    No issues at all with my u siphon in an IBC tank setup using clay pellets (Hydroton) for 4 years straight. For the intake I used a PVC Pipe with slits cut into to bottom of the pipe and ran it down the middle of the grow bed.

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  3 роки тому

      Hey Ernie.
      The radial flow settlers work a little better than the swirls from what I've read & from what folks that have tried both tell me. I'm not really sure it makes that much difference for us backyarders using DIY jobbies to tell you the truth as neither will collect all the solids.

    Hey Rob, you might want to checkout Wrighty on UA-cam, he shows you how to build sieve filters drum filters, his own biofiltration and even a protein skimmer in his website where you buy his plans. You can assure youself if you build a simple sieve filter in your system youd have perfect mechanical filtration. And just have to power wash off any algae that grows on the screen. Love your content

  • @Helveteshit
    @Helveteshit 4 роки тому +1

    A suggestion to avoid the solid build up, is like you said. Putting different grades of filter mesh on top of eachother. With a very fine first and coarser down the line. That way, those at teh bottom survive for longer than the top one. But, you can potentially wash/hose the top one, a lot more often. For example, use an old t-shirt or similar that doesn't seem too thickly woven for a fine filter capture.

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  4 роки тому

      I had a filter sock on there for a while but it clogged up very quickly. By the look of it these pads could probably do withe a clean off later today. 👍
      Am also getting some 100 micron screen to make a bit of a cone sieve to go over the top to see how that goes for us.

    Out of all the aquaponics videos on youtube, I have only seen one person using a super fine steel mesh(?) to remove solids.
    He had the water running down and you could see the solids slowly building up and the bottom of the curved filter.
    He removed the solids daily, I think, and added it to a compost cycle.
    Is the price of this type of filter too high, is that why nobody else uses it?

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  3 роки тому

      There are a fair few koi folks I've seen that build the DIY jobbies.
      I was using 1 &200 micron mesh & found that it clogged too quickly. Am sure a better filter could be made with it, I just don't have the space to play around with one in this system at the moment.
      Cheers Ninja 87.

    • @RobsAquaponics

      I found them just as fiddle as Bell siphons so didn't add any into the beds permanently. I did find that they drained the bed a bit slower than the bells but I think I could have fixed that if I played around with it enough. 👍
      Have used the socks in the past in an aquaculture build & found they worked well. Was looking for a fix I didn't have to clean everyday which is one issue I had with the socks.

    I did want to give you an update on the bell syphon. Well, I have a dozen random odd pieces of PVC pipe (trying to work out how to connect the drain to my setup). I wasn't too happy with the level left in the bed, so after searching Reece had a 65mm to 90mm coupling, expensive yes, but allowed me to get over the 1" bulkhead top nut. For some reason, it seems to turbocharge the bell,. But is working nicely. Got some plants in there atm trying to get some roots to grow to pop them into the NFT system.

      You could pump from the pond to the grow beds (via a solids filter if you wanted to add one) & have them drain back into the pond. Would be a good idea to make sure that there's more than enough water in the pond to not only fill the beds but also to have enough water to cover the pump in the pond & not stress the fish out.
      You would basically set it up like the "basic system," I run through in this clip,

      Hi Mel. I was sure I responded to this yesterday but I can't see the post now. 🤔
      I was having issues adding his URL's to the block list. Found out adsense doesn't like ad blockers so added them once I turned it off yesterday.
      He's another Click Funnel entrepreneur. The sales clip goes for 20min & you still have no idea what you're buying at the end of it.
      From what I gleaned from the clip & reading others posts I'm guessing that is selling a soil hydro system. In it he's using his own special soil mix & compost tea brew as bait. I suspect he may also be using IM/EM as well.
      He also misses that fact that most folks grow with aquaponics for the fish.😉
      Hope you folks are doing OK with all the wild weather down there.
