    Your overall safety gear is fine, but for that one in a million chance of total explosive failure, wear some sort of neck guard, preferably like what Lacrosse goalie/hockey people wear but I guess normal Kevlar would be fine as well.

    • @ALegitimateYoutuber
      @ALegitimateYoutuber 8 років тому +29

      Ya the neck is an area people away over look for some reason. And i don't know why, since that is a vital area and one that can be more easily then most.

    • @sergeantbigmac
      @sergeantbigmac 8 років тому

      Ya no kidding. Just about every vital function of your body passes through your neck, and it doesnt have a skull to protect the important bits ;) One shell fragment from a failure is all it would take to slice a jugular.

    • @L3uX
      @L3uX 8 років тому +1

      *****
      Idk about experience at oversee, and it would always suck to wear any sort of ballistic turtle neck guard as it's hot as hell, but personally, I've seen lots of smaller to pretty serious injuries from unprotected necks. From borderline crushed trachea to almost a severed neck/jugular. Shit happens just out of nowhere or the least time you expect it and it's scary how vulnerable the neck area is.

    • @ALegitimateYoutuber
      @ALegitimateYoutuber 8 років тому +1

      MikSIK.
      Neck protection isn't hard to made, but making it in a way that doesn't make you hate it can be tricky. Since for example having the material too flexible is bad, yet improves comfort. You want it high collar, but doing so can reduce comfort and restrict head movement. Plus other shit like how close it's to the neck and the angle it's made at, also are concerns. All those things plus more, as you can imagine are a pain in the ass to do for shit that has to be one size fits all or is limited to a few sizes. It's only of those things that can be done but is annoying to get done, well get done right and cheaply.

    I suspect that under normal conditions, the Wolf ammo lacquer wouldn't be melting and gumming up the works. Let the action cool down every 600 ( ! ) rounds or so, and I don't think you'll have that issue. Of course, it would then not be a meltdown.

    8:39 So I went to go read about the lacquer primer sealants (still learning about guns) and I found out that it's supposed to be a military thing because the sealant is meant to keep the primer sealed from water or mud getting in to cause a dud during combat (or just traversing through mud). Also, they don't really use sealant for civilian sold ammo because they just use it for sport shooting anyways, but apparently they could make a mess all over the front of the bolt like in the video.

    How about running an AK74 build set to Russian military rifle spec for your second test? As the barrel will be thinner, it will be interesting to see when this one fails. I know these tests are entertainment, but Im actually curious how a Soviet mil spec gun will run, not a gun with a thicker machine gun barrel. An AK will probably run 80K rounds until receiver failure if we mount a water jacket on it like Vickers machine guns used to have.

    • @wysoft

      As an example Arsenal Bulgaria lists the typical lifespan of their 16" barreled 5.56 and 7.62x39 rifles as 15,000 rounds of mixed semi and auto fire. Even with an obscene amount of cooling, they're just not going to last that long.

    • @LifeStyle-uh1ns
      @LifeStyle-uh1ns 8 років тому

      There is a really cool thread on AR15.com I reccomend you check out. Basically the owner of Battlefield Vegas lists his experiences of his rental guns out there, how long they last, breakage etc. There are seperate threads for AR's AK's and others. He lists that stamped AK receivers last about 80K rounds then start cracking. AR15 receivers last forever. Regarding barrel life he pretty much quotes 25 yard full auto fire so rifle range accuracy is not important here. They check if headspace is safe and carry on. Pretty much applies to this type of test where accuracy doesn't matter as long as the machine keeps running.

    Love your meltdown videos! You're the one who convinced me to buy my Vepr 7.62x39 after I saw that meltdown video. Looking forward to Part II with the AK-74! It will be interesting to see how many more rounds the original AK-74 takes plus the "new" one you promise to test with non-laquered ammo!

    And this is why I bought a Vepr in x39. Of course it's not full auto but same rifle otherwise. Even had the rails, carrier and trigger polished up nicely making it smooth as butter.

      Technically, this "AK 74" with a RPK receiver + Heavy barrel stopped before the M4 carbine with a lightweight stainless steel barrel did.
      Both around 800 - 900 rounds. Same with the 7.62x39 VEPR

    • @BigChiefWiggles
      @BigChiefWiggles 8 років тому +4

      Umm, the M4 EXPLODED, the AK had its firing pin jammed by melting lacquer because the chamber got so hot the lacquer melted off when the rounds were being chambered, I think there is a difference there.

      @BigChiefWiggles 8 років тому

      Maybe, the cold hammer forged barrels are stronger than just about anything you get on an AR, Im not sure what the AR equivalent would be or if it even exits but it does come standard on the Russian AKs, both Saiga and Vepr.

  • @costsme22
    @costsme22 8 років тому +6

    can you put regular ak handguards on these?

    • @PSG1JOHN1
      @PSG1JOHN1 8 років тому

      Only after you cut off some of the wood or plastic AK 47 hand guards.
      The Vepr have thicker barrels and the arch half circle on the inside of the standard AK top hand guard is too fat to fit it on a vepr.
      You would need to Dremel those support arch down a little on the top cover hand-guard
      You would need to buy AK 47 gas tube because Vepr gas tube does not have top cover holds.
      Then you need to buy a Hand-guard retainer for the lower hand-guard to keep the lower in place.
      That why most people like Saiga AK and parts kits because they use standard AK parts.
      Vepr are heavy duty AK with everything made stronger and thicker so you would need to mod and buy adapter to use AK furniture because of the thicker barrel.

    • @n3on170
      @n3on170 8 років тому

      Logic...

    • @ShirudoSystems
      @ShirudoSystems 8 років тому

      You can. You need to replace the gas tube with a standard AK gas tube that has upper handguard retainers. As far as the lower handguard you can either buy a bolt on handguard retainer or you can remove the front sight post and gas block, add a handguard retainer (maybe an RPK one to fit the heavy barrel?), then press the gas block and front sight post back on. You can use a standard AK stock as well by adding a slant receiver adapter and a longer pistol grip screw.

  • @Mongo63a
    @Mongo63a 8 років тому

    Muzzle rifling erosion is due to the barrel being cleaned from the muzzle end numerous times. If the barrel is cleaned from the rear then the cleaning rod does not usually effect the muzzle bore greatly. This is why you need to use bore guides on guns that that you have to clean from the muzzle. i have a Stoner 63A commando barrel that no longer has any rifling in it but it wore form the chamber throat to the muzzle with the muzzle having the last bit of rifling before the bullets all started tumbling. Another area of wear is gas port size, this is why many barrel have to be replaced when the gas port gets too large and the cyclic rate increases enough to cause malfunctions.
