A song from one of the greatest stories ever told. I saw this when I was 5 years old for the first time and 35 years later I still am just as obsessed with it. I
This is probably my favorite song in the entire movie, makes you wonder where the innocence in the world has gone, which may be a metaphor for "Where did the Unicorns go?"
Some seem confused by the "narwhals lost at sea" line, but I think it's both a reference to the fact that people would sometimes find, or buy, the horn from a narwhal and think it was the horn of a unicorn, and also that the unicorns in the movie are lost in the sea.
It’s part of the legend of the Unicorn. Unicorns and narwhals are inextricably linked. Beautifully painting in my grandma’s bedroom of white unicorns rising out the sea just like at the end of the movie. It’s beautiful. Wish I knew what it was called to tell you. I think it has Neptune in the painting too.
The most magical movie and book to ever exist 😻 I have watched this over 200 times, and I cannot get enough of it. The casting, the music, the animation, the dialogue, the sound, everything is utterly perfect. Thank you thank you Peter Beagle for this magnificence.
I never knew this as a kid, but Lir is voiced by Jeff Bridges. The only voice from the movie I really remembered as a kid was Christopher Lee as Hagrid.
"She just looked at me, and then I felt sorry that I killed the thing. Sorry, for killing a dragon!" That's not the exact line, but yeah, I think Lir gets it... eventually. After having it spelled out for him. But let's give the poor lovestruck boy a break.
I agree with her. It is a bit harsh to kill a dragon if it was just minding its own business and not hurting anybody. If it was attacking a village yes but not if he was just sitting there minding his own business.
I love this movie...it is sort of the reverse of beauty and the beast....where a mythical beast turns into a beauty. Even though this movie was released in the early 1980s..it has all of the artistic flavor and style of the 1970s. Also, that dragon was not harming anyone...leave it alone. Ps...never trust anyone who says, "trust me."
Goodness Haggard is hard to please, Smendrick is doing a fantastic trick, he manages to make a whole deck of cards dissappear, his coat dance and does a somersault while keeping the juggling balls in the air and appears from behind the throne.
LYRICS: In the sea, the fish have learned to fly On a moonlit night, on wings of silver As the enchanted stars, sail serenely by Do they know... where do unicorns go Where winged horses fly Narwhales lost at sea ....and never seen again Go, go and ask the magpie Where do unicorns go In the trees, the birds have learned to speak Gaily colored, they keep their secrets In a parade of clouds, playing hide and seek Do they know... where do unicorns go Where winged horses fly Narwhales lost at sea... and never seen again Does myth and mystery lie Where the unicorns go...
Even though that was a crow sitting on the battlements and not a magpie, I believe that they put a crow there deliberately because it is Mommy Fortuna's crow as it escaped from the harpy.
@chompachangas Well, slaying another immortal as herself, is like slaying her brother or something. Would you really be grateful of someone doing that? I sure wouldn't.
It is clever that Lir looked like he was riding on a unicorn, it was a bit harsh that he killed an innocent dragon, if it was attacking a village and killing people and livestock then yes but not if it was sitting outside it's cave minding his own dragony business.
In the books, Lir has accomplished nothing in life. He has been a disappointment. The presence of Amalthea inspires him to live up to the ideals of men and knights at the time, which include writing poetry and killing beasts. He is doing what is expected of a hero. Eventually Amalthea realizes that he is trying to serve her rather than possess her and she falls for him.
@@cs-zr9xy Actually he is not Haggard's biological son if you remember in the book, he, Smendrick and Molly go through the ruins of Hagsgate and they meet Lir's real father and it turns out that he is not only Lir's real father but also the rightful king of Haggard but Haggard overthrew him and he left Lir on the doorstep hopìng he would be safe.
I absolutely love that dragon and felt terrible for its death. Always thought it was interesting how they used an Asian dragon when the world of Last Unicorn is obviously medieval Europe. Maybe they just told the Japanese animators “draw a dragon” and nothing else.
alexp9999 if you think she was pissed about Lir's offering, how about when she had her back against the sea with the Red Bull in front of her at the end and saw Lir's lifeless body? to me THAT'S PISSED!!
I used to watch this movie so much -the VHS- version soo much that I ruined the tape from watching it so consistently. Yeah I know I can not spell. STOP JUDGING ME!

Every song in this movie makes me want to weep. Not every film that can do that, even to one person
Magic
Saaaaame!
Yes me too Roxanne beautiful song by america love it forever.
Yesss@@ same here! Every time i feel goosebumps! I cant handle how romantic prince Lir is!
I love this movie so much. you don't get movies like this anymore that capture that special magic. I was so happy when it came out on dvd.
I love that cat, and I love his line as well, "No cat, anywhere ever, gave anyone a straight answer". So true haha!
“No cat out of his first fur was ever deceived by appearances, unlike humans, who seem to enjoy it...” 😹😻
This is probably my favorite song in the entire movie, makes you wonder where the innocence in the world has gone, which may be a metaphor for "Where did the Unicorns go?"
Very well stated, my thoughts exactly.
Wow thats a very good point
yep thats why i love this so so much.
This may be Off topic..
But when fighting the dragon. Did anyone else hear that Godzilla roar??
Do you know I never thought of that. That is a very good point.
"Molly, who am I? Why am I here? I-I knew, a moment ago... But I have forgotten."
"The unicorns. If you are not the last."

You are correct, I believe that too.

Maybe flowers are a bit more romantic than the head of a dead animal.
Interning how it’s a Chinese Dragon instead of a European Dragon.
@@sirorliktheironclad That is true, but to be fair a lot of Japanese animators worked on this film.

this soundtrack is gold.

That crow must have been Mommy Fortuna's.
That makes... sense

Common lady he went all the way to Japan to kill Godzilla, give him a little credit.
Funny you say that since they used Godzilla's roar for the Dragon.
In the newer version, Rankin Brass took Godzilla’s roar off on behalf of Toho

This is my favorite movie ever.
The crow in this bit is Mommy Fortuna's as it flew away from the harpy and escaped, it appears at the end too.

being a woman.. and respecting all life, perhaps thru the prospect of giving it myself, am appalled by slaying needlessly as well..
