The sweetest thing about this song is that, after trying to impress her in the ways that should work for a prince - deeds of valour, such as slaying the dragon (ways in which he must have trained for years)- he goes outside his comfort zone, tries methods that he knows he isn't good at,. He's faltering, and unsure of how to convey his feelings, but he still tries. All he wants to say is that he loves her, in hope that she will finally hear what he wants to tell. (It's also interesting that, unlike some other films out there, her part of the duet isn't exactly about showing her affection in turn)
He's a showcase of a Prince who's more human than fantastical, trying to love a lady who's more fantastical than human. It's lovely but oh so bittersweet.
This movie is so amazing like it's all medieval and very reminiscent of the old animation that I love. I love the fact that he has feelings for her but despite his beautiful love song he sang for her she's still haunted by her past. She sings this to him and doesn't express her love. This is one of my favorite movies, it's so dark and mature but it's very beautiful and fantasy-like. I think this movie is super genius, it doesn't sugar coat anything and it isn't afraid to show it's dark undertones. This song makes me cry because it's so symbolic to both of them and even though he may not be the best singer, I think it perfectly represents him as a character.
Amelia Seyruun The unicorn is my choice, as a kid my least favorite part was when she was turned human because i had to wait till near the end of the movie to see the unicorn again
Yeah, well.. this also coming from a movie set in a medieval land, where a band of rogues are eating rat soup because they're poor, but somehow, there's also tacos. "Have a taco!" Peter S. Beagle is king of random. I met him and can confirm this. He apparently based the character the Butterfly on himself.
At the part where Amalthea starts to sing it's so touching. The two songs combined in one in a wonderful way and showing that they complement each other. Also it makes me shed a tear when she sees a unicorn in the other side of the lake, symbolizing how she is losing and forgetting her unicorn side and accepting her human side.
@@eleanorhogan8643 This song reminds me of how much I miss my friend Guy. And I can't help tearing up when I hear Prince Lir and Amalthea singing together. That really really touches me and I start crying my eyes out. Guy was really precious to me. 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Love saved Almathea from forgetting herself completely. Lir's love took her back to the ONLY place she was happy, home. It was there she seen who she really WAS and had finally remembered she is THE Unicorn.
This movie is just amazing, the songs, the story, the sadness of Amalthea losing the purity and innocence she had as a unicorn. This movie has always been one of my very favorites along with Spirited Away and it's just so touching
I haven't seen the film but the songs and music haunt me whenever I'm alone listening to it late at night The music may sound melancholy but at the same time it soothes my troubled soul. I don't know why but it does.
[Lir:] I've had time to write a book About the way you act and look But I haven't got a paragraph Words are always getting in my way Anyway, I love you That's all I have to tell you That's all I've got to say And now, I'd like to make a speech About the love that touches each But stumbling, I would make you laugh I feel as though my tongue were made of clay Anyway, I love you That's all I have to tell you I'm not a man of poetry Music isn't one with me It runs from me It runs from me [Duet] [Lir:] And I tried to write a symphony [Amalthea:] Once when I was searching [Lir:] But I lost the melody [Amalthea:] Somewhere out of reach [Lir:] Alas I only finished half [Amalthea:] Far away [Lir:] And finish I suppose I never may [Amalthea:] In a place I could not find [Lir:] Anyway, I love you [Amalthea:] Or heart obey [Lir:] That's all I have to tell you [Amalthea:] Now that I'm a woman [Lir:] That's all I've got to say [Amalthea:] Now I know the way [Lir:] That's all I've got to say [Amalthea:] Now I know the way [Together:] That's all I've got to say
This gets in my head sometimes from when I was a kid and I start singing it and it's like it's too goddamned tender of a melody or sentiment or something or whatever, just like, imagining Jeff Bridges and Mia Farrow in sound booths at separate times probably, and all the people who wanted to make this movie for kids, I don't know. It's too sweet to be real. I'm totally crying the good kind of tears. It's before my period. But. Just. Just, uh. Wanted to share with you all, that.
This scene where lady amalthea falls in love with the prince is literally the saddest scene in any animated film ever because the prince 100% believes that he is the good guy and he is saving this woman but the reality is she isnt crying because she is in love shes crying because she is losing the innocence of being a unicorn and the crushing weight of her new found mortality and humanity is making her so lonely the only way she can live is to succumb to the mortal love that she didn’t want in the first place. hes killing her and shes accepting as a form of self suicide and mourning her own death and the song is played out as a twisted take on fairytale romance and people sit on this movie like its not one of the most amazing stories of all time and did i mention it was animated in the early 80s and it still looks better than most animated films today
i agree she should be a unicorn, and that immortality isn't a bad thing, far from it, but i don't know, she did get changed for that time, and to be changed is to be changed, and i don't know if taking that on is suicide. maybe so, maybe no.
Initially, yes Lir seems to have had more selfish intentions. But his true nature was revealed when he helped her gain the spirit/courage to save her own kind and ultimately let her go at the end, making the absolute sacrifice. This is why I like Lir. He's very human.
What do you think of Lir' quote "unicorn mermaid sorceress vampire gargoyle werewolf elf...no name you would give her would surprise or frighten me i love whom i love"?
Jordan White One of my favorite animated movies since i was 4 for 30 years as i thought it has a good story, nice cast and i had a crush on Lady Amalthea as a kid and teenager, LOL as i thought she was on par with Taarna from Heavy Metal, Arwen from Lord of the Rings with Eowyn, Teegra from Fire and Ice, Leia from Star Wars, Red Sonja, Ariel, Jasmine, Callisto from Xena and other fantasy beauties. And you know what Lir meant by his quote of love? it's one of my most favorite quotes ever and i use it when i defend cross-species or rather inter-being romances in Sci-fi and fantasy stories/comics/animation/games/fanfiction/art etc. when i explain about love between two different beings like say Star Wars humans and aliens, Sonic and Sally (two sentient mammal beings), Denise and Frank on Regular Show (Margaret's parents), Cheetah and Batman on Justice League, Minerva Mink and a human lover in a fanfiction story series, Howard The Duck and Beverly Switzler in Marvel's Howard the duck comics,Tigra and Hank Prym, Lilandra and Xavier on X-Men TAS/comics (mutant and alien), Tankgirl and Booga, Vastra and Jenny on Doctor Who, Carly and Beast on X-Men, Hepzibah and Corsair on X-Men TAS/comics/Marvel, Star Trek humans and aliens, Alan and Madison in Splash. Ariel and Eric, Vinnie and Charlene from Biker Mice from Mars (a human woman and a humanoid sapient alien mouse man as two sapient mammal beings who are consenting adults) etc. And when i educate on what is beastality and what isn't as beastality only refers to an ordinary regular feral animal creature on 4 legs that isn't a sapient/sentient Being, a humanoid being, a magical creature Being, a mutant being or an alien being like say like scene on Clerks 2 if you remember with the Kinky Kelly guy who did that donkey for a show or if a guy would get it on with an ordinary regular unicorn, that is what TRUE beastality is as they are things that cannot consent with Beings or have body structures/parts like any human or any Being does nor they are humanoid. I mean Lir can't have her as an ordinary regular unicorn as that is a no no cause it's beastality but if she was transformed into an anthrofied humanoid sentient Unicorn being during her transformation back to a unicorn then it would be ok as Lir would still love her. I mean it's ok to romance a different BEING mind you like say an alien being, a magical creature being (ala elf or or mermaid gargoyle or vampire etc.), a sapient/sentient Being or alien being as it's ok as they can consent with other Beings as different races and inter-being romance can be an allegory in Sci-fi and fantasy stories as interracial allegories. I'm gonna write a fanfiction story alternate ending inspired by this nice drawing on DA: ralloonx.deviantart.com/art/Commission-Lonewolf69-3-401311564 In my story it's where after Lir says the quote i mentioned as Amalthea pleads Schmendrick not to change her into a unicorn as she loves Lir and Lir loves her then the Bull shows up and when Schmendrick is changing her back to a unicorn she gets emotional and her emotions during transformation is that it instead of turning her into a feral ordinary unicorn she turns into an anthro humanoid unicorn Being and has her dress still like here in this pic. Her powers becomes more advanced once she sees her human lover hit by the bull and new emotion even tears gives her stronger powers in her horn giving her telekinesis that can lift an elephant up but in this case the Red Bull to pick it up with the power like the strength of 4 elephants plus 2 far into the sea then go all Moses at the sea of the unicorns being free with her powers at work then the next morning. She not only revives him by using her horn to heal his wounds but also a passion kiss on the lips which has the power of true love which she has new human-like emotions and so on now that she is an sentient unicorn humanoid being, he wakes up and loves her still as he loves who he loves. They go to Hagsgate which is the town by Haggard's castle as they see Lir's real father as the townsfolk needs a king but Lir decides not to be king as he wants his real father be king and rule the town and country with good intentions instead of bad ones like Haggard and Lir to retire from royalty so he can live with Amalthea in her forest. Some people think the idea of a man marrying a unicorn being is absurd but he says to everyone that he has heard stories of humans marrying gargoyles, mermaids and creature beings and why not, so Amalthea and him get married and he crowns his real father as King then Lir has a wagon ready as they leave to her woods together then leave off there as there was a house that belong to a lonely old woodsman once before he died. Sentient Being Amalthea and Lir who are in an inter-being marriage relationship are finally together even have anthro unicorn children together as well. Sounds nice eh? it's to show you don't have to be the same Being to fall in love or marry and about giving up royal lifestyles to be with a person (rather Being as a person doesn't have to be human you know) you love and not all happy endings involve being with the royal person to live the castle or being the same Being. It's just i always cried and felt sorry for Lir as any man would be manly enough to feel his pain in his heart. I just want to make it all up with my story alternate ending.
Whoa you saw this in theaters? how old were you? i was born that year and saw this on video 31 years ago at age 4 and been one of my fave animated movies and fantasy films as it's one of the things that made me a Sci-fi/fantasy nerd since then and read the book in junior high.
I've only heard this by Scott Grimes and Leighton Meester before. It's so nice to finally hear the original. Thanks to Jimmy Webb for writing it and Jeff Bridges and Katie Irving for singing it.
The 'tree' with the twisted trunk is a wisteria that's been trained to tree form. Its also the plant that has the cascading blooms over the watee. They used to be popular in the victorian era. Nerdy bit of info, but they are SO pretty.
francis4diamonds wrote about Lir: "I'm not a man of poetry. Music isn't one with me," even though I'm singing... The next line of his song is, it runs from me, it runs from me! You could look at the meaning this way: the first “it runs from me” means that music escapes him, and the second “it runs from me” means it flows from him, so he has become able to sing because of his love for Amalthea.
my mom raised me with this movie. and as I got older I thought I could find the prince of my dream. and will live happy ever after. but I guess there is no such thing as a prince of my dreams. tired of getting hurt and finding and am lonely.
Anyone notice that her horn mark disappears by the end of the song? I’ve watched this movie probably forty times or more and didn’t notice until watching it again a few days ago.
She is my favorite 💗😍💓I have seen this money since I was little jaja love it soo much I just statt crying so much my god. Heartbreaking the end 💔😢 they should've let them be together
I think what helped the music and script in this movie so much is that the actual writer of the novel worked with the film-makers (and actually wrote the screenplay himself)
Total side note: can we all appreciate the late great Christopher Lee as King Haggard, like I personally believe it's an amazing performance, not my favorite thats a tie between him as Saruman and Count Duku.
it is cheesy, but i still love it after all these years. i still remember being that silly romantic lovesick chick stopping and starting this scene on my vcr so i can try to write down the lyrics!!!! gotta love youtube! now i can love it in secret again. :P
I had no idea, but I looked it up and apparently it's "or heart obey", which doesn't make sense but that's definitely what she says now that I listen to it...
j'adore j'adore j'adore if you like this film, watch french film "les parapluis de cherbourg" in english: the umbrellas of cherbourg. basically somewhat of the same concept - love that cannot happen due to other reasons - ends in the same manner as well. it has subtitles, so don't worry! but this is an amazing movie!
TFW you grow up watching this scene thinking it's a wonderful love confession and then you get the novel and wonder how it matches up and it turns out to be Prince Lir awkwardly singing Amalthea a bawdy song that he learned from old bodyguards about how love is inconstant.
does anyone know any other songs that are basically about knot knowing to tell someone they love them? in a sense of I can't express how wonderful you are, I know how I feel I just can't poot it into words.
I wanted to reply to QueenCloveroftheice's question below, but the new stupid comment system won't let me. Amalthea says "...in a place I could not find, or heart obey."
"That's All I've Got To Say" [Lir:] I've had time to write a book About the way you act and look But I haven't got a paragraph Words are always getting in my way Anyway, I love you That's all I have to tell you That's all I've got to say And now, I'd like to make a speech About the love that touches each But stumbling, I would make you laugh I feel as though my tongue were made of clay Anyway, I love you That's all I have to tell you I'm not a man of poetry Music isn't one with me It runs from me It runs from me [Duet] [Lir:] And I tried to write a symphony [Amalthea:] Once when I was searching [Lir:] But I lost the melody [Amalthea:] Somewhere out of reach [Lir:] Alas I only finished half [Amalthea:] Far away [Lir:] And finish I suppose I never may [Amalthea:] In a place I could not find [Lir:] Anyway, I love you [Amalthea:] Or heart obey [Lir:] That's all I have to tell you [Amalthea:] Now that I'm a woman [Lir:] That's all I've got to say [Amalthea:] Now I know the way [Lir:] That's all I've got to say [Amalthea:] Now I know the way [Together:] That's all I've got to say
@A9158162 Apparently. If you can call that singing. Still, it's such a pretty song, it's hard to fault him for trying to sing it. And that's NOT Mia Farrow singing, according to UA-camrs who are in the know(I'm just repeating what's been written on another page)!!!
Except that those aren't endings. They're simply tragic events. An ending with a touch of sadness to it can be much more powerful than a happy ending, if used correctly - in part because it reflects life more closely, but also because it is reassuring to know that even if some pain still remains, the good that exists because of that pain makes it endurable.
The sweetest thing about this song is that, after trying to impress her in the ways that should work for a prince - deeds of valour, such as slaying the dragon (ways in which he must have trained for years)- he goes outside his comfort zone, tries methods that he knows he isn't good at,.

About the way you act and look
But I haven't got a paragraph
Words are always getting in my way
Anyway, I love you
That's all I have to tell you

And now, I'd like to make a speech
About the love that touches each
But stumbling, I would make you laugh

No, that's Jeff's singing voice here. This is the only one he actually gets to sing.
we i am 30 this year and i remember this from my childhood.
The bit with the forest is beautiful.
IKR did you know this was all animated by HAND no computers and this artwas drew by everyone in the world
@@grim_rose443 I did, pretty impressive for 1982.
@Eleanor Hogan OMG you were apart of this animation crew?!?!?!
@@grim_rose443 I think they meant they knew the animation was hand-drawn
The 'tree' with the twisted trunk is a wisteria that's been trained to tree form. Its also the plant that has the cascading blooms over the watee. They used to be popular in the victorian era. Nerdy bit of info, but they are SO pretty.
When this was sung in "The Orville" I lost it. I really really lost it. I screamed and nearly cried.
Omg me too. I cried buckets. Because Gordan had to give up his unicorn...
The soundtrack to this movie was beautiful
JEFF BRIDGES IS THAT YOU
+STROBE light STUDIOS yes it is
Wow! I didn't know Jeff Bridges could sing like that!
❤ love this so much
Oh, and these scene still makes me tear up!
I've seen this grown up and loved my five yr old sis also loves it
Lir would've made a good husband.
most perfect scene ever :( EVER
ahhh.... :( so beautiful
So beautiful like Far Longer Than Forever!
francis4diamonds wrote about Lir:
"I'm not a man of poetry. Music isn't one with me," even though I'm singing... The next line of his song is, it runs from me, it runs from me! You could look at the meaning this way: the first “it runs from me”
means that music escapes him, and the second “it runs from me” means it flows from him, so he has become able to sing because of his love for Amalthea.
The Orville introduced me to this song
one of my all time fave songs ever
Such a beautifully written song by Jimmy Webb. No one writes like he does.
Someday I'll sing this to that girl
my mom raised me with this movie. and as I got older I thought I could find the prince of my dream. and will live happy ever after. but I guess there is no such thing as a prince of my dreams. tired of getting hurt and finding and am lonely.
Out of 7.4 billion people, there's bound to be someone out there for you.
I know you can find someone, keep your head up.
+Whats up? thank you but I don't think so I want more than the fairy tale
Haven't you learned something from the movie then? The Happy Ending can't happen in the middle of the story!
What about Beauty and the Beast?
Most beautiful love scene in any animation ever.
when Amalthea sings still give me goosebumps too this day.
watching this in 2015 because this song is beautiful.
And Lir was the first brony
LOL, this is one of my all time favourite movies....and I used to love watching this scene. Its so sweet....thanks for posting!
I love this movie so much! :D And the love between Amalthea and Lir makes me want love x.x I wish this stuff would happen in real life
i'm glad that their love didn't last. it just was not "right" becuase being a human she forgot that she used to be a unicorn.
yep
Anyone notice that her horn mark disappears by the end of the song? I’ve watched this movie probably forty times or more and didn’t notice until watching it again a few days ago.
Its heartmelting
i always cry in the end. :(
This is a beautifull Lovesong. I get goosebumps everytime i hear it.
This movie is in my top three animated movie favorites easily
She is my favorite 💗😍💓I have seen this money since I was little jaja love it soo much I just statt crying so much my god. Heartbreaking the end 💔😢 they should've let them be together
This is one of my favorite movie
Anyone else catch this song on the Orville.
rly?
gets me every time ... damn..... i thought i dont love her anymore
Jeff Bridges sang this *terribly*, flat as a pancake but with heart and soul, and I *cry* every time I listen to it..
It's beautiful. ✌
I love this song!!!!
it is so beautiful:(I have to cry all the time while listening to it...
it is cheesy, but i still love it after all these years. i still remember being that silly romantic lovesick chick stopping and starting this scene on my vcr so i can try to write down the lyrics!!!! gotta love youtube! now i can love it in secret again. :P
Who's here from The Orville?!
Kiffiny Jean YUP!! As soon as I heard it I was like “THE LAST UNIICORN!!“ I love that movie!
Me!
Me lol
Oh shit I haven’t caught up yet, please tell me Seth MacFarlane start an impromptu cover of “That’s All I Have to Tell You.”
Haha yes, reliving my childhood thanks to The Orville. Love all the meaning people have pulled out of this song. It was a great movie ❤️
It just comes to show that Romance is truly dead.
I had no idea, but I looked it up and apparently it's "or heart obey", which doesn't make sense but that's definitely what she says now that I listen to it...
❤
I love this song even though I know I won't ever feel this way about anyone.
Same here
here i am again a year later lol
I have decided that for my wedding in october im gonna include some lyrics from here in my vows
j'adore j'adore j'adore
if you like this film, watch french film "les parapluis de cherbourg" in english: the umbrellas of cherbourg. basically somewhat of the same concept - love that cannot happen due to other reasons - ends in the same manner as well. it has subtitles, so don't worry!
but this is an amazing movie!
Far Longer Than Forever
Wish my hair was that long.
Art Garfunkle on Scissors Cut did a sweet version of this... it's worth a listen, and you can get away with listening to it in regular company...
her singing is WAY better in this song than from now that i'm a woman. did a diffrent singer sing this song?
Ugh way a different singer did come in but I like mia's singing voice bc it's so full of emotion and it shows the unicorn's innocence
"Music isn't one with me" no fucking kidding
LackofEthics ha
Fuck you
LackofEthics
mean
LackofEthics 😂😂😂 I still love this song
TFW you grow up watching this scene thinking it's a wonderful love confession and then you get the novel and wonder how it matches up and it turns out to be Prince Lir awkwardly singing Amalthea a bawdy song that he learned from old bodyguards about how love is inconstant.
I just love the film ✌
The Orville did such a great job with this song
Yes ❤
lovely
Reminds me of The Legend of Zelda
The Orville brought me here.
I love the part where Lady Amalthea and Prince Lir kiss!
Jeff bridges ladies and gentlemen
The love story we all want...
Be careful what you wish for friend
:)
does anyone know any other songs that are basically about knot knowing to tell someone they love them? in a sense of I can't express how wonderful you are, I know how I feel I just can't poot it into words.
I wanted to reply to QueenCloveroftheice's question below, but the new stupid comment system won't let me. Amalthea says "...in a place I could not find, or heart obey."
"That's All I've Got To Say"
[Lir:] I've had time to write a book
About the way you act and look
But I haven't got a paragraph
Words are always getting in my way
Anyway, I love you
That's all I have to tell you
That's all I've got to say
And now, I'd like to make a speech
About the love that touches each
But stumbling, I would make you laugh
I feel as though my tongue were made of clay
Anyway, I love you
That's all I have to tell you
I'm not a man of poetry
Music isn't one with me
It runs from me
It runs from me
[Duet]
[Lir:] And I tried to write a symphony
[Amalthea:] Once when I was searching
[Lir:] But I lost the melody
[Amalthea:] Somewhere out of reach
[Lir:] Alas I only finished half
[Amalthea:] Far away
[Lir:] And finish I suppose I never may
[Amalthea:] In a place I could not find
[Lir:] Anyway, I love you
[Amalthea:] Or heart obey
[Lir:] That's all I have to tell you
[Amalthea:] Now that I'm a woman
[Lir:] That's all I've got to say
[Amalthea:] Now I know the way
[Lir:] That's all I've got to say
[Amalthea:] Now I know the way
[Together:] That's all I've got to say
@A9158162 Apparently. If you can call that singing. Still, it's such a pretty song, it's hard to fault him for trying to sing it. And that's NOT Mia Farrow singing, according to UA-camrs who are in the know(I'm just repeating what's been written on another page)!!!
cheesy films are sometimes the best
I LOVE this song. AND Jeff Bridges......somewhat amazing as a lyricist, though out there not going to lie....Lear is my
Except that those aren't endings. They're simply tragic events. An ending with a touch of sadness to it can be much more powerful than a happy ending, if used correctly - in part because it reflects life more closely, but also because it is reassuring to know that even if some pain still remains, the good that exists because of that pain makes it endurable.
i still can't believe that, that's the Dude singing!
