THe time and effort in making these really really great videos is not lost on me. Truly appreciated. This is the kind of stuff that makes UA-cam awesome. THanks again,
outstanding. I love the way you get so many little details into your tutorials. Please carry on doing these, particularly the refinishing videos. They have answered lots of questions I had about how to finish guitars that I have repaired.
Love the amount of detail you took in explaining the buffing process! I buff out scratches in auto body work so I have a fair amount of experience with this. You are using a pretty neat method and explain it well for beginners! Great work man! I’ll definitely subscribe for future content!
Awesome stuff. I am currently building a guitar for my children from scratch. When discussing paint they really wanted an octopus. I had no idea how I was going to do that until I stumbled upon your various videos. Keep it up.
I am using your technique from this video series to repaint my ESP LTD GL200. Just finished primer and so today I will be prepping that surface for paint!
Dude you did an amazing job! And you explained it so well, it is absolutely encouraging! Can’t wait to make my own. And I am not an artist, so I will try a simple design. Thanks soooo much, you rock!
This is an interesting point. I never knew this. I looked at the bottles and saw no indication of silicon but I'll do some more looking. I use these waxes b/c I was referenced to them from a guitar builder I met on UA-cam. The one thing I'll say is that the guitar doesn't have a greasy feel to it at all and the guitars that I have done in the past for clients never said anything negative about how it felt, but thank you for the insight, I'll be sure to find out some more on this.
Thank you for making a tutorial that actally helps. Theres a lot of dummys on facebook and you layed it out to where I can I know do it. Thanksbrother good job
I loved your series and I used all of you material and process suggestions for my strat project. I am having trouble finding the buffer pad attachment for drills. Could you tell me where to get this item.
This is a great series, you have given me some great ideas. Thanks! I do have a question, after you take the steps of waxing the guitar, how often do you have to repeat the wax job? I guess what I'm saying, do you have to maintain it like you do a vehicle?
I could definitely do that. If I get the opportunity to do it then considered it done. I would say that if you want to go all black really you could just follow these videos and achieve the goal. just ignore the paint pen portion and use spray paint. The best way would be to hang the body once its all prepped and go to town spraying it. Once your happy with the color and its dry spray the clear and polish the guitar.
Thank you for the information and your descriptions really helped after watching these videos i feel ready to start the process on one of my guitars. also your design is extremely good and very well painted. thats not something i can do nor will attempt to do, but it should turn out nicely. so again thanks and i will be waiting for the last video to see how it fully turns out.
Your so good at painting ive seen some of your work and its a hell alot better than anything ive ever done lol but im still gonna try to paint my guitar ill even send a link when i complete it
Awesome job and tutorial!! I would love to be able to make such an awesome custom design like you did with your guitar. That will probably never happen however. The video did inspire me to just make a standard color coat on a homemade instrument though - the whole waxing thing is awesome. You got a great channel!
i thought it was going to look kinda cheesey but I gotta say it looks pretty killer man. very nice. you do some damn fine work. very nice. 2 thumbs up man.
Hey Joe! I love your work! You have inspired me to go ahead and start painting my guitar which wasn't easy as I've never had a creative painting urge in my life. I can't draw at all. I've always hated the color of my guitar though. It was a ugly cream color. So I took all the steps you pointed out. I think I'm going to have a lot of trouble getting the electrics back in mine though because it's an epiphone studio dot and there are no back or side panels to open up....yeahhhh it's going to be a
I don't know why I didn't find your vid's earlier! I have often wondered if something like this was possible without having spray equipment. Like for spraying Nitro Cellulose. You're my hero! Can't wait to start my Les Paul project now!
Great videos, I'm building an Explorer with a quilt maple top, dyed transparent black. basically doing the same thing as you did only using polyurethane minwax aerosol, and I'm using Meguiar's Ultimate compound, Ultimate polish, and then ultimate liquid wax. I also will be cleaning the surface with naphtha between sandings, just to make sure it is completely clean. Great artwork, by the way!
Inspirational talent sir. My wife now hates you though as i am probably going to cover not only my guitars but every available surface with posca.... Now to figure out a color scheme for my dogs...
excellent series, went out and bought everything you have, but i am having a problem with the graphic, i fought in iraq and recieved 2 purple hearts but when i draw them i feel i am not doing them justice, could you give me some pointers please, keep up the great work
Very interesting serie of videos, thanks a lot! To your opinion, does that make a difference between spray cans and paint gun? (Primer, clear coats...)
Excellent job. One question....was there a chip in the black paint near the strap button hole? It'd be a shame not to fix that with such a great finish on the guitar.
hey man im now starting a project on an ESP ALEXI 200 (its a v guitar) thanks to you i know how to know!! Thank YOu! Ive wanted to do this my whole like!!!
If it's a guitar builder who advised you to use those waxes, then I assume they are great :) You can go on "Stewart-MacDonald" and see what they advice in the "Trade secret" newsletter section. This had been covered some times. No need to necessarily use their products, but it gives good ideas of what to do and not to. I really like your work! keep making us dream :) Thx
Now when you say put 3 more coats of wax, do you mean repeat the whole 3 wax process again 3 times? Or just take the last regular car wax and apply it 3 more times?
I found this video just in time. I was thinking of doing a automotive spray paint. It's Lexus white gold pearl. Do you think it matters if I use black or grey primer? Will it change the shade of the final color? Thanks for all the info in the video's, that guitar looks excellent.
hi Joe, great tutorial series... I decided to give it a try but my first test on scrap wood pieces show me a bit of a reaction (crackling) when applying the clear krylon on the posca marker art. Any advice on how to avoid something like that to happen?
After watching your videos I decided to buy posca pens and do something with my bass guitar. Now when I'm done with drawing I don't really know what to do next. Can I put one more layer of colorless lacquer on it ? Or should I do the top with a car polish ? And if I do it with the car polish, can I put it on the pickguard too ? Thanks :)
I know that this post is a bit old, but I would like to put some questions. 1 - How much did you spend in all the material to paint the guitar ? 2 - I would like to paint a guitar in black, similar to the one you have on the back of the guitar. What do you think would be a good paint to do this ? Thanks, Pedro
Hey Joseph, one thing you really should pay attention at, when choosing your wax products, is to make sure they don't have any silicon in it at all! You don't want any on a guitar for 2 simple reasons: 1/ if by chance, when you play, you touch your guitar body and get some silicon on your finger, it's really horrible to play the guitar after and 2/ silicon is the worst when you need to repair a guitar (glue don't work anymore). Just thought I would let you know. Great work otherwise, as usual :)
THAT IS AWESOME JO!!! I was wondering to paint an acoustic guitar, same steps? Same clear coat? Can I get a pro to clear it with automotive clear? Thx man!
Hey man, I appreciated all the other videos they were all great. But I have a question about the polishing/waxing aren't the car wax and car products really abrasive on the guitar body itself? Thanks!
No. Just like on a car, these products are designed to remove the very tiny scratches in clear coating without damaging the color or material underneath. Yes, they are technically abrasive products, but it's very fine abrasion. This is why you don't apply pressure as you use these products. Taylor Guitars uses Turtle Wax Express on their guitars. Wax would damage your guitar if it were applied directly to the wood, but since it is being applied to the finish it will not cause any damage. Hope this helps!
4:22 uh, not really. Not any clearer than that first window example. And why wax? I would think you'd just polish down the lacquer until the surface is smooth. That's all shiny is. A surface that is literally flat, no porous areas or bumps. So, why wax? I don't want wax or any film on my guitar. I guess I need to keep watching to see if that comes off or what.
I know, I'm sorry its taking so long. Not to give excuses but please understand UA-cam isn't my full time job. Editing videos especially these tutorial base ones take a lot of my time and the only time I get now is during the weekends. Currently I'm strap to the floor with other art and design related projects. I'm working my hardest to get this video series done. Sorry for the inconvenience. Part 9 is going to be my next video I upload Promise! =D
Hey Joseph, I hope you read this I'm very inspired by your Videos and want to get such pens, too Can I paint my xbox with it without that the heat will destroy the paint? (And wax it, too) Also, can I learn / train by using felt pens or something like that? They are not as expensive as the Poscas :s Great job on the Videos, I like to watch every single one! You may not have a million views, but those who view are artists who are newly inspired by your Art! thanks a million!
Hi Joe, Really like your tutorials! I have 2 questions though.1: Do you have any experience combining Posca pens and Molotow pens on this type of projects? Most of my pens are Molotow, but for the brighter/less saturated colours I prefer Posca. Will they work together?2: I hear a lot of guitar people say you shouldn't use car wax for polishing a guitar. You've used this in your video. What's your opinion about this?
I just finished waxing. I followed all the instructions to the T (used a solid color paint, not Pascal Pens) and so far the paint looks fantastic. Joe, thank you so much for the instructional videos, they are accurate, concise, easy to follow, and produce excellent results. You're a great artist.
well I would do a test sample on a piece of wood. But I would say that Krylon would world work. Ive made the mistake once using Sharpie permanent and spray a water base poly of it and it bleed and ruined the paint job. so do a couple test sample to be safe
Yes, and quite frankly it would be much less work as the only prep you would need to do before painting is just priming the bare wood. Then follow the procedure and the results should be the same!
thanks for the reply :) i already figured it would just work. so i made and painted my own longboard, you can check the timelapse on my channel :) (that is if ur interested :P)
StanDrawly I figured you'd gotten it by now, I like answering unanswered questions just in case someone else is wondering the same thing :D I watched your video, that thing is badass man! Love the unique design and the artwork turned out great on it!
I use posca, I do a light 1st and 2nd acrylic clear mist coat, then once that has dried a couple of wet coats, problem I get is the black and metallics Lose colour, blacks show pen marks, metallics lose tint, I've tried 2 different makes of acrylic spray, same problem, do you get the same problem? I've been told there is a sealer I can use but I think this is for acrylic paintings, I'm reluctant to use it on a guitar. Any ideas?
THe time and effort in making these really really great videos is not lost on me. Truly appreciated. This is the kind of stuff that makes UA-cam awesome. THanks again,
So happy I found this, I was extremely afraid to do this but you took all the mystery out! God bless you man
outstanding. I love the way you get so many little details into your tutorials. Please carry on doing these, particularly the refinishing videos. They have answered lots of questions I had about how to finish guitars that I have repaired.
It's so hard to search for your videos. Thanks for keeping them up all these years.
What a fantastic series explaining everything to complete detail . Really , truly , excellent work. Thanks for sharing your gifts.
your tutorials are the most in-depth and helpful ones I've come across! Thanks so much man.
Thank you!! =D I'm glad you found it entertaining and helpful!
Love the amount of detail you took in explaining the buffing process! I buff out scratches in auto body work so I have a fair amount of experience with this. You are using a pretty neat method and explain it well for beginners! Great work man! I’ll definitely subscribe for future content!
Thanks for all you hard work. Cannot believe someone called you and a-hole...Booooooo!!! This series has been really eye opening. Thanks again man!!!
Awesome stuff. I am currently building a guitar for my children from scratch. When discussing paint they really wanted an octopus. I had no idea how I was going to do that until I stumbled upon your various videos. Keep it up.

Nicely done! I very much appreciate the level of detail you put into these videos!
Just Mindblowing. I´m selling paint every day and this is the best way to use it!
Thank you!

Hey Joseph, thank u so much 4 inspiring me 2 start a project on my own. U r amazing man.
Thank you for your support!
Can I skip the swirl x and just use the other two wax's and is it fine if I use paste wax ?
So cool! GREAT job with your videos! I will be trying this .......fingers crossed!!
the metallic finish looks sick.
tons of work man, awesome guitar, great talent! u got a new fan :)

i thought it was going to look kinda cheesey but I gotta say it looks pretty killer man. very nice. you do some damn fine work. very nice. 2 thumbs up man.
Sweet video! Can't wait to start on one of my old guitars!
Thank you!!
You can probably get away with any brand of Lacquer. Clear Gloss is just the finish that I get the lacquer in.
Loved this :) you should do another but... do the whole guitar. Neck, head, front and back of the body.

Hey great job! but i got a question. What would be the easiest way to do a checkerboard design on a electric guitar?
Beautiful work! Thanks for posting
when will you be posting part 9???? please!! i wanna see the final product!!!
Inspirational talent sir. My wife now hates you though as i am probably going to cover not only my guitars but every available surface with posca.... Now to figure out a color scheme for my dogs...
Great job man. Thx for sharing your method
You definitely got skill...fantastic looking!

hey man im now starting a project on an ESP ALEXI 200 (its a v guitar) thanks to you i know how to know!! Thank YOu! Ive wanted to do this my whole like!!!
Is it clear because the wax has filled in the low spots? or is it free of wax at the end? thx
Hey man loved this series! I was wondering where you got your buffer?
nice video love the finish. did you use varnish after painting it ?
Looks great dude.

That was awesome man!

Make a part 9 how to put everything back on like the pickups and neck! Please!
Great videos! Great work!
Soon I hope =D
Im going to re shoot part 9 to show how to solder the wires back together. I have Pictures on Facebook that you can see.
Is this step necessary ? I mean do you have to do this to protect your design or is it just for the shiny effect ?
After watching your videos I decided to buy posca pens and do something with my bass guitar. Now when I'm done with drawing I don't really know what to do next. Can I put one more layer of colorless lacquer on it ? Or should I do the top with a car polish ?

When will you upload the part 9???
Can you buy the power drill with the buffer? If so, where can I buy one? Please reply
How can the drill and buffer be both not required yet also necessary?
I really enjoy the background music. :)
Thank you!
well I would do a test sample on a piece of wood. But I would say that Krylon would world work. Ive made the mistake once using Sharpie permanent and spray a water base poly of it and it bleed and ruined the paint job. so do a couple test sample to be safe
Those wax products have any alternatives? Like products that are as good as the Meguiar's are. Because in my country I do not have that brand.
would this whole process from beginning to end, also work on a wooden plank?
Yes, and quite frankly it would be much less work as the only prep you would need to do before painting is just priming the bare wood. Then follow the procedure and the results should be the same!
thanks for the reply :) i already figured it would just work. so i made and painted my own longboard, you can check the timelapse on my channel :) (that is if ur interested :P)
