“She will remember your heart when men are fairy tales in books written by rabbits. Of all unicorns, she is the only one who knows what regret is - and love.....”
@Christian Aguiare Shmendrick meant that, in one hundred million years' time, when humans are extinct and are considered fairy tales, the unicorn will still remember Prince Lear and will still love him.
Peter Beagle (author of The Last Unicorn) refused to write a sequel to this for decades but he finally published a short story in a science fiction journal called Two Hearts in 2004. A girl named Sooz lives in a village that is plagued by a griffin. Sooz travels to see the king for his help, and meets Schmendrick and Molly on the way. She reaches the king's castle and finds Lir, who is old, forgetful and in no condition to fight a battle, but he accepts it because he never forgot his quest to someday find the unicorn / Amalthia again. Lir goes to battle with the griffin, and stabs him in his lion's heart. The griffin however has two hearts, a lion and an eagle, and his injured but not killed. Schmendrick calls upon the unicorn with magic, and the unicorn comes to slay the griffin in the eagle heart. Lir dies but is happily reunited with the unicorn before he dies, and she brings the dog who got in the middle of it back to life with her magic horn. She then disappears again, and Molly and Schmendrick bury King Lir. Then Molly teaches Sooz a song that she is only to sing when she turns seventeen and someone will once again appear... I was mostly interested in the unicorn and Lir getting back together, but they have another tragic end to their love.
I love the soundtrack in the movie. It may not be PERFECTLY sung, But their voices are so emotional and go so well with their characters. I love it, This is my favorite movie. I could watch it 100 times and still love it and want to watch it again
AGREED!! While I admit I love the 'more polished' version on the CD.....I LOVE this version in the film! The way the characters seem like REAL people............love it.
The Last Unicorn. It has been my favorite movie since I first watched it when I was around 3. Never failed to be my favorite. It’s so special, beautiful. It holds my hopes, my dreams, my tears, my despair, joy, and my heart. I don’t think there will be something like it ever again.
I just rediscovered this movie after years of not seeing it. It's a strange movie, no question, but things are so moving in it. This is one of them. I feel ridiculous, I'm a 40 year old woman and I am tearing up over this song and the setting. It's a beautiful story, very tragic as well.
same here.... I'm a 27-year old woman that listens to the heaviest of heavy metal, and the frontwoman of such a band...... and I'm freakin crying over this lovely song!! XD
Why do you feel ridiculous?? One doesn't stop feeling emotion in their lives until the moment they leave this Earth, unless they shut them down. And who would want to do that? :) This film brought me to tears....both happy, bittersweet, sad, hopeful from first watch at age 10...& always will. I'm 47 now & still smile at it.....and cry.
I was so surprised to hear this song on Orville last night! The Last Unicorn, where I first heard this song as a kid, was my first thought as soon as the song started. Brought back such fond memories of my favorite childhood movie, we had to watch it afterwards. Lol.
I’m sat here trying to figure out how I just watched the Orville tonight (on Hulu - it aired last night) and somehow your comment and the reply are saying 3y ago, not 3h ago… must be that time travel. 😂😂😂 *I had to look and find they started this weeks episode in 2019 opening the time capsule. Instead of Laura singing the song, Gordon is. And then gets sent back in time to Earth. And the song still makes me sad-happy regardless who sings it!
I just finished watching this episode and this is exactly why I am here too. This song must be etched into my brain somehow even though I haven't heard it since I was 5 years old watching The Last Unicorn every evening.
The Orville episode "Lasting Impressions" had this song in it sung by "Leighton Meester". This is what brought me here. Both versions are absolutely beautiful.
13 years old, but I love this movie soooooo much! I wish more of the people around me knew this movie and wouldn't laugh at the title before watching it :/
in 1986 I was 6 years old. I took the VHS to school and made my teacher put it on for the whole class. people werent as in love with it as I was. sometimes its nice to keep things a secret and share it with those who truly can see its beauty
I love this movie, and this song is my favorite part. The unicorn has an amazing voice, and the Prince does as well. I love how the Prince says "...I've the time to write a book about the way you act and look, I haven't got a paragraph. Words are always getting in my way, anyway, I love you..." It shows how he really feels and at the same time, he wants the unicorn to stay with him, but also wants her to find her way back to her own place.
this movie was amazing for its time. The acting was grand, the music sublime, and although date now....the animation is lovely. I'm 24, and this is easily one of my favorite movies ever.
I think even though they show the clip from the film here, the song sounds like a different woman singing it....the woman from the soundtrack (forgot her name now). Mia's voice in the film is more off-key, but sounds much more emotional. Both versions are beautiful.
@@MarcusTalbert well he was blessed/cursed by a unicorns love so he was loved by all his subjects but he could never love again. That's more how the book puts it. He also succeeded in everything he did but he always missed her. Double edged blessing.
@@MarcusTalbert also ffs schmendrick is almost a thousand years old in this film. That's why his delivery lacks emotion. He's seen it ALL. in the book he was the strongest wizard ever born and sent to study under the greatest wizard of the time but he couldn't even teach him to control his powers so he cursed schmendrick that he'd be eternally young untill he mastered his powers at wich point he'd age again. Also his master was able to turn a unicorn into a man but not back. When schmendrick changed her back he was freed of the curse and could feel it leaving him. That's why he acts so out of it. That's straight out of the book. Its also why he hooks up with Molly. She's old by most standards but not his at ALL.
