Great tutorial! I love that you used 5-4-1-4-1 as Chopin intended, this is hard to come by! Lots of other tutorials cheated in this matter.

Thanks and so glad you enjoyed it!

Is it considered cheating using the 3 finger? Is it that bad? I want to study this and I was thinking about using finger 3 but now I don't know

    • @diom00
      @diom00 5 місяців тому

@@fryderyckchopin484 not at all. There isn't any "cheating" when it comes to piano fingering, if it works for you and the result is the same. If you have smaller-than-average hand span like me then its perfectly fine, I played almost the entirety of the piece using the 3rd instead of 4th finger. Only disadvantage that you will probably encounter is that the 3-1 streches will be noticeably less confortable than 4-1.
Paul Barton himself, a great virtuoso has spoken about this issue from the specific piece - he also uses 3rd finger only.
      (ua-cam.com/video/H72jxFz7RWk/v-deo.html&)
I find it really encouraging that pianists like Barton and even some famous virtuosos (examples: Scriabin, Grieg, Godowsky, Ashkenazy, Barenboim, Hofmann amongst others) had smaller hands but this didn't stop them from becoming great.
Also this is another Barton's tutorial, this time from Beethoven's Sonata n.27, where he talks about a similar left-hand passage

I’ve recently started learning it, at age 76, and I found your advice very interesting. My teacher told me that left hand fourth finger can be my third, if more comfortable. But, based on your advice, I’m going to try the obviously awkward and difficult fourth for awhile.

    •  Рік тому

I think it‘s great to try it and see how it feels, however if you do experience any type of pain or discomfort / tension, then definitely go back to the 3rd finger. It isn‘t supposed to hurt, only strengthen your 4th finger. All the best with this study and thanks for watching!

I appreciate this tutorial. I watched the Paul Barton tutorial, but i felt this was actually more practical (and oddly enough, usint the 4th and 5th was more comfortable for me than having to do a really long 1st-3rd stetech to hit those d flats.)

I should add, seeing how you contorted your hand in the intro was also helpful.

Impressed by your 5 4 technique. Notice you do a little rotation and lifting moving around pivot 4, but doesn't look like a massive stretch for you. Haven't that flexibility between 5 and 4, so think I stick to 5 3, not sure. Downside is of course the 3 1 stretch to the c# in bar 1 fex. Could of course switch to 4 1, but dont like leaving the pivot. Think I can live with 5 3 1 3 1 3 🙂. Love this dramatic study, one of my favorites! Thanks a lot, Danae! 🙏

After half an hour practice of the 5-4 fingering I wanted to give up due to fatigue. It was the simple beautiful melody kept me going. I also got bogged down by the double Ab until a lightbulb moment - “Diminished 7 Chord” from bar 22 - 28; harmonic analysis did help. I guess the difficulties of this Etude were the spread of 13 chords throughout the piece.
Thank you very much for the excellent tutorial video!!

Great tutorial. I did try to start learning this but unfortunately I had a bad accident many years ago where i broke my back in a fall. My back does still ache when sitting at the piano for any length of time but what's worse was in the accident i damaged my ulnar nerve in left elbow which led to cubital tunnel syndrome which meant I couldn't feel the sensation in my pinky finger and half my index finger?? I had an ECG confirming the problem . I had an operation to release the pressure which wasn't guaranteed the sensation came back to a certain extent but I've lost strength in my little finger and it also shakes uncontrollably due to the nerve damage so attempting this is even more difficult than a fit person 😢
Also i am self taught and didn't start piano till 25 i have a lot of bad ingrained technique

Knowing how to break down difficulties is paramount in learning any music. Having not learned how to practice early on I find that, even at 70, your "tutorial" videos are extremely helpful to me, so THANK YOU! Speaking of left-hand studies, have you played Blumenfeld's beautiful Etude for the Left Hand (op. 36) or any of Godowsky's left-hand arrangements of Chopin Etudes (e.g.,. Op. 10 #6)?

    •  3 роки тому

Thank you so much, it makes me very happy to read that. I myself actually haven’t played the Blumenfeld or Godowsky, but of course I have heard them very often in class. They are very beautiful (and very challenging 😉)!

Anyone else notice that she has 1. An unusually long 5th finger and 2. An especially wide space between fingers 4 and 5 ? This would make this etude easier (although still difficult) for her than many others without those advantages. Caution should be used on some of the left hand exercises; holding widely stretched positions for long periods can create tension and tendonitis problems.

I am not a big fan of Chopin's études but op 10 nb 4. Maybe I'll try this one for a hour or so. I don't see why people play these in concert.
But hand placement is a big help (I struggled with the Campanella).

Thank you! Very helpful. I’m wondering what you think of Cortot’s fingering for the left hand: 531413...

    •  3 роки тому

For me personally, it makes more sense to use the 4th finger from the start. I find it more challenging to have to make the change in fingering so quickly and change my hand position in the middle of the figure, rather than having it set from the start. But having said that, I have a hand that is on the bigger side, so Cortot’s fingering might feel much better than mine for someone with a differently built hand.

Did Chopin intend the left hand fourth, or did the editor?

Hi Danae, my 5th finger doesn't reach the note fa if I put finger 4 on C...
In Cortot's edition he suggests always fingering 3, 4 and 3 in C...
What do you think of this typing?
I loved your channel, I already subscribed, thank you for such valuable content...

    •  2 роки тому +1

For my hand, the 4th finger feels fine, but if it isn’t possible or even painful, then I would definitely suggest switching to the 3rd finger on C. Have fun with this beautiful study and thanks for watching 🙏🏻

My lower part of the arm feels pain when practicing left hand...what should I do? Am I practice in the wrong way??

    •  2 роки тому

Make sure to find hand positions that don‘t cause any type of pain and discomfort while practicing the left hand slowly and then keep those positions when increasing the speed. Also, here is a video I made on arm pain, what to do when it arises and how to make it go away: ua-cam.com/video/4WJR_SLnPsk/v-deo.html

My 5th finger can't reach the bottom note when trying to do the first exercise. I need to longer fingers or more muscles😅

    •  2 роки тому

Alternatively, you can simply hold the 4th finger as long as possible and let go just when you need to before playing the 5th finger. Then repress the 4th finger. That way, you are training this stretch and in time, will probably be able to reach that bottom note.
