The 9 and 2 definitely have an advantage for winter survival chores. Two of the very best! The 8 is a better summer choice, especially climbing rocks. A thicker 8 would be more competitive for winter.
Wonderful big knife philosophy! Wonderful review. Personal choice is I just run a Gerber prodigy on my belt always. My multi tool has a small companion blade. If I want to go big, I have a Fiskars 14" hatchet and saws. But that's a bunch of tools for me🙄 so my respect to the one tool dudes!
I own the junglas and bk9 both great knives. The AK 8 does come in magnacut (currently sold out) and will be coming in cpm 3v. To maintain knives I learned a trick from wrangle star he used a tin ,old t shirts and ballistol soaked the rag in it and leaves it in the tin then just wipe down your blades periodically it works great on leather too.
chopping mainly has to do with balance and where the weight displacement is so a longer blade will be more forward weight easier to chop. I would say for the stake making and battening blade geometry and thickness for sure plays a part. fine work and carving blade geometry is king. The forward choil if used will make fine work a little easier usually. All these blades are excellent but as always it comes down to the right tool for the job and as always the tool you currently have is the right tool.. Great Video!
Would have loved to see the TOPS Tahoma Field Knife thrown into the comparison mix. That’s the one in this size range that I consistently hear the most praise for and I’d love to know how it performs next to these options before putting money down on it.
I actually owned one a few years ago. Nice knife. The Architect 8 blade in 1095 is made by TOPS. I'd say I like the 8 a little better, but Tahoma is a very good knife.
While I like all 3, I’ll take the Junglas every time only for one reason. Blades over 6 inches should never have a skeletonized handle. Just my personal opinion. I’m not beating on a knife and having a weak point. Main reason I like the esse knives.
Good test Dan! What is the spine thickness of the Architect 8? Is the BK8 1/4"? The ESEE Junglass and Junglass 2 are both 3/16". More mass = more weight: easier chopping. But for me edge geometry is a bigger consideration: Full flat grind vs convex vs hollow will perform differently.
And the winner is ... The Terrava Skrama ! 😂 Just kidding brother , I love Becker knives they come with a better geometry and price. Unfortunately you gotta buy scales cause those plastic scales are just too thin and slick. I actually only own 1 big blade which is an Ontario ...I think it's an Sp5 BOWIE style blade, it's a wicked slicer . Nice review .
Hard to pick a favorite with your kids. I own the esse 2 myself, so it has my vote. I've never handled the other brands in full disclosure. I enjoyed the video. Take care Dan.🇺🇲🔪🔥🌲
The Bk9 Won...i have alot of Knives i have the KAbar Bk 2 and Bk 7 both are Great Knives...but i was going to Stop buy Knives because i just dont use them enough and i was going give them to my kids when i pass away something to remember Grandpa..now i was thinking on getting the Bk9...there just something about Knives i really like...i got over 25 knives from Tops to Esee and Kabar and others and it alway seem like there is something better and i have to go get it...and this Video gots me thinking of getting the Bk9..Thank you for the Great Video
It's a great knife and I think you will really like it a lot! Recommend you also get the micarta handles on Amazon, and some Rit Dye. Dye the handles to your color choices.
@@ochocobushcraft1742 I Mention I have the Bk2 and Bk7 I got the Handles and like you I sanded them a little and put some red dye on them it didnt make them red but it made like a thick reddish deep Brown they look great I did this around 2017...so Great minds think alike.....but if you can get and Try a Ontario Sp5 Knife its not very Expensive and I fond it to be a Great Big Knife....its lighter then the Bk9 and just as Big people don't give it a Chance...and it Chops great and holds a Good Edge.I think it will surprise you....well thanks for Replying back

Interesting to compare these 3, thx :) Also interesting how sometims you said one is better than the others and how I "feel" seeing your actions (impossible to feel with videos :)) Maybe something is missing here, comparing prices and how you feel (comfort) the handles (as I also did I changed the original ones for my BK9 ... micarta ones are soooooooo better but it's also more money to spend ...)
That was a good review. Personally I see all three knives for different purposes. If I were going to a location where I was going to be setting up a camp, clearing the land, doing a lot of work and not traveling around the countryside then I would take the Esee. But like you said if you're going to be traveling around and you're not too sure if you need a large knife then the eight sounds like a better idea. But for me the Becker bk9 is what they call it, a combat bowie. If I was in a dangerous situation where I have to survive but there is a threat that your life could be in danger I would prefer to have the bk9, for its maneuverability in the hand and it's stabbing ability which it is better at than the other two.
@@ochocobushcraft1742 Winter weather dose make haveing chopping power very importaint. you almost have a knife for every season! just got to find one more lol.
My guess was the bk9 lol and this comes down to geometry and thickness behind the edge, stock thickness, and grind. The bk9 and junglas/2 have always been outstanding knives and will remain in the outdoor arena for years to come I would guess. The ak8 looks good and im sure feels good with the lowest weight but the slightly thinner stock may be making the difference, they might as well make a 1/4" version of the ak8 🤣.

Thank you very much for this nice head to head review of these knives.
Thumbs up!
Thank you, greatly appreciated!

My standard carry also includes a folding saw, and Small hatchet. Only time I do the one tool option is climbing.
Thanks Dan, all look like very serviceable blades and don't think I would be under-knifed with any of them.
Exactly. All are very good performers, and I'm already planning on taking the 8 camping in the spring when I no longer need a big winter knife.

Hey Dan, good to see you! Keep up the good, informational videos.

Nicely done, Dan! 👍

All 3 are absolutely excellent, but I believe the BK9 is probably the best one tool option if there is such a thing.

BK9 and AK8 are both 3/16.. geometry and blade grind definitely factor in.as you point out.
Please do a “Round 2” on all 3 of these again with more robust tasks. 🫵🏽💪🏽👍🏽
(Just picked up the AK8 can’t wait to give it a run through)

Thank you! I remember that SP5, that is a wicked looking knife.
What happened to your Tops Armageddon? It’s grind is similar to the Architect 8. I would like to have seen how it compared. Great review.
Thank You! It just didn't perform as well as the BK9, or the Esee Junglas 2, over time so i sold it.

Excellent choices for each situation. Well thought!
Good vid. All 3 blades seem to be good. be hard to pick just one.
Yeah, i can never stay with just the 9 or 2. The 8 will be more of a summer knife for me. just didn't have enough size to keep up overall for winter.

@@Robertssurvivalsystems A knife for every season, lol! I like it!
@@ochocobushcraft1742 That could be a good project. 4 seasons , 4 kits. maybe even get 4 hatchets to pair up too.
Interesting. My take-away is that none of these knives failed (however that might be defined) any of the tests.
They all did a very good job. Would recommend any of the three.

One knife you dhould habe included in that is rtak 2
I've never purchased one. Perhaps someday I'll have the chance to try one out.
J2 is too heavy. I think they should skeletonize the handles
