- This video is in the Re-Engineering the Chess Classics series! To celebrate the publication of my new book (written together with my childhood coach Steve Giddins) I am examining a series of classic games - just as we did in the book - using the creative engine analysis techniques I described in "The Silicon Road to Chess Improvement" At the same time, I get to indulge my current obsessions for a couple of classic players ;) and this time the lucky "victim" is the great Swedish player Gideon Stahlberg. I've been inspired by the wonderful book "Gideon Stahlberg An Epoch in Swedish Chess - Volume 1 The Musketeer Years 1908-1939" by Peter Holmgren (Verendel Publishing) which has led me along all sorts of wonderful paths related to the Swedish chess scene of that era. We start - maybe strangely - with a loss of Stahlberg's! Rudolf Spielmann was a frequent guest to Sweden and played many matches with the top Swedish players Stahlberg, Stoltz and Lundin. Stahlberg won his 1933 match against Spielmann but I really loved Spielmann's sole victory in the match, demonstrating some pretty nifty use of both rook's pawns!
I’m grandmaster Matthew Sadler, a 2-times British Champion, and ranked in the world’s top 50 for many years. I’m also a prolific author. My latest book "Re-Engineering the Chess Classics" appeared in May 2023. It uses the techniques described in "The Silicon Road to Chess Improvement" to analyse afresh thirty-five of the most fascinating and complex chess games ever played by World Champions and other top grandmasters.

Thanks Mathew just thanks :)
😊😊😊
Love learning about the masters from the past!
Ah great! Glad you're enjoying these series! 😊
Much appreciated Matthew. I always admire the clarity with which you describe the ideas behind the moves. Also the historical, biographical notes that accompany your videos.
Ah thanks! Glad you enjoy that! I really do love the games and the players of that era! Nice when you find other people who do too! 😊
Re Reading your book right now!)
Yeah! 😊
Thanks Matthew, great video, great game ! Spielmann final years (1939-42) where indeed spent in Sweden, his death there is one of the saddest stories in the history of chess
Regarding the move 4… Bg4, I understand why you speak of a “mania” for this move, having watched your previous videos 😊 However in this particular position, the move is inaccurate but by no means illogical: it is, after all, a QGD Exchange reversed
Yes indeed you're right! It's a perfectly logical move here (although a touch early in this specific position)
That line over 4:37 gives me Deja Vu, isn't that a topical line among contemporary master games?
There have been a few games indeed though mostly in blitz I think?
@@DanielGomes-sw2fd this reminds me of a line in the London with an early cxd4 where black does the same sacrifice of the pawn and the king also steps aside 1.Nf3 d5 2.d4 Nf6 3.Bf4 c5 4.e3 Nc6 5.Nbd2 cxd4 6.exd4 Bf5 7.c3 e6 8.Qb3 Bd6 9.Qxb7 Bxf4 10.Qxc6+ Kf8
2:08 i think you meant an exchange caro
Ah oops yes that's what I meant!
