- The wonderful Steve Vai talks about his musical interaction and experience with fellow Zappa bandmates, as well as touring and transcribing the Frank Zappa Guitar Book.
Thank you Chanan and Steve. I can listen to Steve talk about Frank all day long and for Steve to give you these gifts for the history books, is an amazing compliment to your dedication and musical knowledge Chanan! Well done!
Chanan you are one of the most humble and expert interviewers I've ever watched. You know how to ask the right questions, and more importantly, how to not interrupt and let the magic flow. When Vai says he doesn't do any Zappa interviews anymore except for you, this says it all. Can't wait for the book, "My Time with Zappa" by Steve Vai with Chanan Hanspal. complete with transcriptions and everything!
Loved this interview - I hope Vai will write a book about his Zappa days.
More Zappa content. Fantastic!
Those interviews are very precious !
Oh yeah! Another Zappa talk. I can't wait to hear it. Huge thanks to both of you for this talk!
(By the way, I am learning to play Black Page #1. Or should I say I am attempting to learn it 😅)
Thanks for tapping into Steve like no one else. You are now his official one stop shop.
Abuganza!!! More Zappa and much more !!!! Keep up the great work
Steve is always terrific and you get the best from him. An interview just about the BEAT tour and learning and arranging would be great stuff as well.
52:36 - absolutely, Chanan & Steve, so interested in these band dynamics! I saw the band in '82 in London, still an amazing musical memory!
All the best guys!
Steve is the best, Thanks Chanan for asking the best questions.
Love to hear Vai talk Zappa. Thank you.
Two perfect gentlemen speaking about an amazing topic which they both love. That hour went by fast! Thank you, both. Wouldn't mind getting more.
Many thanks for the new episode! Music is the best!
Always interesting to hear Chanan and Steve talk music and FZ . Thanks Chanan & Steve .
Gentleman, Thank you for the interview and FZ stories! Much appreciated!!
Excellent interview with a master. And Korvettes...that's a throwback. Thank you!
Korvettes, remember it well.
I just love this. I love hearing stories about music. Thank you Chanan
Thanks!
Thanks to the both of you for this!
Such a treat, great rapport you two, thanks Chanan,
What a breath of fresh air to hear two brilliant and respectful people sharing thoughts on music and experience ! Many Thanks ! Love from Quebec !
Fantastic interview. Love hearing Steve talking about his formative years with Frank and the other musicians in the band.
Two amazing guys. Kudos to you for this gift of an interview!
Brilliant! Thank you both.
Great interview
Thank you both
YAY! Another one! Looking forward to digging in!
It's always a joy to listen to Mr. Vai in long format conversations :)
Deeply interesting and inspiring - Thanks
Amazing! Thank you so much, Chanan.
Vai talking about Zappa? So fun
This is a Great interview.
“I’ve got transcriptions of THIS” (waves hand)
Gave me chills
Thanks Chanan
One of the best Interviews with Uncle Steve I've ever heard - nicely done - basic take-away for me - this stuff is real, but the problem is, not only is it hard to be able to play it and understand it, but it's just as hard to be able to even talk about it. No wonder Steve is always careful about getting too heavily into this stuff in most interviews … since it's nearly impossible to avoid sounding like yet another Fashionable, Emperor's Clothes, Space-Cadet, and that's even regardless of all the evidence to the contrary.
keep 'em coming, Chanan - Steve gave you the green light
Alright!!!! Listening to this at work!!
So ninterresting! like it a lot! and I miss Frank! ....the world without Zappa is incomplete!
Guys with light blue hair. I've seen the shows - in "a place that wasn't built for music" (FZ) - and Steve, always left stage, was his own Paganini fireworks factory. Especially with Vinnie doing this thing (on banana yellow kit). Unforgettable.
This is kinda beautiful. :)
Tales from the vault 🎉
Hi Steve 👋 was talking about you today with a friend 😀 we both agree you are fab❤
I agree with most of the comments. And moreover the diction and vocabulary of our 2 friends are perfect for the French (aging 😊) "girl " I am...Perfect video.
As Steve said
he wants to use this format to talk to Chanan, and only to Chanan
ABOUT FRANK ZAPPA
And both promises are:
It wasn't the last time
both apparently have to say so much more about FZ
I will wait and listen.
Thank you both
Always an amazing conversation. What a brilliant duo.
"Giant candy store" 😄
Yeah!
I could do with a contact to Steve, as I would like to interview him and not mention Frank at all. As much as I love Frank's music, and I am seriously familiar with his catalogue whilst he was alive. I just think Steve would have a lot to say about his own life, and I'd just love to hear things he'd have to talk about what hasn't been asked about him before.
The big note!
I saw you play in the Singleton in Swansea
I'd love to hear Steve talk more about the Skyscraper era. Everyone wants to know about Zappa, including me. Similarly Eat 'em comes up a lot. But did we ever really understand why Billy didn't do the Skyscraper tour? How did the album come to be produced by Steve and Roth without Templeman? It's an amazing album, but doesn't seem to get the love it deserves. Just a thought.
I have an 1982 pressing of FZGB. A prized possession. Unfortunately with all my scribbles on it from my youth.
Yeah yeah Steve. Now who was the best musician in the 82 band and what does he think of the premature collapse of the 88 band?
doh....I was hoping for some Epidemics or Alcatrazz stories........
Hearing Steve talk about his days as a session musician would be cool, especially the PIL Album .
1982 Dagmar Din Din
Little bit of clickbait here.
He never talks about fellow bandmates.
