/reverb? or were u just making stuff up? World class playing either way..
It's Spooner Oldham's riff for "Never loved a man" by Aretha Franklin... not sure what key the original was in, but pure Wurlitzer tune without vibrato always brings this to mind!
Great Performance and demo of this surprisingly good sounding little beast! I like your play and would really like to see it from a top view to learn some new things.
An ipad with Garageband and a midi controller make the same sounds, but it's so neat to have it all in one gadget. I'm so tired of screens. I wish there were more of these small keyboards with good sounds.
I don't know if this 'cheat' is still active on current models but....Secret piano sound. Turn off the CP. Place the instrument selector button midway between any two instruments. Turn on the CP. You now have an acoustic piano sound.
I bought one yesterday and yes, it's a little tricky to get the knob to sit between positions, but it's certainly possible, and the secret piano is still there
Imo the best and little known part of this piano is that it can be used as a sound module! It has MIDI and this includes Midi IN! Basically, you can plug an 88 key fully weighted keyboard to it and it will produce sounds! I'm planning to do this with my Kawai CA78 to get these groovy amazing sounds!
@@JonathanRCross if i had space and time enough, i would have bought all of them (....maybe some doubt just on the DX... i was more a Roland D- fan in the Eighties :-) )

Yes I'm aware you can make sounds on the DX, but they are gonna always have that electronic vibe which is useful some of the time but not all the time. the wurli and two Rhodes on here can be used in ANY kind of music, pretty much. If you are a pianist/keyboardist who wants to practice, play in bands, etc, this instrument is far better for that imo.
Are your built-in speakers incredibly quiet like mine, even when turned all the way up? Trying to figure out if mine is defective or misconfigured. Sounds great through an amp or headphones
Wow! You are amazing! I am looking to purchase one of these for portable practicing and composing but I had a major concern which you seem to have no problem with. I see you play standard sized keyboards too with full sized keys, do you find it really difficult to switch between full piano sized keys and the mini keys of the reface CP? This is my biggest concern since I looked at the reface quickly in a store and the keys are super small! But you seem to be playing astoundingly well and accurately on them.
Jade W. Thanks for the kind words! I find it surprisingly easy to adapt to the small keyboard, though I’m still a little hesitant to play it live... the keyboard is definitely the secret weapon of this thing. Compared to any other keyboard this size, the quality and playability is beyond compare, Yamaha apparently decided to make the unit a little more expensive than it could have been by cutting no corners on the keybed and responsiveness of the keys. Great call if you ask me, there’s a real quality feeling to this thing
I'm not a keyboardist by any means. My main instrument is guitar. But I got one of these for home practice, and the key bed is amazingly responsive and not terribly difficult to use despite its size. I am also still very impressed how rock solid the construction of this keyboard is. I don't worry about the durability of it at all. By its size you'd assume that it is a toy, but the feel and sounds are definitely way better quality than a toy.
Yes, 25 years of collecting stuff... clavinet D6, Pianet and CP-70 not in the shot... and a lot of synths... I love it all, hardware, virtual, replications, iPad, computers... it’s all beautiful
I have always dreamed of playing a Rhodes, thing is I don't even know how to play an instrument. I know this is a mini keyboard but you think i could start learning how to play with a yamaha reface cp?
Yeah definitely, good thing about a Rhodes is even simple things sound lovely, especially if you add some reverb. (If you have wider fingers you might prefer something like the Roland GO:Piano, 5 octaves, full size keys, also has Rhodes, Wurly and Clavi sounds. No built in FX except for Reverb) There are some great tutors on UA-cam like Michael New, Bill Hilton (Jazz), I can't think of any others right now, but feel free to hit me up if you want to know more channels that teach in an easy to follow way and make it easy to actually dive in straight away instead of starting you off learning only the boring stuff :P

The great thing about this is that you could buy a cheap MIDI controller to have the key real estate but the CP as the sound engine. Best of both worlds for a fraction of what you'd pay for a Rhodes.
Absolutely not. Buy a keyboard with normal sized keys and most importantly WEIGHTED. I have the reface but it's just as a small portable keyboard for when I travel, you must learn on a proper keyboard first.
