Harri, this song was recorded for the Season 2 Premiere episode of "Miami Vice". Glenn Frey (pronounced "FRY", like French Fry, not "Fray") portrayed the character of Jimmy the pilot in a Season 1 episode titled "Smuggler's Blues" (Season 1 Episode 15), which was based on his song of the same name.
Great flashback to the 80s and Miami Vice. Glenn Frey actually appeared a couple times on the show. Crockett and Tubbs were the coolest detectives around. Great song and great reaction. 👍
Crockett and Tubbs and Miami Vice gave birth to so many Glenn Frey songs.....and....so many neon colored clothes. God but I miss the 70s and 80s. This song almost has a mournful sound, but it is so haunting and beautiful. Miami, Nice!!!!!
Good stuff, Dave...the sax in this song is it's calling card. When Frey and Henley started releasing singles from their solo careers, it was easy for me to see how each had left their thumbprint on certain Eagles songs from their different styles and sound. Great reaction and perspective, Harri, spot on!
This song is soooooo 80's! It gets me so overly nostalgic every time I hear it, it almost hurts. I miss the 80's. It reminds me, as a kid back then, I had a sweater with a drawing of the 2 Miami Vice characters as cartoon mice and it was written Miami Mice.😄 I loved that sweater!
The opening of the video is a direct homage to Jazz saxist Sonny Stitt who practiced his instrument on the Brooklyn Bridge late at night so he could blow as powerfully as necessary without complaint.
The late great Glenn Frey was originally from Detroit and was steeped in classic RnB like his fellow Detroit rocker Bob Seger. You could hear it in much of his solo work like this one. He had a saxophone in many of his solo hits
I don’t know if it’s just because I associate it with the lyrics & video, but whenever I hear that sax I feel like I’m walking down a city street. Power of association I suppose.
This was actually produced as part of the soundtrack for a Miami Vice episode as were several other great songs "Smugglers Blues" by Glen Frey and "Coming on the air tonight" by Phil Collins Etc.
Good request Dave. I still haven't gotten over Glenn's passing. Wonderful reaction Harri! This is a great song. Part of Glenn's solo career.Harri yes the 80s vibe.
Great request, Dave Bzen! Harri, Glenn Frey dabbled in acting, too, appearing in TV series episodes for "Miami Vice" (the TV soundtrack album this song was made for) and "Nash Bridges" (also starring "Miami Vice" star Don Johnson) and the Tom Cruise movie "Jerry Maguire." "You Belong to the City" reached No. 2 on the Billboard magazine Hot 100 pop singles chart, and was kept out of the top spot by Starship's "We Built This City." (A great pop week for urban dwellers! :-) )
Actually like his SMUGGLER'S BLUES a bit better - as noted earlier, both were featured on Miami Vice tv episodes, especially the episode where he played 'the Smuggler'.
Written by the late Glenn Frey, RIP, and Jack Tempchin. JT wrote a few songs when GF was with The Eagles 🦅 You Belong to the City was written for the TV 📺 show Miami Vice starring Don Johnson. This song also appeared in the GF album The All-Nighter. I remember this song on 80s pop radio 📻. Don Johnson sang the song Heartbeat 💓. He attended ACT in my hometown San Francisco. 🌁 After graduation, he moved to Hollywood. He married actress Melanie Griffith, daughter of actress Tippy Herrin, who started in the Alfred Hitchcock film 🎥 The Birds 🐦. Actress Dakota Johnson is the daughter of DJ and MG. After Miami Vice, Don Johnson returned to SF and starred in Nash Bridges with Cheech Marin. I did see DJ a during that series. He was nice to me! 👌 Glenn Frey appeared in 1 episode. GF and Jack Tempchin wrote a song for the movie 🎥 Thelma and Louise. Suggested video 📹: Glenn Frey sings Part of Me, Part of You.

Amazing how many great songs came out of that show.
Hi Mr. Craig, I agree with the mispronunciation, it seems to happen here a lot.. ♠W.G.

Starsky and Hutch
Rock In Peace Glen..
Oh how I miss the 80s Glenn Frey! He was an awesome member of the Eagles and as a solo artist. And my God he was perfect eye candy
South Florida in the 80s.....whoowee.....fun times.

PNC, thank you, and I agree about Frey and Henley being central to The Eagle's overall sound.

My favorite solo song of his❤😊
This single was for the tv series Miami Vice. Glen also has a single from the movie Beverly Hills Cop, The Heat Is On. Another great song!!
Believe this is Glenn Frey of the Eagles, strange, I never realized it was him. Nice tune, and I do remember it well. Thanks Harri
Very nice song Dave. I do love Glenn Frey.

oh man... that flash on 'tin pan alley' brings back the memories.. awesome bar. god, i miss those years.
Loved this song by Glenn Frey, Miami Vice, was 1982. He is missed in the Eagles.
1985
@@007ndc Oh, I thought releasing were in 1982, so I was wrong, thanks for telling me.

Ohhhh that Miami Vice swagger. Glenn was smoken hot in the 80s
This is a perfect hit song. Great hook and legendary vocals.
I always wished I was that cool.
Definitely need to check out the song Smugglers Blues.
He starred recently in "Watchmen" series and "Knives Out" movie
Good request Dave. I still haven't gotten over Glenn's passing. Wonderful reaction Harri! This is a great song. Part of Glenn's solo career.Harri yes the 80s vibe.
baker street - great song
No shortage of shoulder pads in the 80s.
The decade of stylish poser football players. 🍻
Song is awesome. It was great for my night owl years. Perfect soundtrack for the streets.
Now I'm going to have to go watch a few Miami Vice episodes.
this song, You belong to the city is on miami vice soundtrack as well.
This and Cold Chisel's "Saturday Night" are my favourite songs for that 'late night in the city' feel.
Don Johnson was Huge in the 70s 80s and 90s, but not alot since that I know of. very good actor.
Don Johnson did record an album and here's the shocker...Stevie Ray Vaughan played guitar on it. I don't know if it was every track or just a few

Summer and Fall of 1985 there wasn't anything cooler or as hot as Miami Vice in the cultural zeitgeist. So hot that the TV soundtrack went to #1
Now I gotta go watch Miami Vice
1986------------from " Miami Vice " --------I'M A CITY BOY, ALL THE WAY ! WOULDN'T HAVE IT ANY OTHER WAY !! -------------------MJL, 77 Y/O
When you said Goodbye
bill bergman on sax; v under known saxophone man.....from KC i believe; obscure regional sax dude who was found
Harri, please do Smugglers Blues by Glen it was the theme song for the 1st season of Miami Vice
Actually like his SMUGGLER'S BLUES a bit better - as noted earlier, both were featured on Miami Vice tv episodes, especially the episode where he played 'the Smuggler'.
