I generally build 1/72 scale aircraft and Foil is my preferred medium for NMF finishes. Once I stumbled across Tamiya Metallic Silver it has become my " Go To " paint for panels which can be difficult to foil successfully. It's sheen is very close to the aluminium foil. When used alongside foil it may vary in tone to the foil, but replicates the sheen of the foil very closely giving a very believable result. I've also used Tamiya Metallic Silver over a base of Tamiya Gloss white to achieve lighter tones while maintaining the metal like sheen.
Thanks for the great Reviews and tips.
    🍻

Loved your test. So few in modelling ever test or consider spray cans. I love almost everything about Tamiya spray cans (except their lacquer’s reaction to putty, which I minimize by seriously polishing the putty with a cloth, and using a light, then heavy coat). I never could get around to the gradual coat build up of airbrushes, because my models are always heavily modified. I prefer a thick solid coat that then shrinks: Spray cans work differently... I also like the absence of dust particles in spray cans, the much better coverage of large surfaces, the nicer feathering of the spray “edges”, the simplicity and reliability, and finally the resistance to handling. I will use a spray gun for unavailable color variations. Tamiya’s TS-83 spray cans are the only reason I can model bare metal aircrafts. Everything else looks terrible in comparison, particularly Tamiya’s regular silvers spray cans. A model can never be too devoid of out of scale silver grains, which is is why TS-83 beats everything. I was surprised to see even Alclad metallic silver, with a gloss black base, looked very different (to me) in your camera: Slightly darker and less sparkling. TS-83 is so good , I would gladly pay $100 a can if I had to. That’s how highly I think of it. Thanks for your video.

How do you solve the issue of putting decals on your model and weathering after splraying ithe model with TS-83? I'm beginner, and so the question is whether there is an option to have good looking TS-83 on a model with such after effects.

    • @wrathofatlantis2316
      @wrathofatlantis2316 2 роки тому +1

@@giveall9695 I usually don't do much weathering on metal finish aircrafts, so I can't answer that... One essential trick to using TS-83 I have discovered is base coating it with a Revell spray can of either steel or aluminium colour. These are those all-blue acrylic spray cans: They are the best thing ever to undercoating TS-83, because TS-83 reacts unevenly to just about everything else... With Revell spray can undercoating, all my TS -83 issues disappeared, and you can mask off the Revell undercoating to get different metal panel shades in one single step. Metal multi panel finishes are now easier than camo for me, and I get perfect results every time...

money aside its probably the nicest gold paint i have ever seen, making those side by side comps really helped also. Btw that actually looks like it became a real silver tea spoon after the expensive silver paint. The price is too much though realistically.

I think the TS-84 Gold is phenomenal. You just spray it and the piece looks like it's made out of solid gold. I've been astounded by how easy it can be used to get some really good looking results. I spray it over the recommended TS-14 btw.

I've sprayed TS-83 once. was not prepared for $20. Hobby town said it was because the paint has actual metal flake particles. LP-48 sparkling silver is just as good in my opinion. $4 for a 10 ml pot, 60/40 with tamiya lacquer thinner with retarder you can have 80 ml of sparkling silver for your airbrush with much much less waste. smaller spray pattern (less overspray), no wasted paint in the bottom of the can when the can runs out of propellent. no inconsistent air pressure. Spray cans have much more pressure at the start of a can than at the end.

I'm with you but I know quite a few Hobbyist who just can't have an airbrush for what ever reason so I do these reviews for those out there. But I am personally a big proponent of airbrushing. And yes Tamiya jar paints airbrush great.

I bet if you clear coated the ones you shot over a dull prime coat they'd come out fine. Filling in those pits that the dull finish has would deepen the finish and shine it up nice! Great video sir!

Sure Alclad Duraluminum over gloss black matches the $20 TS-83, and thank you for the demonstration, I prefer the airbrush alclad over the Tamiya spray can, but your comparison to find a cheaper alternative fails because TS-83 is 3.38 oz ($20) vs the Alclad bottle which has only 1 oz ($8 ).

Rattle cans have their uses and place in the hobby no doubts. Anything more than basing or general coating though I have to go Airbrush, Rattle cans are just too sloppy and require far more working than Airbrush after the paint dries. I remember the days when you only had the option for Spray cans unless you had money for an airbrush setup, the difference was night and day on the end results, that said you can get Super high quality paint work from a rattle can if you have the skill and patience to work it. Great video! Tamiya is still hanging onto that crown over the normal hobby paint lines, Alclad's though have become my preference for a few styles and I almost have their full paint lineup.

Tamiya spray is really expensive on your side of the pond.

They're actually very inexpensive except for these 2 cans. It's the pigments in these that raised the cost

These are way overpriced for what you get. I’d rather achieve the same results with Vallejo Metallics of Alclad for half the price.

Do you have the ability to remove comments? Anyways, buy 4 of these and have them last you 3-4 kits, or buy an entry level airbrush and a few bottles of alclad, and that would most definitely last you longer! Not to say these are bad or anything, it’s just utterly disgusting you have to pay that much for a spray can that won’t last long.. so sorry you had to witness your first spam-mail-bot.

Yeah I removed and reported that comment. I've had a few but I'm scrubbing them. But yeah at $40 to buy these there's way more options to choose from

Also, at 11:38, that is only because the undercoat is an enamel. Lacquers are very strong paints compared to enamels, so the gold lacquer basically ate up the black enamel underneath it. But I don’t know, maybe Tamils doesn’t mix with other brands, just like how Alclad hates anything other than itself.

@@gat-x105strikegundam5 It is not Tamiya. You can get away with spraying Lacquer over Enamel with an airbrush by controlling the wetness of the paint hitting the surface but with a spray-can... anything but water base paint on Enamel from a spray-can is gonna be disastrous because you dont have control with spray-can. Good thing is, you can de-can the paint in a spray-can and use them in airbrushes 😉
