Today I'm chatting with y'all about my experience and advice being a woman + woman of color in the workplace. The purpose of me sharing my experience is to provide my viewpoint and hopefully help you feel not alone if you're going through something similar. My intention is to simply share (although not as severe as others may have experienced) and so if you too experience something similar in the workforce, you will not be totally blindsided. In the end, we all share the same world so spread peace and love! It does not matter what color your skin is or how light/dark it may be, what truly matters is your heart, integrity, character and morals.
I would love to hear from y'all: what experiences have you gone through. how do you deal with discrimination and how can we each make a difference?
Woman of color (as defined by The Women of Color Network www.wocninc.org): The political term “women of color” surfaced in the violence against women movement in the late seventies to unify all women experiencing multiple layers of marginalization with race and ethnicity as a common issue.

Hey Stephanie, I can completely relate to the youthful comments constantly. I have experienced it my whole life. I will be 40 in February and people always are surprised when I say my son will be graduating college in December. I constantly get you can’t have a child that old, you look like your in your 20’s or you look like a baby. It gets annoying and people’s ignorance is out of control some days. I just focus on my own life and if I don’t have anything positive I don’t say anything.

What you said in the video is so true! Right now I am looking for advice about accounting industry then I saw your videos. So inspiring and helpful. Also I'm so happy to see somebody like you come up and share experiences at work, instead of fashion and shopping.

Yeah the stereotypes that come with being a woman of color in any corporate setting can be overwhelming, if you let it. I’ve learned that what’s more important is being yourself. That is the key to getting over this issue. Our differences in background, abilities, moral, skills, prospective, etc are what makes us human and not machines.

Ashley Kilpatrick very well said love ❤ we can't control other peoples biases and prejudices. All we can do is control how we choose to react.

Stephie, all your videos are so useful and inspirational. I still remembered the first time I saw your video was during my senior year in college. At that time I was trying to get an internship so I was so helpless and anxious. I came across of your videos in UA-cam and followed your tips. And I got the offer that I want. I will start my full-time offer 2 months later in my dream firm. Thanks Stephie for all these career advice and chat. 😘😘😘

Thanks for this, Steph. I am half Filipino senior studying accounting and I have experienced a lot of what you’ve said personally about being a woman in the accounting field from the internships I’ve worked at. I see how important it is to learn to speak up and be confident so thank you for all these tips!

Thank you for sharing your experience on this topic. I am a USAF active duty Veteran now University student. I am a mature Undergraduate attending University in the United Kingdom, my degree program is BSc Accounting and Finance. I am quite curious about this topic because I am a Black American Woman and in this vast career field I am noticing the managers and higher job positions there are only some women and especially a few Black and other Women of Color.

Tara G I completely agree! Women of color and women are sorely under represented in management positions. My hope is that we all can support and encourage one another no matter the color of our skin.

I completely agree Tara! I am a black WOC with over 10 years in accounting. I once listened to a Harvard Business Review podcast on the subject and the number of people like us exiting the industry to begin their own company is astounding. If I had to do it all over again, i will go to a different field where promotability is less dependent upon the majority and their unconscious biases.

Stephie good video, I dealt the same treat like you have when I got promoted so quick at my job. Talking about high heels love wearing them, there's a time I want to take that heels off and smashed to their faces. The hard part sometimes is your own color sister do that envious towards you, you are right about is not about the color it's about what you and how you look.

Thank you so much for posting this video, Stephie! This is a topic that I've always had hesitations/worries about, as I am also a woman of color who is soon to begin my career in the public accounting field. I feel like I can really relate to your videos, and I really appreciate how real you are with your videos. Being assertive and speaking up is something that I still need to work on - thank you for addressing this and how important it is to own your career!

Thank you so much love! It's still something I continue to practice, speaking up and being assertive, but it definitely gets easier over time! You got this 😉

Amen! I think that this is a problem in the western world. I also dress feminine to work & try to look good. It seems to be mostly white Americans who comment; "who are you trying to impress..why do you wear makeup?" I wear light makeup & office appropriate clothing that covers most of my skin. I am mixed (American of Latina, Russian, Spanish and a little bit of East Asian descent) and am also mistaken for a 22 year old at 30. It seems like Hispanic & slavic cultures understand a woman's need to look good and take care of herself. I know it's not PC but I really think it's an American feminist type of mentality that to be taken seriously you have to look very casual, almost sloppy to fit in. You are seen as a weirdo for putting any effort into the way you look (maybe there is some jealousy there). I also get shamed for packing healthy lunches to work while other gorge on fast food and junk daily. It's ridiculous! It's like some people never leave the middle school mindset behind. Overall, I think the best you can do is deal with it for now.. life is short & someday you will age/become busy with kids & people will be less threatened by the way you look.
